When i spoke to Archie from MAZFIX he told me he was organizing for the car to be Certified legal for road use by an Engineer , both in Queensland and for NSW as they have different regulations.

I know DBRX8 RIDE WAS GETTING A NEW STARTER AND BATTERY PUT IN BY MAZDA , and Archie was putting in a 7th injector for more fuel and increasing fuel pump capacity , but i havent heard any more since then , i may give Archie a call see whats happened .

Astro, RXVIII and I were talking to someone local about a kit for the 8 and if they were going to get it made legal. The guy basically laughed and said it will never happen. Of hand comments were that its like 6k per test and when they dont want you to pass, you're just pissing money away.

Dont get me wrong, it would be great if you could!

Cheers

I believe the main issue relates to the EPA compliance testing rather than engineering. That is it high cost of such one of testing & unlikelihood of it being given a “fair” review.

it can be made legal as in...
1. setup complies with local authorities (as in size, materials, workmanship)
2. passes EPA test (needs to past for 3 different type of gases....)
3. dB level

then a RTA certified engineer will be able to issue an Engineers Certificate and a copy sits with RTA.

you carry the original copy with you in the car, show it to the boys/girls in blue when pulled over..... and ask, let me know when i can go, thanks.

its how "good" your tuner is at the end of the day.... obviously you'd want at least 2 settings/programs (boosted and valet modes). valet mode being the "legal for testing" mode ;-).
it is the advantage for using an aftermatket stand alone ECU, but then again, it is illegal for road use.

you just cant have the pie and eat it.....

EDIT: or is it the CAKE...?

Thast NSW dude. In vic we have VicRoads!

From VicRoads VSI 208:

"Where it is intended to fit an engine which is significantly different from that offered by the manufacturer as original or an option, (e.g. four to six cylinder or six to eight cylinder), then an Approval certificate is required as evidence that the vehicle in its modified form is safe and meets all the applicable construction and emission regulations for that model. It is recommended that a VASS signatory is consulted before commencement of this type of modification."

That seems to be a very specific instance and more in the league of installing chevvy big block engines into minis than the addition of a turbocharger on to an existing engine..

I don't think thats the case.

they can't stop a car registered in NSW crossing the border (unless it is total unroadworthy and dangerous) nor can they fine a NSW driver for a mod that is legal in their state.
they can fine you if you live in vic and haven't transferred the rego over.

As I understand it, the engineering certificate arrangement is most strictly enforced in the case of engine swaps (eg, 20B in a 13B car) and, in the case of modern cars, around ADR compliance. It was explained to Revolver and me by the Rotor Master guys that a BIG issue in t/c'ing the Renesis is the requirement to modify one of the engine mounts to accommodate certain types/sizes of t/c's, and that this could represent a BIG issue in getting an engineer's certificate.

As to EPA testing, what EZZY said, although I would disagree with an earlier post suggesting implying this testing might be unfair. In fact, it is brutally "fair" your car either sits under the gas emission / noise thresholds, or it doesn't. Bit like breath testing

hence speaking to a certified engineer is very very important. most engineers will guide you step by step on what it has to be done so it can be engineered without problems (obviously tell him/her what you plans are first....)
it can be a very simple process, depending on how pro-active you are, wish i knew all these back in the early days

in NSW, your car will be sitting on a RTA dyno, hooked up with gas detecting pipes to your exhaust system (doesnt matter how many tips you have, they will have enough pipes to connect...), an EPA test will sit in your car, looking at the monitor in front, follow the "driving graph and drive it at different speed and rev range".
this will produce enough data to determine the 3 gases required to pass EPA, dB noise and anything "unusual" in the enigne bay
they will tell you soon enough if you pass or not. tell you the truth, not something you'd wnat to do often......

Interesting discussion, thanks guys and thanks Kall for getting it going.

Definitely something to look into in your own state before you bite the bullet and order one of these kits. I'm a bit too old to play hide and seek with illegal mods.

no need to talk - ill see you guys at the nats!!!

Archie is currently running my car in after the new bottom end re build and porting with new bigger apex seals.

The bigger fuel pump is in...but Archie still wants to go bigger as the engine is still thirsty!!! he says we can still do better.....

I'm flying up to brissy on saturday the 4th ..then joining the qld'ers for the drive down...

By the way,..anyone want to purchase my old (3month) extractors and stainless Ric Shaw exhaust??? $1200 ( i paid $2500) I will be bring them to the nats!!

God, I hope I will be able to drive it as well... I spose I will have to learn how to ride the throttle and not be peddle to the metal at all times..it will be strange

finally the car will be raod worth in QLD and NSW... Archie has taken care of it..
See you all soon
db

Michael,

If you bring your money to the meet point, dbRx8 can hand over the parts and your lift can take them home for you the same day. It will give dbRx8 some extra room in his car for fuel drums etc..

Adrian

Changing of Mods like these are definetely best without D" wifes knowledge

Shes already not to happy that i am extending my trip to Melbourne for a further 10 days after the Nats, let alone me getting new goodies for the car , if i do get the mods it will have to be by stealth .
