I believe Saabs and Alfas are excellent value for money when placed next to C Class Mercs and 3 series BMWs ... but you're right, the depreciation curve is quite violent ... but no where near as bad as when you buy a Mitsubishi!

At the end of the day, depreciation on our cars is average, so what are you complaining about?

Mitsubishi depreciation you are right about.

I bought mine in 2005 for $27K which was a 2003 model that listed new for $49K.
When I sold it for the 8 wholesale on it was $13 and retail was $16.
It dropped like a rock from new.

The 8's are holding pretty well considering the way cars drop in price.

Besides I am going to hang on to it till it is a classic and then sell it for a profit.

A mate was telling me yesterday about the Alfa he bought in 2000, which cost him $75K OTR. When he sold it 3 years later, it had lost almost 70% of its original purchase price

I reckon those are classic cases of the market recognising that most Euro cars are overpriced to begin with. Talk to guys who buy the premium large Bimmers, Mercs, Audi's, etc - they all take a bath come trade-in/resale time. 750i's come to mind...

If you can afford a $200 000 car then you probabaly have enough money so that a 75% drop at resale probabaly doesn't hurt as much.

Besides you are already paying over the top to buy it, when you service it, when you insure it, when you crash it, so if you sell it and you get shafted, i'm sure your'e already used to tasting the **** end of the stick.

Pensioner moment....my car has just this very day clicked over to 48,000kms... I aged him prematurely......hang on I think I do that to all males though!!!

Yes will be interesting to see what I get ....I did make a profit on my Honda when I sold that.......being in sales helps when selling cars.......

Yes they loose $$ and some even loose weight...they still lighten themselves with tin worm or the paint falls off....my old boss bought his wife a 147, Black....3 years on and the paint is falling off. The dealer is trying to tell him it's the polish he is using.... I think more it's the crappy way they spray them......

My accountant gave me a list when I went car shopping. On it in big red letters was this advice.

Anything over $60k will cost you in LCT. Saab, Volvo, Peugot, Renault, Baby Bimmers will all cost you when it comes to sell. Good advice. Nah I am going to see how I go with my car. There are only 2 2008 8's advertised in Adelaide on car sales last time I looked. Reckon mine would look quite good on there. Considering what they are selling for in stealerships I reckon I can back myself!!! One careful lady owner, full service history, new tyres and fastidiously kept and presented.......what dealer can offer that!

I'd hate to think how much it cost him in maintenance on top of that. I considered a 147 GTA but wasn't too keen on the 60K timing belt intervals or the weak 6K gearboxes.

Dr Gonzo you chose the right car. I had a timing belt let go before the service....it was not nice....very ugly indeed.... My husband is an Alfa trained mechanic and he won't even touch the new ones now.... he says Alfa should be making cars more like the 8 and keeps comparing everything back to the 8. Not bad for someone who said he would never let a rotary under the roof!!! Now he loves it!
