SSR Competition (Type C) Wheels

Guys and gals, what do you think of the SSR Competitions 18x8 (in anthracite) for my titanium 8? Seem to be a good light wheel (7.4kgs) with a decent reputation judging by the digging around that I have done this afternoon.

Anybody have these wheels? Anybody know who stocks them in Sydney (quick web search hasn't turned anybody up). Can buy them through tirerack but I wanted to compare some local prices.

Quick guys, I think he needs an intervention...

Dave...you know what this is going to lead to, don't you....the start of a very expensive 'habit'. Keep clean son, keep clean :p

IMHO, if you change your wheels, you should do so wrt the capability you want to achieve -- looks, handling, wider tyre choice....

And finally, FWIW, those are nice looking wheels

Taka, you're a champion.

Thanks for the link. Always easier when you find someone who has travelled down the same road previously.

Tell me about it. I've jumped off the slippery slope by ordering my Hymee catback and now I'm fixated on stuff like getting lighter wheels, a CAI, sways, lightened flywheel, etc, etc. The ATO will have to catch me first! :p :D :D

As for your other words of caution - the SSR Comps seem to fit the bill. I love how they look and they are a bit less than 3/4s of the weight of the stock wheels so the benefit in reducing the unsprung weight will surely improve handling. A remaining query is whether I buy them in 8.5" to get a better fit with 245/40s and thus increase my tyre choice or stick with 8.0", use my OEM tyres (which will make the initial $$ hit much easier to take) and then worry about replacement tyres later (e.g. Michelins or Pirellis).

Thanks Eric.

Can't find a price list on the site - will have to make an enquiry I guess.

I did look at the BBS forged wheels but from what I can tell, in order to get down to the weight of the SSR's you need to buy BBS RE Mg's and if you think the SSRs are exxy the magnesium BBS's will make your eyes water (nearly double the price).

And I'm not rich - just stupido! :D

Those are nice wheels.

If I ever get new wheels, it will be to put some 265's on the back to keep my FI'd **** on the road!

This is my other choice - Volk Racing TE37 forged magnesium 18x8.5

Pros - lighter again than the SSR Comp's (5.85 kgs ), lovely dark blue colour .

Cons - will have to win Powerball judging by the price I just got quoted ($US4,350 for 4 wheels before shipping, duty and GST ), will be frightened to leave my car unattended for more than 30 seconds (even with a set of Ray's lockable lugnuts).

To be honest, anything shipped from the states will incur missve tax aswell as

heavy costs on the good itself. I could recommend you to nissansilvia.com

for rims that are both used and new at prices no where to be found under the

vendor forum. Or if interested in those SSR's, I'd advise you to talk to LittleJohn

who has these exact wheels with PilotSport 2's and the set look a treat! Try to get

them to mark it as a gift aswell. Kill the import duty.

Thanks Tuan

I'll check out that site.

I'm trying to track LJ down. Who knows, he may be unhappy that someone else is planning to get the same wheel. :o :D

No worries Revolver.
Just as an example, he quoted me 3200 for 4 VOLK GT-C in gold with chrome lip in
19x8.5F and 19x9R.
They're slightly used buit immaculate. Some deals come with tyres good/perfect tread left.
There's a whole range there, just have patience to flick through. Save you cash!.
They have Japanese Hookups and claim that Japs are honest and doing business with them
is a pleasure. (look for a guy nicked mxfly (eugnene))

Gift or no gift..
Taxes are all the same...
The only way you get around taxes is if it's a warranty and the retailer marks it as as N/C on the invoice

dear oh dear...
they were my other choice too...

Too me... one of the most appealing things about the 8 is the "style", the 8 ooozes finese and refinement.. everywhere you look the lines flow and transition into each other. As much as I like the Volks as wheel by itself. I didn't feel that it blended into the overall theme of the 8.
The broader spokes screamed big ***** (and to me.. that's V8 territory) so if you plan on getting the MS body kit.. the Volks would work really well.
Since I have no plans of ever getting the MS body kit I chose the SSR Comps because the thinner spokes blended in better with the "theme" of the 8.
As a bonus when I recieved the parcel... the Anthracite is basically Ti Grey :D initally I thought it would be more a darker gun metal grey...
The polish lip breaks up the Ti Grey just the right amount to make the whole package schmick.. imo D:D

Some good advice there, thanks.

I know what you're saying. In fact, some of the BBS wheels with 'Y' spokes look really good on the 8 but to get really light forged magnesium BBS wheels is to basically say, here's my wallet, I won't need it any more. :D

The other thing is that whatever I get, I want it to be appreciably lighter than the stock wheel. Otherwise, it's just a vanity purchase and if I'm going to spend big $$ I want them to do more than just look pretty. :D

I'll keep looking at different options while saving.

Agree with you totally. That's why I chose the Enkei RP03's for my car. To me they work with and compliment the 8's lines and dont fight against them! People don't say "Damn look at those wheels", but instead I hear "damn look at that car!" A harmony of design is what I love (must be the designer in me)

What do the Enkei's weigh Stuart?
