OK, that'll do for the Top Gun quotes.....
I missed that piece on the TV the other night, but I was there when they filmed it, so I have a good idea what it was about.
I've settled into the Territory now. Been in Darwin for the last couple of days. I don't have broadband internet up here though, which is why y'all haven't heard much out of me for a while.
Yes the '8 didn't like the heat on the drive up here. At 38-40deg outside air temp, I couldn't go any faster than 150 without overheating. The car even boiled and spat coolant all over the engine bay twice. I hear that PWR make a bigger radiator for the RX-8 and have sold quite a few to the US, so I will have to invest in one of them before I can really make the most of the unlimited speed limits up here.
Fuel economy is the other shitty thing I discovered on the drive. At 150km/h sustained, the car runs at around 0.80 Lambda and I was getting 16+L/100km. So some of the time gained is lost in all the extra refuelling stops!
Perhaps this type of driving is suited to a different kind of 8...... a V8.

By the sounds of things you car is running in extreme conditions with the danger of a cooked engine. A larger radiator would be a wise move. If this does not work then you may need ro resort to fancy water sprays, etc to keep things cool.
If the car can survive the ultimate torture in these conditions then it will be a good sign for the reliability of the Hymee supercharger.
Good luck and I hope you manage to iorn these bugs out.

So, the car over heated without the supercharger. This shows that the cooling system is inadequate for these driving conditions.

I was interested in that comment by Wildcard, too.
I have certainly driven mine quite a bit on reasonably long hauls in 36C+ heat....but not at those speeds
...more 120 cruise... and not noticed any overheating problems. A/C was running flat out, too. Mind you, I didn't have sCANalyser connected at the time to monitor actual temps....

When you think about it though, there are very few places in the world where you can legally run any car at 150km/h plus for extended periods in extreme heat so I think it's tough to criticise Mazda for not engineering against every eventuality and instance of use. As a business case it would hardly be their top priority.
I think for too long we've gotten used to the idea that our cars are perfect appliances that will do anything and everything. Perhaps the budget and weight diverted away from engineering high speed death valley marathons was spent on that sweet handling we all enjoy?
