regarding to bad fuel consumption.

Hello.

I am just wondering..

which actually manages fuel consumption??

in my case..

With full tank with shell v-power

i could travel about 350km

maybe little bit more.

which was about 14L/100km
This was usual. ( I've been driving over year now! and fuel consumption was pretty stable. )

Sometime i noticed change in fuel consumption.

with full tank of v-power, i could only travel 300km. Which was about 18L/100km ( odd )

I could feel bit odd with this measure and tried again.

With another go with full tank of petrol, my fuel consumption was about 19L/100km. Maybe close to 20!! ( odd )

what could be wrong?? It's giving me financial disaster~@_@

Thanks for the answers in advance.

It was running fine with 14,15L/100km over year!

Thanks for the answers in advance.
Financial disaster? Sounds like you need a second job for that car man!

Either that or stop fanging the crap out of it.

Ahh- you got me wrong. I'm not crying about it's usual fuel consumption.

I'm just worrying about it's abnormal fuel consumption!

Which is like 19L/100km althought i'm only reving about 4~5 and shifting gears.

Yea i guess so :p

well mods you can see under my post.

simply suspensions intake exaust header flywheel. etc..

after mods fuel consumption was still about 14L/100km ( perhaps little lower like 13L/100km )

But i'm suffering from unusual fuel consumption. ( 19+L /100km )

That's not unusual.

Oh.. It's not??

It was bit odd to me.

Because usually ( with my driving habit ) my fuel consumption was about 14L/100km. ( it was quite consistant and reliable measure for me...as i've been driving 8 for about year and half )

I was just wondering how come I'm using same amount of petrol with same habit and traveling about 40~50km less in total.

Thanks Cromax

Does sound unusual to be sure. So could be one or more of several things (or others I'm missing) but, CAT going bad, plugs need replacing, air filter needs replacing, MAF dirty causing rich mixture, engine dying. Might check the easy ones and if nothing, have the dealer do a good check. Good luck!

An extra 3 - 5 litres per tank is a financial disaster???? You get less fuel in a tank in the summer vs the colder months....it could be a faulty CAT...it could be number of things. Generally, you should still get around 400 - 420km per tank (if you don't flog it).

Mazda may be able to check it out, but with the amount of mods on your car they might not be too helpful.

It really depends on what sort of driving you are talking about...highway or city driving?

It's more like city 40% highway 60%

also, i always try to avoid rush hours.

and come on. financial disaster was more like j/k. ( and it's not extra 3-5 litres per tank.. extra that much per 100km. so about extra 17litre per tank.

but it sure is annoying. I have to go petrol station little more frequently.

Unless i am being a complete **** i can drive normally in regular traffic with a redline or two once a day and bust out at least 420km.

I've run out of petrol twice on the road trying to beat that figure.

But yeah. If you're just ticking over 300 then i think that is not right.

Try an oil change?

I am using V-Power.

Yeah, I get 400-450, usually to the top end of that actually. But punching the accelerator a lot finds around 300.

1. Sorry, but hairy figures about how many k's per tank is no way to measure what your fuel consumption is. There's a much better way which will give you real data to determine whether something is wrong.

2. If you modify both the induction and exhaust sides of your engine, and you have no way of retuning the car for the changes, fuel consumption changes should not be unexpected.

3. It's a rotary -- it likes a drink. Anyone who bought the car and doesn't know that should read more....and either walk more or earn more money.

4. Fuel consumption can be adjusted through judicious application of the right foot. However, the RX-8 is too much fun for anyone to concentrate on that for more than 10 minutes, so unless there is a tuning problem, enjoy what you have!

My mileage was dropping. I recently had a CEL for code P0037.
I changed out coils, plugs and the rear O2 sensor. CEL is gone.
Mileage seems to have picked up but it's too early to be sure.
Oh, get yourself a Scan Gauge II
Will update soon.

I think a few here need to re-read what he is saying. He is aware that economy is not good on the 8. He is aware he has made changes that will affect economy. He is talking averages over time with similar driving habbits. Personally I follow a similar process to keep an eye on issues on both the 8 and the 7.

He has stated that after all his mods he was averaging 14L/100km. katana, I think the suggestions here to check your coils, plugs, air filter, maf and throttle body are the best advice. You can see a number of threads lately about the issues surrounding these items.

Cheers

Andrew

He's not complaining about any performance decrease though ... which would suggest it's most likely his driving style.

gotta disagree. My driving style didnt change but I went from 350k/tank to 300. Looks like it was my Maf/Air Filter/Coils and possible plugs.

This may sound a bit silly but are you using air con or driving with windows open a lot more now that the weather's warmer? Checked tyre pressures? Carrying any extra weight in the boot?

I agree.

When a rotary starts to chew more fuel, its a sign the plugs are at the end of their life. However, in the case of the RX-8, you have to check the coils aswell.

Mazda have always used dodgy suppliers for their spark plug leads so get a new aftermarket set for yourself.
