Thanks for the welcome, Gomez and Hymee.
Can anyone (perhaps East Moon?) tell me what is happening with the map of Australian RX8 owners? After a couple of weeks of watching, I've reached three conclusions:
1 nothing is happening
2 East Moon intends it to be restricted to 2003 owners
3 East Moon doesn't like anyone else messing with it.
If I haven't got this right, will someone please let me know? I'd also like to know if there is a reason why someone shouldn't start a new map to include all current Australian owners.
Ron
PS Will someone also explain what a "sticky" is, and how it is created?

Jellybean,
A "sticky" is what a moderator can do to a thread to keep it at the beginning of a list. It gives it prominence, and helps people find it. People can request me to make things sticky.
I'm thinking of un-sticking this thread if it doesn't get updated. East moon seemed to get pissed off when taka touched it. I should do one, after all I work with digital mapping systems .
How about you pm East Moon and see if he is planning an update?
(It is often also found after the results of a stiffy, but L&L will need to explain.)
Cheers,
Hymee.

"sticky" is created in a thread by Hymee.... I don't want to tell you how he does it
hehe
We can do what we want in the Australian Forum are we.
I am thinking a better map since Australia is so large and most of the name is on the east coast - there must be a way to make it look easier to read.

I've PMed East Moon to try to clarify his position with respect to the Australian Owners Map. It seems to me that it would be of considerable interest to some of us to have an easy method of locating other club members and I'm prepared to support (with hours and effort) any attempt to create and maintain another map though there are obviously better qualified people than I to do the original design. It is probably clear that East Moon's method of labels is already unsustainable as the number of members around cities like Sydney continue to grow. Perhaps coloured circles with an initial (or two) supported by a key -- or individual state maps?
If you are interested, contribute to this discussion so that we get, in the end, something that satisfies as many people as possible. It would be courteous to take into account East Moon's opinions if he replies to questions already asked in this forum, or to me personally.
What do you think, folks?

Welcome guys
Jellybean, I think seperate state is a bit discohesive. I don't want seperate identity of the northern and southern state.
If EastMoon does not mind, we can make the Australian land in a Q version (cartoon style). More wider in the eastern states and limit the land in the central desert. The dot form with initial is good. But it will be best to keep the whole name for something as short as Hymee, or Taka

I remade the AUS_NZ map on(with?) new style.
Please see map's link in first post on this Thread, and check your data (...and my English).

The new map is a slight improvement
What if we make the size of the land according to the population... you see NSW is so small and pack with people. NSW and Victoria have half the population of Australia.
If you want to keep the current graphics, I guess you can leave the Australia map on the left and do "zoom in" on the right hand side, as you are doing now.
I have the population of Australia by state for you

Then I could add a bit where anyone with GPS (and some other geeky bits like an IPaq / smart phone or similar and a SIM card could hook in and have a real-time position updates displayed on the map. :D
Sounds fancy? It is all possible with current technology, after all, that is what I do for a living!
Cheers,
Hymee.

Why are you up so late? I have an excuse or 2....
That is a good idea Hymee. There should be an autolog for the RX-8 spotting and fessing thread too.
Can we do it with mobile phones???

Late??? I'm sure there is an oriental proverb for looking at things from a different perspective! Early, my mate, early!
The wireless update of GPS data to a web server is something I have written code to do (successfully, I might add). Do you want me to give away trade secrets? Yes, it did involve a mobile phone, and used GPRS for the data transfer. The data transfer between the GPS/PDA combo was Bluetooth. We have even used some neat Bluetooth GPS devices.
The browser accessible maps with "real-time" updates (i.e moving dots) is real cool.
BTW - I wanted to add some (smart ****) comment regarding your connection with the population stats and your work, but I couldn't figure out something inoffensive. I guess at the end of each day, you and all your mates ring each other up for a tally, then cross a few off the totals, then you ring all you maternity mate and get another daily tally and add some others on?
What would the total daily Births and Deaths figures look like for this country?
Cheers,
Hymee.
