So i ran out of petrol on the road...

Should i do an oil change?

I was revving it pretty hard thinking I still had more than I did and lo and behold the gas cut out, the revs dropped, CEL and coasted to a stop.

I'm up for a service soon in 5000kms and just filled her up with 3L of rotary goodness. Bit reluctant to do the dirty work and throw away brand new oil but a little concerned at toasting the oil when I ran without petrol.

Just heard it through the grapevine.
Glad that I haven't messed anything up.
I don't know why I always think I can suck just a little bit more out of the tank.
I'm always trying to set a personal best on mileage. Should stop being so stubborn. lol

Yeah i usually do that and find with normal city driving I can juice out another 50kms. Maybe closer to 60km if I'm lucky.

I think I was edging for 60km this time and just ran outta luck.

Was so close to the servo as well.

I ran out of petrol a couple of times and I thoughtit was me, but it was related to the fuel sender unit on the petrol tank. One of the diodes used to guage the level of petrol in the tank must have shorted out and the needle wasn't moving under about a quarter tank.

I think you can get 70k out of it when the light comes on, the tanks should all be calibrated the same, but I guess it depends on how you drive it

Why risk to have air in your fuel line?

It doesn't matter too much Taka because the fuel system self-primes.

Mogley, if your car keeps running out of petrol, you should start to take steps to make sure it dosen't happen again. If not, you will continue to run out and be stranded. This lesson actually spawns across all aspects of our life. I learn't the hard way (once) and I always keep the tank above 1/4.

The extra 'stash' will always get me to or from a reasonable distance in the event of an unexpected emergency...

Mate, I used to go with the mind set "how many k's can I squeeze out of this light". I now go with "Geez, I got the xxx k's until the light cam on this tank". It makes no difference to your economy. The car is no more or less efficient with 1/4 or 1/8th of a tank of fuel (not that you are going to notice anyway). And its safer and less embarrassing.

Cheers

Andrew

I never used to run out of gas with any other car i've owned . It's just something about the crap gas mileage that makes me want to squeeze something more out of the tank .....

Yeah but thats what I am saying...your milage doesnt increase! you have traveled further using more petrol. The rate you use petrol doesnt magically get better the lower your fuel tank is (again, not by figures we can notice).

I just fill up when it gets low.

Why play chicken with something you can't gauge accurately? I don't need that kind of hassle.

Are you sure your not living on the edge cause your at uni with no job?

I know how it feels. In these cases, I usually stick to PT until I feel I'm fit to take on the road.

HAh that's exactly my thoughts too.
It was quite embarrassing for me actually because I was trying to redline her off the lights and by the time i got into 2nd gear the accelerator just stopped working.

Nothing humbles you more than coasting into a side street with hazards on and angry drivers changing lanes.

"cmmon baby just a little bit more momentum... u can do it... im sorry for lettnig u run out of petrol "

Because petrol is cheaper on Tuesdays and I can't be arsed to fill up twice a week.

WTF? You'd use two tanks in a week?

I usually fill up when I'm very empty, especially since I had the fuel guage replaced as I'm trying to work out whether it's going to fail on me again!

Generally, I don't really care how much petrol costs, I just hate filling up with petrol. It's such a waste of time!

There's certainly days when the 5-10 mins it takes are a pain but running out is much more painful.

When I was younger I used to go on surf trips a lot with a bunch of mates in 2-3 cars. One of them (who had a clapped out yellow Monaro) was notorious for letting his petrol run low and we all warned him time and time again that it was a bad habit. Sure enough, one day he ran out in the middle of Royal National Park on the way back from the south coast. So, the two of us in his car grabbed our boards and jumped into the other 2 cars and left him there to sort it out himself. He got home eventually having learned a good lesson (and how to hitchhike, lol). Harsh but fair. He said himself several years later (when he was talking to us again, hahaha) that he deserved it.
