Damn that sucks Good luck to Hammy...
i don't mean to offend any1 but I'd like to put my 2 cents in. Something like this was bound to happen. The 3 of them (Clarkson, May, & Hammond) love to go wild and over the top with their scripts as of late. This last season alone they burnt down a tent & RV trailer, Hammond raced that skydiver in a 2.5 ton, 512 bhp, Cayanne Turbo S on that rally road using high speed road tires, and Hammond (again) rolled that van in the "police stig vs. van chase." I confess I'm much like him, I'll try/dare anything at least once, and I doubt he would regret doing anything he has done, I'm just saying this doesnt come as a surprise.

The British public is questioning the needs of the TV presenter to engage in such a high risk stunt. It is known to be a requirement of modern television.
Reality TV show. Real life stunts. Myths busters... are the current favourites of UK TVs.

I can see why the British are questioning the 'stunt' - but its all part of television so its understandable. I dont buy the whole 'breaking the land speed record thing' though as most of the articles state that there was no official present to verify it.
Surely Top Gear producers would have known this too. Its probably an excuse they'er using to try and justify why such a high risk stunt took place.

Let's not get too clever with hindsight.
Accidents can happen any time you step into a car and it's only now that the 'public' is questioning what they got up to on that show.
Remember the electricity stunt? I thought that was way braver than charging down an airstrip in a straight line in a car that was presumably professionally built and prepared.
Let's get a few more facts before we pre-judge the whole thing.

I think the British public's reaction is part of the underlying 'political correctness' attitude that seems endemic in the UK, driven by, of all things, the tabloids -- which have successfully eliminated the concept of ethical behaviour from all that they do, but apply it rigorously in all other circumstances.
I could go on....but...groan!

I mean it could be very easy in a race, say the supercharged Landrover against the tank that Clarkson hit a tree. The winter Olympics race that May and Clarkson did with the 4WD and that can crash. There are so many thing that goes wrong. Long ride that we enjoy so much like DB9 VS train.... there are potential danger.
Needless to say, why break the land speed record - the Stig can do it.

Hammond’s Top Gear co-presenter Jeremy Clarkson visited him at the hospital yesterday, and told The Sun he had managed to provoke a reaction: “He was lying peacefully with a black eye but didn’t react so I tried something else. I said: ‘The reason you’re here is because you’re a crap driver’. He then smiled at me. It was an amazing moment, very moving.” He said Hammond’s only visible injury was a black eye and that he had no broken bones, adding that he was a “very lucky boy”.
