Macca - surely you underestimate me with your comment "could check with Rod and see what his are[if he knows....]" Actually you don't underestimate cause I am clueless. I am not really sure what I have. I actually thought I had the hard compound but Taka indicated at Winton that they are medium, same as his. On the side wall they have R1 and SR. I would have to go back and do some research to check. Having said that I have been told the soft are way too soft. I am guesing I will get at least six hard track days (maybe more) on my tyres and I guess I do give them a very hard time. Quickest lap is always the first and then they go off a bit before reaching consistency. I have also heard that the new Dunlop D3 is a superior tyre to the D2 (mine). I would stick with Dunlop (pardon the pun) but that is just me. Mind you, when someone goes quicker - here come the Hoosiers - they are cheap and very fast.

Just while we are on Semi-slicks. I have the RE55S(not sure of compound) and have driven on them twice from Sydney to Wakefield. Is that ok or really bad for them? I assumed they wouldnt get much temperature in them from the long straight highway driving and hence not much wear. It just seems easier to chage them at home rather than take 2 sets of rims..

Heat cycle does not apply much to Bridgestone - that is what I have been saying. Your Bridgestone is 99.99% SR compound. The others are much much softer compound that cannot hold temperature more than 3 laps - aiming for single lap time attack ...

Rod, our R1 is fine for wear. The problem is with the "medium" (they are actually closer to hard - or you can say they are medium-hard), is that they will start losing grip around 10ish-th lap. That is what the well known subaru racer told me. So he said, time attack he will use Dunlop "R1" compound. For race, he will be bridgestone.

Rod, I am not as good as you feeling the car and I do need time to adjust to the grip of the Dunlop. Heard the D03J feel is pretty much the same (just a bit more grip in all aspects). I am keen to say on the Dunlop. Otherwise I had to adjust what I have to do in corners and adjust my line at Winton.

I like the enkei GTC01's.

I have seen them in the flesh and they look very good!

Was seriously considering a set for the mini.

As far as track tyres go have you looked at the Kumho V710. A friend who holds the lap record of the wrx club at both Sandown and phillip island swears by them. He spent an entire day testing most R spec tyres and ended choosing the V710 over the others... But hey tastes are very subjective.

V710's aren't road legal in Australia.Makes it a pain if you can't drive to close tracks,or to get fuel,or go out to the motel or to get lunch.....
Otherwise,good tyre.

They're definitely a front runner. I like the BBS's but it's hard to justify the extra spend over the Enkei's when they also look and perform really well.

As to track tyres, thanks for the recommendation but as Len says, although I don't intend to run them on the road, it'd be nice to have the option for short trips and stay road legal...

I always thought that the reason we all used semi-slicks was so we could drive to the track with them. If we all fit them at the track, then why is it we are not using full-slicks for track only? Wouldn't that be better/faster or am I missing something?

Cost and durability mainly Matt.Plus if you need to pop in to town for fuel etc.....
Although the slicks would be quicker,you really need a good set-up[ie very stiff] to get the most out of them.
Semis are the best cost/performance compromise,and at the end of the day,it's not Bathurst....just a bit of fun.

Well I am thinking of trying the Kumho Ecsta XS (KU36) to save the need for a while for 2 sets of wheels and tyres (time needed for intense negotiation... Maybe possible bribe). Under testing for a 4-5 lap dash they seem to be giving times just a fraction off R-spec tyres but still retaining very good road manners and decent wet grip. More than 5 hard laps at a time and they do lose grip.

For me at less than $200 a tyre (225/45 17 (although it has a tread width of 235mm mounted on 7.5 inch rims) and being told I should at least get 14000km to 15000km with a few trackdays thrown in out of a set they look really good value!

As Danielle does not really want a 2nd set of wheels with tyres hanging around the house (like in the MX5 days) this seems like a possible way to try!

... And with the stupid price people are offering for pretty much new Mini JCW challenge wheels with the runflats I can buy new wheels (lighter and .5inch wider) the Kumho XS tyres, bigger rear swaybar and a set track pads for all 4 corners! and this for Danielle

Only issue is for a 17 x 7.5 wheel that has a 4x100 stud pattern and fits over the JCW's brakes I have only 1 real choice the 5zigen GN+. No GTC01 wide enough fits but luckily the GN+ should look good on the mini!

At the last MRT Track Day at Wakefield Kumho bolted a set of KU36's on a new Evo Lancer.
They weren't even scrubbed in and were doing good times,and showing nice wear characteristics.

Somewhere between +30 and +35 looks the best, but +38 is the legal limit.

Just about every state implements the national rules in this area. The +38 (or more correctly 'No more that 25mm change in track') rule is one of the national rules.

Ok, time to revive this thread.

Have picked up some used Dunlop semi-slicks which will do me for a few track days and some standard RX8 rims.

Plan is this:

Fit the semis to my current 18x8.5 Enkei rims and replace the semis when necessary. Those Enkei's will become my track rims from now on.

Buy some new street rubber (current street rubber has had it) and either fit that to the standard RX8 rims or buy some new rims in 18x8 or 18x8.5 (I've given up on the 19 inch idea - too hard).

So, I'm shopping for some new Michelin PS2's in 235/40/18 in the short term and some new street rims in the longer term - I think I'll go for the Enkei gtc01's.

Can anyone recommend a decent tyre shop in Sydney? I've asked Australia's Best Tyres to quote me because that's where I bought the current Enkei's and Michelins but I'm happy to go elsewhere...

Does anyone think I can get the new Enkei's cheaper O/S? If so, where?

I'm thinking 35 offset for the new rims - anyone think that's a problem or suggest a different offset? If so, why?

Well, not that anyone seems to care...sniff, lol, but I've found again that selling tyres is a black art if the price range is anything to go by.

Got quoted $800 per corner for a new set of Michelin PS2's ( ), so decided to see what else was out there in 235/40/18:

Falken 452 - $260 ea

Pirelli P0 Rosso - $440 ea

GT Radial - $295 ea

As I'll be using semi's for the track and only cruising on the street, I'm starting to think the Falken's might be the go and save my cash for good semi's...

Thoughts? Care factor?
