I really feel for the city and its residents, but there a number of things which have obviously militated to make things very bad. I've touched on the underlying poverty and violence, but there's also some other factors. Firstly, the ready availability of weapons. It's important for American to note that we have a conservative government, but it was our current prime minister who severely restricted the availability of firearms. The American NRA consistently lies about the gun violence in Australia, which has decreased significantly since the ban on weapons. Secondly, the entire structure of government particularly that devoted to law enforcement is so fragmented in the USA. With so many types and levels of police forces, it is clearly difficult to have a coordinated command structure in cases of emergency.

Yes he took the firearms away from the law abiding citizens , who did the rigth thing and handed their weapons in , but all the criminals , bikies etc have still got theirs , bigger and better than ever , also he greated a huge black market in weapons and drove the price higher making it a real profitable enterprise for crooks .

...and if a criminal wants/needs a gun for his own purposes, ain't no law you can pass that will stop him getting one, however driving the price higher restricts the pool of potential criminals who can afford to get one.

I don't have anything against firearms as long as they're in their proper place - in the army. I used to be a very good shot when I was in the cadets and later the weekend warriors. I learned a huge amount of respect for them along the way, too.

However, guns should NEVER be stored in the home (unless the bolt is securely stored somewhere else).
