Titanium RX-7 and RX-8 Brisbane about 12:30

Saw a Titanium RX-7 and RX-8 driving side by side heading south on the SE Freeway at 12:30 today. What a sight. Didn't notice the RX-7 until I turned back. Wow! Was it anyone who's been lurking here?

Wasn't me - but I must have been close at the time!

Not I, but uncanny timing..

I did a quick zip up from Sydney to Pamona ( 20 mins inland from Noosah ) to give my new 8 a decent leg stretch [ with my younger brother flying co-pilot ] around the same time, and uncannily had a fun cruise ( and the occasional "is that RX8 faster than my Turbo RX7?" ) tests with some darn fine folk we came accross as we here heading south back to Sydney, passing through the turn off from Sunshine coast way to the Brisbane airport.

The RX7 guys were comming back from some race meet by the look as they had hanging from their rear view mirror a "Competitor" type race meet pass.

There were a few cars in their group, a Nissan, Honda, Hyundai, something else I can't recall and the RX7, they were having a fun cruise home by the look heading south when we caught up with them [ brother and I ].

We left them at the Qld/NSW border with waves and smiles etc - nice bunch.

Sounds like you had fun... so is the RX-8 faster than the RX-7 turbo?

There was a S6 black RX7 at my work on Friday, had been dropped, had great 19"s on it, huge exhaust.. I wanted to get a pic next to it but it was raining the proverbial cats and dogs...

Thanks Rob - for the welcome and again for your help putting me in touch with Hymee, still not sure why I couldn't post after I signed up but I'm here finally and bursting to post my nut off..

> Sounds like you had fun... so is the RX-8 faster than the RX-7 turbo?

SCO, actually, I had a blast - the weird thing is that I've never really been a "car" person per se, and it was my wife who essentially said to me "go buy a new car or something.." that saw me rock on up to test drive a few cars, I looked at the likes of Masarati, Subaru, etc, but I ended up sitting in a freind's demo [ Tim @ Euro Mazda in Artarmon, Sydney, NSW ] thinking - hey this is the car that was in that weird movie XMen II - wow..

<rant>

And I've done quite a bit of flying in my life ( license out of currency now bugger it ) since a young age, I knew what a blast it was to do formation flying ( even did some competitive kite flying too with six up in formation ) - but nothing would have prepared me for the mind rush of zipping down a four land freeway with four of us wide, two cars deep, in pretty close formation * eek *

I don't know who the other folk were, but they were clearly decent crew and there was a mix of guys, girls, and even a young guy with what must have been his son in the passenger seat.

I picked them up around 15 mins north of the left hand turn from the road into Brisbane ( from the sunshine coast ) that heads off to the Brisbane airport, and they were already running two cars wide, three deep, and not driving weird, dangerous, or fast for that matter. Just in close formation and clearly having fun doing it.

So when I found myself driving along side the RX7, we got a couple of big "G'day" smiles and waves from the driver and his pal, and we swapped the obligatory "nice car" smiles ( his RX7 was pretty neat actually, despite a little rice and a throaty exhaust ), I swear I slotted into a zone mentally and here I was cruising and the adrenaline ( sp!? ) pumping.. wahoo!

The bugger dropped from what must have been fifth to third and dropped the clutch and dragged off, and it took me a few seconds to get it together to give chase ( safely thank you ) to where he backed off and smiled about taking me down - but the next time he did it I was prep'ed and zipping at the top end of third and RPM's high, and so when he popped the clutch again, I was already sitting on a "zoom!" point and other than a short burst of turbo assist acceleration, I pretty much held on - for a driver who's not really had a street racking history to speak of * grin *.

So I would have to be honest and say that his turbo would take me down driving my car, but let's just say that when it came to a longer streach further up the road where we were clear of any traffic, I think I easily found the top end of his power and I was still pulling away comfortably.. but who knows, he might have backed off - I might have pushed through his comfort zone on an open road ( I'd suspect that I was in credit on the drivers lisence points more than he might have been * grin * ).

But the funny thing was that regardles - every one of them driving with us was all smiles, happy waves goodbye as we parted ways as I headed accross the QLD / NSW border and they headed into what I assume was the Gold Coast.

I'd previously have written off street racers - my mistake - I'm all the more wiser now I suppose.

It's amazing how many Holden HSV drivers feel the need to race an RX8 on sight, I've had a coupel almost run into me as they scream up beside me and yell out "I'll race ya mate!" - where as RX3/7/8 drivers all seem pretty laid back and cool about the fact that the 8 is new, prolly a quicker stock drive, and all that jazz, and are "hip" enought to just smile and wave or comment at the lights with a "nice car" or "love your car"..

There's got to me an article in that somewhere ( perhaps one to pen later after some interviews with forum members * grin * ).

But frist I've got a zillion posts with questions from fixing paint chips from stones on the open road to getting stone chips pollished out of my windscreen [ have a tiny little dint right in my line of sight from a bloody horse float that kicked a fist size rock up at the car and the best I could do was line up with the windscreen thinking in the split second I had before it hit, that the windscreen would be easier and cheaper to replace than major body work and paint * sigh * ].

Many thanks to Hymee for whatever he did to reset my account too btw, was driving me crazy reading and not being able to reply.

Looking forward to a Sydney meet up soon hopefully too - and perhaps we should get a group drive together and have Canberra and Sydney folk drive north and Brisbane and Gold Coast folk drive south and meet at the pie shop in the middle for lunch and some f2f time?!

Nothing but grins and thumbs up from rotary drivers for me.

Have been almost sideswiped by a WRX driver trying to show off how smart she was.

Only had one smart *** Commodore driver so far... shame for him it was wet and I had traction control.

Let us know next time you're up... I'm sure a few of the locals would love to join you for a run up to Mt Glorious.

Get some tape on that stone chip.. the cleaner it is the better the fix.

Edit: I meant glass stone chip.

I've found the perfect cure to commuting boredom. No matter how far or near I roam, there is always something going on. I agree with the HSV factor - I think they seem committed to proving their 1.8 tonnes and 255 kw is a match for the 8. Funnily, on a straight road, they are a match but all i do is wait for a corner. I feel sorry for them (well almost) as they realise the HSVs handle like the Queen Mary. Of course, all this takes place at 49.99 km/h in the new NSW speed limit areas.

As for 8 owners, I never fail to get a wave and or a chat , and I have proof that the 8 can stop traffic when Dez and I stopped for a chat in peak hour traffic. Funnily we didn't get a horn I dont think.

Till next time
