Yes, because its 50kg lighter.
Why is this ground breaking? Cloth pack is the same.
Mazda will remove some luxury specification – such as Bose stereo and sunroof – to shed about 50kg from the RX-8’s kerb weight to ensure it’s the fastest-accelerating model in the range. The RX-8 range-topper should break the six-second barrier in the 0-100km/h sprint, with the current model claiming 6.2sec.

Possibly an attempt at exactly what they say "to ensure it’s the fastest-accelerating model in the range" not sure specifically about the MPS3 (Not particularly interested in 0-100km times). Personally I think the removal of the stereo is a good thing. Most people want to replace that piece of poo Bose anyway and the sunroof, well its a personal thing.
If you have a current model and want faster 0-100 then remove your rear and passenger seat

Depends how you look at it, but in a straight line over 1/4 mile about 1 sec I think.

There was a lot of anger on the Rx8 forum about the MPS 3 having quikcer 0-100 times. That's what I'm guessing is the reason. Personally I agree with you, its more about the twistees, but a lot of people questioned why the flagship (Rx8) would (a) cost more and (b) be slower.

Well, back on topic, they've also changed the gear ratios on the upcoming model to pull 0-100 times under 6 seconds according to some of the articles floating around.

I have only "read" final drive, and I dont see how that can affect acceleration times. But as I pointed out elsewhere, it looks like the gearbox is different, look at the shift pattern. I wonder if its the same gearbox with different internals, new model or totally different???

I wouldn't trust drive.com.au to tell me how many wheels it has. It's just one long advertorial for the manufacturers.
I'll wait until it gets tested but I tend to agree about 0-100 times. Although it deserves more power for the chassis it has and should be the quickest car in Mazda's range, there'll always be plenty of hi-po taxis that will beat it in TLGP's.

RX-8 when it is launched was a 6.2 sec. I wonder anyone achieve that.
But I also agree that the gear box is new and hope it is a close ratio. And I hope it is transferable to the current model. Then I have no reserve (except for spare cash) to break the gearbox.
I wonder if it changes anything in the ECU or it runs funny if I change the gear ratio. Don't think so....

I believe gearing in first is too tall ... we lose off the line acceleration because of it. If they shorten it and keep the rest the same I'd be happy. But you're right on making 6th a genuine overdrive.

But in everyday traffic I'm not gonna be launching my car. It'd be nice just to lazily accelerate over the other traffic rather than waiting for 6000rpms.
