When I was younger I used to go on surf trips a lot with a bunch of mates in 2-3 cars. One of them (who had a clapped out yellow Monaro) was notorious for letting his petrol run low and we all warned him time and time again that it was a bad habit. Sure enough, one day he ran out in the middle of Royal National Park on the way back from the south coast. So, the two of us in his car grabbed our boards and jumped into the other 2 cars and left him there to sort it out himself. He got home eventually having learned a good lesson (and how to hitchhike, lol). Harsh but fair. He said himself several years later (when he was talking to us again, hahaha) that he deserved it.
Remind me never to come to another cruise without a full tank again.
lol

Because I WILL leave you there, lol.

Mechanical failure will always get my sympathy. Brain failure does not...

My first car didn't have a working fuel gauge. I used to carry a jerry can and hose in the boot. I probably used it a half a dozen times.

In the 8 I drove from Stanthorpe to Warwick (60km) well after the light was on. I had about 4 litres left in the tank when I got there.

I suspect you have about 100km of 100kmh cruising when the light comes on. I wouldn't push it though.

This information has been useful if anyone else is caught in a similar situation.

Theres a lot to be said for strategic thinking though....its prevents the embarrassment and the dramas...
