I like change and variety too, which is why I don't wish to return to the hatchback years...been there, done that. I think it's a boring body style, no matter how you jazz them up or rationalise the decision.
And as I've repeatedly said, I'm quite happy to flog the 8 when another affordable decent looking 4 seat coupe gets released onto the market. Thus far, zippo!
As for family cars, we've owned several, so that line doesn't work for that decision either.

My brother works for another manufacturer in dealer support and after years of travelling around country dealerships that also sell Subaru that is pretty much his take on it.

Thanks. Nice to know...
Tossing up whether to test the V50 this weekend. Will probably give them a go.
Then I need to decide whether to wait a year for a second hand Outback or go for a shiny new one...decisions decisions!

You're just cranky because I can see through the rip off pricing of euro cars and refuse to buy something German or a diesel.
Anyone who actually bought and owned one of the old two box Volvo wagons is in denial by persistently calling something else ugly. I can only assume that having to continually rationalise that humiliating experience has left you deeply scarred...

Hmmm... the (barrista) doth protest too much, methinks.
No, I meant isn't the current 2010 ugly just a facefall (well, it's hard to call it a facelift ) of the previously and equally ugly 2009 model, which has the same tech spec...hence a better value buy?
Hey, I'm just trying to help here, but there is a strong case to make this decision in private, you know

No, you're wrong about facefall/lift whatever you want to subjectively call it. The 6 cyl engine choice has gone from 3.0 to 3.6 and the whole body is different. It's now a larger wagon than previously and hence the cargo area is bigger and more useable. A number of other changes too with the tech spec. You do know a whole new Liberty/Outback got released this month, yeah? That's what I'm talking about, not the facelifted previous model.
In your own **** stirring way I know you're trying to help and I appreciate it. I've actually found it helpful to workshop it in here and frankly I don't give a **** what anyone else thinks about my decision provided I'm happy with it.
If the thread is annoying anyone I'll delete it when I've decided...

And it's true, I CBF finding out the specs of 2010 fugly vs 2009. But, fair dinkum, if you're going for 3.6L, why not a Landie with a 4.2L TDI V8 oiler...hehehe

Hahaha, yes, new is sounding much better when you put it that way. And remember, it's a family car - provided everything fits and it's not a slug, I'm happy...and of course I've found a great use for the $10K I've saved on the Passat.
There's a cure for that jealousy...

Hey Dave...are you still getting that fugly Subaru?
If you haven't bought it, here's something else to consider. It's still "unpleasant" but, by crikey, it's a decent spec at a good price. I wonder if it can be rebodied?

Timbo, a real risk he will surrounded by Sea Shepard boats and then still speared by some Japanese "lunchbox filling" research craft.
Drove one of them non 4wd versions as a rental, have to admit wasn't a bad little drive and a bloody cheap!

I'll be the first to admit that the new Outback ain't ever gonna win Miss Universe but that Hyundai is a filthy dog that should be put down. What a bloated parody. I quite agree that the spec and price looks reasonable and they seem to have lifted their game generally in quality and dynamics but I think washing the chunder off the driveway every morning would get old.
Anyway, after being raped by our pool builders, our Mazda 6 is looking like a great family car for the next little while...
