Street Racing Fools...
#26
snoo, everyone.
Most people that want to race their cars on the street are more in it for the 'hero' status. Big network of forums provided on the internet that gets your car's kills status published for free.
I believe their are 3 catagories of racing/speeding on the street and each person fits into one or all of these catagories.
Street Racing : You have your average teen to mid 20's guy/gal who loves to go to the illegal runs hang out with mates cars and cruise to industrial places to street race. Everyone is always behind the starter line(including other people cars etc) race to near end of the road with safe distance to stop. The car in front at the finish line flashes there hazards to let everyone else know who won.
Advantages:
1)Street Credit
2)Self Satisfaction of having a faster car
Disadvantages:
1) You dont win a prize to replace that burn clutch from all the dump starts over 6 grand.
2)Cops rock up after maybe 4 runs then you have to move. If you are lucky enough to be racing at that time your car gets imbounded for three months.
3)Heavy fines etc.
4) Various other things that can go wrong like a truck pull into the top street, industrial area doesnt mean everyone closes at 6pm.
Highway Cruising-This can relate to mid 20's upwards. As snoo mentioned above highway cruising at higher than recommended speeds. Fanging along and being as one with the car, feeling every corner as you tighten the steering wheel that little bit extra as you play with the boundaries of your car.
Advantages :
1)Self Satisfaction
2)Learning to drive your car to its limits
3)Pressing those limits and your car responding the way you expected.
Disadvantages:
1)Heavy fines can apply not only for speeding but for neg driving.
2) Much nature and cliffs you can hit/fall over at a break of concentration point.
3)You can always find those dame slow drivers infront of you with a tail of traffic following.
Track Racing/Cruising - For people who watched days of thunder way to many times or enjoy a nice safer environment to further extend the limits of their cars. Taking your car to the track is fun, taking corners at high speeds with safety gravel/sand and other safety features of professional tracks keeps this sport legal.
Advantages:
1) Self Satifaction - boy racer, Tom Cruise etc eat your heart out my car can make it on the track too.
2)Safety professionals at hand.
3)Emergency Professionals at hand.
4) Track in most conditions suitable to race/speed on.
Disadvantages:
1) Cost money to get cams license and pay for track days/club fees
2) wear and tear tyres brakes etc.
One thing is common with all sorts of racing and that is we do it for self satisfaction. We love the feeeling, the frill, the adrenalin of going fast, taking corners at speeds we all know we should not be doing.
Spirited driving in all sense.. safe driving is limited to the drivers experience.
Lets not all hate on each other because we all have our own different taste, what makes each and everyone one of us and our cars unique.
People die on the road as they do on the track and taking a nice long corner on a higway road where a truck just spilled some oil. It happens, its life, its not fare to lose a loved one its not right to live with the guilt.
What are we going to do? Stop the world from turning are we going to stop being individuals. Stop people from breaking the laws stop people living their own lives.
yes, i have raced a car at the illegal runs, yes i have taken some mountain roads at some awsome speeds, yes iv been to the track, yes i have done my Green Light GP.
All with various cars at various ages at varies stages of my life.
Lets use our experience, our forum to express to people, there is more to our cars than racing on the street, on the track at the set of lights or to the drive through at Maccers.
We can open a whole new world of Zoom Zoom to our older drivers and our younger drivers.
Thank you for reading.

Phillip

Thankfully, this is not going to be one of those forums where road kills get published for free.
Choppy - you mentioned "3 categories of racing/speeding on the street", but you really only listed 2. With respect, your weighing up of the pros/cons of each category is badly maligned.
You mentioned the disadvantages of the only kosha form was "track fees" and "wear and tear". Why is that not wear and tear a disadvantage of the illegal exploits mentioned? And as for track fees, I pay something like $25/year for a track licence at QR. My fees for the right drive on the road are lots/lots more than that each year.
Yes - we need to publicly encourage the track days, and discourage "street racing".
Cheers,
Hymee.

Every set of lights i had a smile on my face and the M5 felt so good at 190km/h but then i could not take it past that point with six gear flat stick would not redline
Had to then slow down as the m5 was blocked so i had to go long way home..

In this March 3 thread, I spoke of doing 240 on a Kwakka.....this was not long after you born, I was stupid and I don't do that anymore. I learnt, now I'm trying to educate others. Call it selfish community service.
I hope to get you and others to see the forest, before you plow through it, or me......or my family. Like BVD, I've managed to avoid the fatal crashes that quite a few mates didn't.
I'm 39 now, I'd like to be able chew the fat with you on this subject if you reach my age....
Love, Dad.

I have to agree with Hymee on the Vic attitude. The tolerances for speeding are less than the ADRs on speedo's and it does drive the wrong behavior - watching the speedo instead of the road.
Straight line speed has never done it for me. The RX-8 is a great car to enjoy at safe speeds... it is built for the twisties... and doesn't have to be on a track to be at its best.
No points for guessing that's why I bought it.

Some years ago I was going on a run through the hills on a club run. Right in front of me there was a rock which all other cars drove over, my car which was significantly lowered had it's sump ripped out. The effect was more spectacular than an old Ferrari F1 blowing it's turbo. If I were doing legal speeds I would have driven around this quiet easily. Doesn't matter how good you are at drivinf and how good your car is, incidents do occur beyond your control which may have disaterous effects. A race car I owned was written off at Mallala last year when the person driving came into a corner too hot and too close to another car, he was doing an estimated 180km/hr, didn't brake, hit the curb got airborn and landed into a tyre wall cracking the concrete wall behind it in half. This bloke was a very experienced track driver, luckily he managed to walk out, thanks to no oncoming traffic, no trees, no stobie poles, no pedestrians, no buildings, a saftey harness and a roll cage. This can easliy happen in street racing with even more disasterous effects. Luck, of you keep testing it, does eventually run out.
If you want the "hero status" go to the track. For some reason everybody talks about the excessive cost. Unless I'm tight when I go out on the town, I always find that track time is far cheaper than a good night out in town!
So the road ruls may not be to our liking, and there are plenty of arguments for and against, the rules are the rules, like it or not.
I thinks our speed limits stink. A person driving a Datsun 120Y at 110Km/hr on the highway believes he is as little a hazard as an RX8 on the same stretch of road at the same speed. Why? because the laws allow him that luxury. Unfortunately the politicians believe that regulating speed limits is a far easier solution to road safety than giving us better roads, enforcing better driver education, removing hazardous motor vehicles.
After all, it's all about revenue raising and votes!
Nonetheless while we share the roads with other users road racing is not on!

AMG thats a valid point but for some1 like say "L&L" he could not just go for 1 but both go out and have track days.:p
Yes but i do agree with your point on people saying its too expensive. If you speed, and get caught you deserved it.
just remember
1 fine = 1 track day
1 fine = seafood platter
1 fine = somewhere nice im sure L&L will take you :D
So if you way it up it aint worth it.

AMG is right, it is way cheaper to go to the track then to go around speeding on public roads...
30-45 over = 565 dollar fine + 3 months suspension
day at the track = 110-200 odd ( im guessing)
for the record a night on the town in sydney =150 to whatever
you do the math

I'm on assignment in Samoa at the moment....I can report there is NO street racing scene here at all! In fact the thousands of corolla taxis have a top speed of about 50kph.
Speeds limits in the city are 25mph, 35mph out on the "open road"....!
And I haven't seen a single Mazda yet......I'm certain it's an RX-8 free zone.....
Gomez.
