Another thing, the oil is injected proportional to the revs. Fang the thing on the racetrack.....have a tanker follow you around. Redline it four times a year like me.....use 3/4 of a litre every ten thousand km's.

Another thing, there is a Trip A and Trip B meter in front of you.
I always use Trip A as to check on the fuel mileage and use Trip B to remind me to check engine oil. I check everytime I reset Trip A, then I will have to go through Trip B before going back to Odometer. I always check engine oil every 1000km. But I don't add oil every time.
One more thing, make sure your dealer does not overfill your engine. Let them know how upset you will be when the oil level is over the high mark

Grand Prix (Aspley) have never overfilled my '8. They'll put in TXT Softec if you say nothing. If you ask for rotary oil, they'll put that in and leave the remaining half litre or so in the boot.
I keep my top up oil in the car, simply for the fact that I check mine very 2nd or third fill, so it's always handy when I'm at the servo and if I don't do it then I forget.

Hey Guys
I've now read a number of threads about oil use in the RX8 and this is obviously a burning issue for some of you.
My question is to those who have owned their car for a year or more. Do you find oil consumption lessens with the passage of time despite maintaining the same driving habits?
The reason I ask is that my car is about 11 months old and I bought it when it was 6 months old (as a demo) and well run in. I've checked the oil regularly since I got it and it doesn't seem to be using any, although I must admit it had a 10K service about a month after I got it. Is my car a freak example or am I just a ***** and not driving it hard enough.
Apologies if this is a tired topic for the regulars.

Yes, I reckon my oil consumption has reduced -- to less than 0.5 litre in 5,000k (I change oil and filter every 5,000k)....used to be as high as 1 litre over the same distance

I'm a first batch RX-8 owner, August '03 reg. I've got ~34,000km on the clock. Around town, I use about 150mL/1000km. HOWEVER, I'm a very light driver, with fuel consumption around town of a shade over 11L/100km. Six months after we got the car, we drove BNE-MEL and back, and used <500mL of oil for the whole trip. From what I've read, oil consumption is tied to the work the engine does. Drive it aggressively and it uses more oil.
Since Mazda Aspley put in the TXT Softec, I've topped up with Caltex synthetic. I weighed it up and decided that the better temperature/viscosity range of the synthetic was worth it.

I'm with Timbo, don't seem to to use much around town. Sucked down a little over christmas on a "twisty run" down south. 2k over a couple fo weeks with a decent wollop of 7-8k rpm when overtaking. Still no more than 300ml.
Mez...sounds like a whole lot of "snick" en and not too much rev-en.

Damn, I must be rev-happy or something. I only shift below 4500 when in heavy traffic. Otherwise I shift at about 6000 and red-line it about 5 times every time I drive it.
Now I know why my local petrol flogger loves me so much.

Based on that comment on your driving, Revolver, I'd expect your 8 to be drinking a bit of oil. The first half or so on the dip stick drops pretty quickly... like about 500ml to top up from the half way point. Are you sure yours isn't dropping? Even gentle driving will consume some as labrat attests.
Interesting comments Gomez on the shifts... thanks.
In case anyone is interested.. I shift around 3-4K when cold, around 5.5K if I need to gun it once she's had a bit of a run. I never redline without 15 minutes of good driving. But I try to redline when I get the chance given I do so many short trips. Probably get a redline in once a week to once a fortnight.

I should also add that although I don't mind revving it, I am similarly careful to both warm it up and keep it to only about 3500rpm for the first 10-15 mins.
I intend to monitor the oil much more carefully from now on. Thanks for the reply.

Up until friday last week I did nearly 1500km since I got the new flash and in that distance the oil level on the dipstick did not move. I was getting a little concerned that there must have been a reason it wasn't going down.
Then on the Friday in the space of 200km I used 800ml of oil. Thats 200km of 6000rpm plus enjoyment though. :D :D :D
How many laps of sandown is that
I have to say with this new flash both my oil & fuel consumption is down!

It's not quantity but quality. As you are yet to experience 200+ down the main straight really takes it out of you :p :D
I had to ease up on the amount of laps as my tyres were suffering. The last time I went out the 8 just wanted to slide through every corner, so I thought that's enough
