Rebadged Castrol?
Hi guys,
I was looking at the oil conversations and I could only manage half of what everyone is saying. Im not so good with acronyms
But what I kinda gathered and from what a friend of mine who used to own an RX7 says that the Mazda Rotary Oil (MRO?) (thats selling for a highway robbery price in Sydney for $89) is pretty much Castrol GTX3 or something. (As long as its mineral)
I was wondering what you guru's here know about it? Im in the market for a new RX8 and Id like to know what Im getting myself into before I buy one so there no sneaky surprises

MRO is not GTX3 rebadged. Castrol blend the oil for MAzda in Australia to Mazda specifications. it is the oil ot hve been tested by Mada on the engine for long term use. Having destroyed my last RX7 motor with Mobil 1, I use MRO exclusivley. It costs a bit more but if there is a problem iwth the engine I can still challenge Mazda to help with the repair as I have been using their recommended product. Not sure I can do this if I use other oils.

really? thats where I was planning on getting my new RX8. I saw it selling at a car accessory shop for $89. But if its $55 bucks at westend, I'll deffinately buy everything I need from there.
I just need to make sure I have about 5 bottles of 5L MRO because Im moving near Canberra in a few weeks.
Thanks matt13b

Hey Leonil, how 'near Canberra' exactly? The RX8 owners are pretty social bunch here and you would be welcome.
Oh, and to keep on topic, I also only use MRO in my 8.
cheers

Cripes, I didn't think it could get worse than living in Canberra but you've nailed it Tim.

I'm with SymSym here...........I have used MRO because it is the Mazda recommended oil and has always been put in by the Mazda Service guys of course whenever serviced. I will keep using it when I am out of warranty in October for the same reasons SymSym puts forward. Expensive? Yes, but I get peace of mind............
Cheers

This is the back of a bottle of MRO. I think it spells out the manufacturers thoughts on oils quite well. If they spend 40 years developing rotaries, I think we should try to follow their recommendations.
