Shell nuts - Shell Optimax Extreme

http://www.shell.com/home/Framework?...t_extreme.html

Shell Optimax Extreme is a new super-high octane fuel with a minimum octane rating of 100, the highest currently available at any Australian service station. Shell Optimax Extreme is formulated with 5% ethanol.

I remember speaking to a Shell rep at a club meet just after Optimax was released. He stated categorically that Optimax's price was to be pegged at a point 4 cents/litre higher than that of regular unleaded...and it was, for six months. How many cents/litre rise is this one going to be??

This is just another marketing rip-off. What sort of upper cylinder lubricant, high detergent, high density, more molecules/litre spiel are they going to spin our way this time? Or are we going to hear just how good this is for the environment?

Hello? Labrat?? The Labrat loves ethanol......

WTF

Another petrol. The way they said it - it is made up of additives and ethanol.

Maybe I will get 1/2 tank of this extreme crap and find out next Tuesday

Interesting concept...hit the ethanol detractors by offering a higher octane, "higher performance" petrol with 5% ethanol. I wonder who will get sucked in?

If I think about this too hard, I start to think about diesel...diesel, with a hydrogen injection system. Check this out

If you check out the Shell website, all their fuels claim to have the same additive package. I suspect the 5% EtOH is a sop to the feds, a bit of jump before they're pushed.

My feeling is that unless you're doing serious track work super Optimax isn't necessary, in fact from what you guys have been saying lately, all you need is 95RON ("normal" PULP) to prevent any pinging.

I have been working on some advertising stuff with Shell for almost a year on that. I told a couple of the guys at our Lake Mountain BBQ/drive about it months back.

With what I have seen some cars benefit some don't. It all depends on the quality of the ECU and if it can advance the timing etc enough. I think the real benefit will be for those who can tune their cars to this fuel!

As I have stated elsewhere, I just don't think the 8 benefits from higher octane above 95. Certainly, no-one has brought forward any empirical evidence showing either higher output or better fuel economy..or both. My fuel consumption data shows no difference. Maybe it's "cleaner" but then how do we prove that?

Any one seen the latest Fifth gear.

They dyno the car in a chassis dyno from 3 cars. One is a NA small car, a VW Golf GTi and a Suby WRX.

The benefit show more in the WRX with 98 giving 10hp+ more than the 95 Octane.

Maybe someone can do that in the Renesis?

Actually that makes lots of sense - We filled with Vorchux before the Nats - no wonder our times were down....

Spoke to an Indian guy wearing "ask me anything about Optimax Extreme" T shirt.

He said Optimax Extreme is same as Optimax + ethanol. And ethanol is such a powerful "burner" fuel that will give you a cleaner and more powerful acceleration . It is good for your RX-8.

BELIEVE IT .... OR NOT

Have 15L of it and hopefully the car will not fall apart

Well they are having a big song and dance marketing launch at the Shell Servo next door on Coro Drive.

I guess they can afford a big marketing budget cause it is about 13 cents per litre dearer.

Cheers,
Hymee.

<Gasp!> I think I'll be trying 95 PULP, especially as we've moved and I don't get Coles dockets anymore. I don't see how they can fit another product into the servos, since they're already offering diesel, gas, 91, 95 and 98. The queues are bad enough already on low price Wednesday, without increasing the product range.

Actually, if they don't turn over the 100RON quickly enough, I might start to worry about condensation and goolies growing in the servo tanks. Perhaps also the stuff can go stale as well if the volatiles evaporate on ageing.

I was thinking, does that mean that they can bring on proper JDM specced cars meaning the full 184kW S2000, RX8 etc.?

Or are there other reason for them detuning the car besides petrol before they bring it here?

AFAIK, only for personal imports (ie. owing the car 12months in another country)

Yes, the water dissolves in the alcohol and the alcohol dissolves in the petrol. However, keep on adding water, and the alcohol decides it likes the water better than the petrol, and separates out. It's at the water/petrol interface that you get the bug-growing problems. Another problem with alcohol is that it is "hygroscopic" meaning it attracts water vapour out of the atmosphere. The hydrocarbons in ordinary petrol don't attract water to the same extent.

I found out about the bugs in fuel when I started out as a lab assistant in the old defence labs years ago. Because jet aircraft were discharging remaining fuel back into the ground tanks, fuel rapidly became contaminated around the world - spreading the infection of the bugs. It seems like the bugs live in the water but get the energy to live on from the fuel - not much of a life I grant you, but there you are.

I think I will give it a miss.

About the new MX5 I found Mazda has said the engine will run on up to a 10% blend fine but later say they cannot fully recommend the use of the fuel becuase the rubber fuel lines are not 100% compatible with the slightly corrosive nature of the ethanol blends and thus can not guarantee the reults of longer term use.

It's just enough for me to sit back and say Hmmm... maybe I'll wait!
