Thank You Aussies....

I just saw a report where you have donated a LARGE sum of money (700 Million) I think to the American Red Cross for Hurricane relief. Plus 6 disaster experts to work with FEMA (that the Federal Emergency Management Agency in the US).

THANK YOU!!!

Best wishes to all the people who have been caught up in this nightmare.

Truly shocking what is going on over there.

Hope it comes good soon.

We've been to a couple of trade shows in New Orleans at the convention centre where the Aussie tourists were trapped. I'm a traditional jazz dag, and it meant so much walking the streets where it all began. Even today, you can find great music in New Orleans. There's a restaurant across the road from the convention centre called Mulate's where they play great Cajun two-step music, and you can dance there too. However, New Orleans has always been a dangerous city, and you have to watch out for yourself all the time. There's some really poor areas very close to the French Quarter, and muggings are frequent.

I really feel for the city and its residents, but there a number of things which have obviously militated to make things very bad. I've touched on the underlying poverty and violence, but there's also some other factors. Firstly, the ready availability of weapons. It's important for American to note that we have a conservative government, but it was our current prime minister who severely restricted the availability of firearms. The American NRA consistently lies about the gun violence in Australia, which has decreased significantly since the ban on weapons. Secondly, the entire structure of government particularly that devoted to law enforcement is so fragmented in the USA. With so many types and levels of police forces, it is clearly difficult to have a coordinated command structure in cases of emergency.

Yes he took the firearms away from the law abiding citizens , who did the rigth thing and handed their weapons in , but all the criminals , bikies etc have still got theirs , bigger and better than ever , also he greated a huge black market in weapons and drove the price higher making it a real profitable enterprise for crooks .

There's some truth in that Michael but I know from colleagues that there has been a huge reduction in resort to firearms in domestic disputes because they are simply no longer as freely available in the home. That has got to be a good thing.

...and if a criminal wants/needs a gun for his own purposes, ain't no law you can pass that will stop him getting one, however driving the price higher restricts the pool of potential criminals who can afford to get one.

... and that's exactly what I'm driving at. Most gun deaths in this country have been traditionally been from domestics.

I don't have anything against firearms as long as they're in their proper place - in the army. I used to be a very good shot when I was in the cadets and later the weekend warriors. I learned a huge amount of respect for them along the way, too.

You'd be surprised. Guns that are stolen in the first instance are in the main sold to other criminals to commit crimes with.

I have no difficulty with legitimate gun clubs that maintain a secure arsenal arrangement. Ditto with responsible hunters of pests and vermin.

However, guns should NEVER be stored in the home (unless the bolt is securely stored somewhere else).
