You can have a lot of fun with a modded first gen MX5. There is so much aftermarket stuff available and it's pretty cheap. There are quite a few NA's running around with 100kw to the wheels which in a sub 1000kg car is pretty fun. A good choice for someone wanting to build a cheap track car!

Interestingly Stu, my fastest lap was lap number...1. So as Taka said I wasted 51 laps of petrol, tyres and brakes :-( I was a little disappointed in no timers for the morning.

That's annoying! At least next time you know to just do the first lap then pull into the pits and call it a day

But hey if you had of done that then we all would not have got to seen your wonderfull display of skid control

Now I am with you what you think.

I agree modding a 1st gen MX-5 is cheap and you can have full mod and running it cheaply. And you can walk away from a stacked one with no hard feelings.

This agrument raised when I rode my road bicycle at a race meet. Someone asked why the A grade riders race their Colnago C50s which cost $11000 each, and they do not have a fat bank account or even a car? What happen when you fell off and dint it! Well, you just do it for the fun you are getting - the admire that you are receiving and the pure pleasure you get out of it. I am happy with my 2nd generation Specialied . It is all in someone's perspective. .

I also agree with your point Revolver and it is up to each of us on the day how much they want to risk by how hard they drive. I generally hold back some and never drive on my limit. I still have just as much fun. On some corners where there are no walls I might try a little harder a few times but anywhere there is walls I always hold back a little to keep a margin of error. I would not be willing to do it if I had to push at 100%, just would no be comfortable doing that.

Judging on the some of the cruises... this is very hard to understand.

I suppose you take out the comprehensive insurance just for this.....

Not 100% sure what you mean Taka. On the cruises I am not too worried as my insurance covers me out on the road, on the track I always just hold back a little because of the whole insurance issue and that fear of doing something real wrong out there and destroying the car. The fear is not enough to stop getting out there and having fun but it is enough for me to have a little caution.

As my confidence and driving skill increases no doubt I will get quicker and push a little harder out on track but at present I still feel I am lacking the skill needed to push really hard. For me this is one of the main reasons for the skidpan days we have done and for more I will organise throughout this year. These should help to build my confidence and more importantly my skill level.

Now for he good news... I just ordered a new catback exhaust for my Tub from Brian Goodwin in the states. Should sound a lot better out on track next time.

Also found out the newly designed replacement bushes for my front Swaybar are also in the mail heading to me. Will be able to put the front bar back in and dial out that oversteer. On the semi's it was not too bad but back on the stock tyres it is pretty tail happy!

Not sure why you can push near the limit on the road but not on the track.

Yes insurance cover you but if you hurt the structure of the car - even if it is repaired; it will never be the same.

So if I crash anywhere I will sell the car; just happen is that the wall is further away on the track and there is a sand trap in between.

For your reference:

I am 6/10 on the cruises, and 9/10 on track.

I just don't understand when I see when someone scared to be on the track and driving 9/10 on the road.

That is all.

Oh BTW Stu, look at this. Yum

That looks really nice. probably not cheap. I am very happy though with my AEM. Works and sounds really nice, but that one just looks so sexy!

I think it has something to do with the much greater speed on track. I don't think I have ever driven stupidly on the road, made 1 or 2 errors but because I was not going 100% avoided any trouble. I am getting quicker on the track and more comfortable.

Don't worry mate I will get fast enough to give you a run for your money on track. Keep looking in your mirrors I am coming

Only if I get to be the meat in the sandwich ;-)

Onto a more serious note...are people interested in either another winton day or a Calder park day? If so give me a time frame and I will start working on it. I am having organisation Withdrawls.

I am not really fussed which one. I'll happily go to either, although I will put my vote in for Calder simply for the fact it is a different track again and easy to get to. Try out the different tracks and see which ones we like and don' like.

As of date again I am easy as to what you or the others prefer. Just not May 17 which is the Sandown day. Give me a date and I'll be there!

I think we now understand each other.

The bicycle analogy is not really a good one because even though it is a VERY expensive pushie, it's still only $10-12K - not $50-60K - that you're risking. Plus, racing bike components are very interchangeable and can be used to build up the next bike if the frame is wrecked.

Having said all that, I respect the right of people to push their expensive toys hard. We've all seen Porka and Fazza drivers giving their cars heaps in a non-insurance track situation. It's just all a matter of what you're personally comfortable with.

I agree that 9 or 10/10's on the road is crazy. I always hold back to 7-8/10's and less in crowded cruise situations. Just because you're insured doesn't mean you should gamble with the lives of other roadusers.

The track is where you should be pushing hard but you've got to be prepared to cop a writeoff if it happens.

I am getting ready for the video of a lap in Winton... I wish I could get Glen's lap coz it will be more representative.

I believe Tim and Andrew have a lot of footage and I wonder how they were going with theirs

I have a heap of footage but since I had the slowest time and therefore most likely the worst line......is it worth showing???. I got some interesting footage from the front car cam but not at hi speed, still I'll get that up as quick as I can. Astro might have a faster lap - and Taka, definately yours will be the fastest shot on video..... Perhaps I'll put mine up to show where not to go?

Hi Guys.

Just wondering how those "not so serious" drivers went with wear and tear on your tyres, brakes etc? After reading about the tyre and brake rotor wear some of you "faster" guys experienced, the cost of a day on the track must start to add up. All realative to the amount of fun you have of course.

Being a novice, I drove within my limits at Wakefield last year and no doubt next time I go on the track will do the same. As a result, I had minor wear on brakes and tyres.

Greg
