Window Tinting
Hi all
I'm looking to getting my windows tinted.
I've found
Tint Professor Premium 1 - lifetime warranty for purchaser only $265
Tint a Car Formula 1 - 25yr warranty $425 ($370 for RACV member)
Tint a Car Midnight express - lifetime warranty for purchaser only $395 ($320 for RACV member)
I am not sure who to go with.
Metalised/metallic tint on AM radio reception
Also, the issue of AM radio interference from metalised tint film in the back window. There seems to be mixed reports about this. From a search of window tinting, many have gone non-metallised so the question isn't answered. Most posts are several years old. So, an update on this issue seems needed. Has anyone had problems with metallised tints and radio reception?
Tintacar would be putting a non-metallised tint on the back window. If I am paying $$$ for the U beut metalised tint, it doesn't seem right that a non-metallised tint goes on the window that gets the most sunlight.
Has anyone had experiences with either companies?
Recommendations and suggestions welcomed.

My car came with tints but I don't know whether they're metallic or not. Also I don't know whether there's any effect on radio reception as I don't have a non-tinted car to compare it with. It does get fuzzy at times around the city but what car doesn't?
Reading that back I realise it contributes nothing to your question!
If you value a cool car more than a crystal clear radio then go metallic I reckon - I listen to music via my ipod mostly so it's not an issue.

Er, are those prices quoted for the "metallic" tint?
Ive been going around to local shops around here and no one has offered to charge me more than 175 for full tint all around.
I think you're paying too much unless you're getting some sort of special material.
EDIT: Oh my, im very sorry. I just realized this was posted in the australian forums. I didnt realize this was in australian currency.

I did my tints at Instant Windscreens.
I looked around before hand and was getting quotes anywhere between $230-$290.
Cost me $270 for 35% tints. Lifetime Warrenty.
I wouldn't pay more than $300. Anymore for tints is outrageous IMO.
I got the Premium (metallised) film. Not only is it great for solar heat, UV and Glare control, I also think the reflective metalic finish works really well with the titanium colour of my car.
PS: Metalic tints all the way around. No problems with Radio Reception what so ever.

you can get that tint professor for 250, I think I have that "refer a friend" form somewhere (I got mine done there via a friend as well). I'll see if I can find it.

Metallic Tint will interfere with in car (as in receiver/antenna is in the car) GPS reception. If you have an external antenna then no hassle. I can see no reason for metalic tint to interfere with radio reception as the aerial is outside the car.
I will PM you details of a guy I know that does tinting.
Cheers

I have to disagree with you auzoom. I have metalic tint all round highly reflective silver and no worries at all with the radio?? I don't know if it makes a difference what type of tint film but mine is very reflective and it didn't cost me more than $180 I arranged for a cash job and cut a deal with a place here in Adelaide. Remember Timbervolt you have smaller windows than a 6 so why pay the same $$$.?? No if it were me I would get what you like but don't pay too much it's all margin anyways. There are only a few types of film and then they are re-branded. My advice would be stick with a smaller place they tend to do a better job.
It makes a huge difference in the look and the temp inside the car.
Good luck and post pics when you get it done!

No Problem Julia, anyone and everyone is welcome to disagree with me only problem is that I think we just agreed. I dont see metalic tinting interfering with anything that is outside the car (such as our radio aerial).

yes, Gomez, we are all sorry that we forgot to search and find your posts about where there antenna is and went impromptu. That aside, it makes n real difference as the tinting is put on _behind_ the antenna (hopefully )

Hey Auzoom we agreed I think on different things. The aerial is stuck on the glass inside the car and then the tint goes over the top. But then the aerial is the first thing other than the glass when facing out....are we on the same wavelength?? LOL at the end of the day it looks nice and keeps the car cool......it's a no brainer really...if you want it get it and don't pay too much

A thin metallic element covered by a massive sheet of metalised tint....it's more or less assured that long range rx will be adversely affected.
That said...it's not my money, Ralph.

For those that are still confused, from the following actual explaination its actually reflection onto the antenna of unwanted signals thats the problem https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...41&postcount=3

I felt really stupid for a second, until he explained that the metal tints (all of them) will reflect "free" energy through the antenna, causing interference with *certain* bands of AM. So, if driving under a power transmission line, you may experience interference (on certain AM stations) for a couple of seconds, until you are clear of the energy.
I had him install the most expensive metallic tint he had (sorry, don't know if it was double or single metal). I do listen to talk radio (AM band) a lot, and have only noticed the interference on ONE occasion, and the tint has been on for 5 weeks.
