Question Tint interfering with rear window ariel and AM reception

Folks,

What type of tint are you putting on the windows? Double metal, Single metal & dye or just dye?

The reason being is that I hear that double metal (and possibly single metal) tints interfere with the rear window mounted ariel causing the loss of AM band reception. Is this true?

Is anyone using double metal tint film?

Thanks, Stoli.

I had heard the same thing when we tinted my wife's Volvo, so to play it safe we just had the "regular" tint (dye) put on.

I was having the conversation with my tinting guy (like I should have the first time) about this when we were going to tint my 8, and he laughed and pointed out that the tint is on the inside of the window and the antenna is on the OUTSIDE!

I felt really stupid for a second, until he explained that the metal tints (all of them) will reflect "free" energy through the antenna, causing interference with *certain* bands of AM. So, if driving under a power transmission line, you may experience interference (on certain AM stations) for a couple of seconds, until you are clear of the energy.

I had him install the most expensive metallic tint he had (sorry, don't know if it was double or single metal). I do listen to talk radio (AM band) a lot, and have only noticed the interference on ONE occasion, and the tint has been on for 5 weeks.

Does that help???

Thanks for that.

It does help. I will try metal film and advise how I go.

Cheers, Stoli

I HAD to change the orange lenses, I thought they didn't go very well (and certainly not as well as the clear) with the yellow. That was the second thing I did (polished wheels was first).

My co-driver and I have been running the numbers 54 and 154 for years with my Miata - we just thought we would keep the same numbers. In the SCCA, you are required (on a two driver car) to have the second number 100 higher than the first for National level autocross (maybe known as time trials at your end).
