using Shell Helix Ultra... HELP!!!
Hi,
Does anyone have any thoughts or has used Shell Helix Ultra in their RX8?
Reason why I'm asking is that the Mazda stuff is too hard to get. The local Mazda dealers always seem to be out of the stuff. I'm jack of ringing up and asking for it, then turning up and them saying there's a batch on it's way... it'll be 15mins.
I'm thinking the shell stuff because I have a shell card so I can buy it on that. Plus every shell service station will have it, should I get caught out.
I've searched on this forum and have only found threads that say you should only use mineral oils for "pre-renesis" rotaries. But I have not found anything including the manual that says you can't or should not use synthetic oils in the Renesis.
anyone??

Oh gosh, we've done this to death. The answer is you can use synth oils with the Renesis if you so choose, but the overwhelming opinion is to use a mineral oil such as the Mazda oil, Penrite or Valvoline.
Yes, availability is an issue but (a) your Mazda dealer should be using the Mazda oil at the scheduled services and (b) you shouldn't need much more than a litre or so between services unless you are doing track work or long distance, high speed driving.
Elsewhere it has been described how a litre bottle fits nicely in the small compartment leading into the boot from the rear seats, and how 'nice' Mazda dealers have been known to give a litre of the oil to their customers.
IMHO, Shell products are not the best... but that is just MHO

Greetings All,
Well it may have been done to death but that doesn't stop the misinformation given to the humble customer....
Needing oil over Easter and being unable to get any of the magic Mazda genuine stuff (dealer was closed) I had to get *something* and that something turned out to be Pennzoil 5W-30 which is *gasp* SEMI SYNTHETIC.
So in it went at 9,000 kms and no doubt got changed as part of the 4.7 litres (ha ha !) that they put in (and therefore also remove first) at the 10,000 service.
When I mentioned to Nick the service guy recently that I had to top up the oil he said to me 'You didn't use synthetic oil did you ?'
I said that I thought it was SEMI synthetic and he then said 'Only MINERAL oil is supposed to be used' He was adamant about it. So I said that was a bit hard when your dealer was closed for the weekend and I had to get *something*.
Now I couldn't find anything in the book that says you *can't* use semi synthetic oil (feel freel to correct me there :-) and they certainly didn't tell me that when I called Mazda (Un) Assist about it before I bought the Pennzoil.
As I said before - I'm sure I can't be the only one getting REALLY tired of all the misinformation flying around about the RX-8
So anyway, enjoy the rest fo your weekend wherever you are- I will - even looking at our RX-8 makes me happy !
Regards
Jeffneil

Sniff! I tried to consolidate all the information on this issue in a concise couple of paragraphs, and then you guys have thrown confusion all over it.
I stand by what I wrote as the current state of play!

Well, I thought what I wrote was pretty clear!
However, before the Mazda oil was available, my dealer was using Mobil1 5W-30
But I will always use the Mazda oil provided I can get it.
