DVD Navigation System

DVD Navigation System is equipped with a 7-inch LCD screen with DVD-ROM disk navigation. The system has CD player and audiocassette deck functions and a DVD navigation system integrated into the head unit.

I'm glad the screen is 7 inches and not one of those dinky, unreadable screens found on some cars. Any word on if it is 3D or not?

Does non-Nav system have CD?

I'm confused about something. I was looking at page 83 of the press kit where it discusses the Navigation system and the standard and premium audio systems. The DVD navigation system "has CD player and audiocassette deck functions and a DVD navigation system integrated into the head unit"

Fine, the Nav system has CD capability. However on the same page the discussion of the Standard Audio System has "AM/FM digital tuner and " stuff about speakers. No mention of a CD player. The premium audio system adds the BOSE speakers and AUDIOPILOT. Again, no mention of a CD player.

So, I currently don't have the Navigation system in my pre-order. Does the premium system have CD? how many disks?

I can't believe all don't have CD.

When I added navagation + the Harmon Kardon premium stereo to my 2002 325i, they took away the in dash CD player!

I had to get the 6 disc changer to listen to CDs. (mounted in trunck)

You mean that the nav drive is in the head unit itself?

That means that there will be no way to keep the stock NAV if you replace the head unit. Shoot...

I read the same stuff. The pictures in the press kit show a 6 CD changer in the dash for an audio system (I don't know if they were the bose system or not). What I wonder about is wether or not the changer goes when you add the NAV system. I also wonder where the tape slot goes on the dash layout that is in all the pics. I guess I will just have to wait and see what comes in June.

I just want a 6 CD indash changer. Even the Millenia has one with the upgraded systems, so I don't see any reason why we wouldn't here.

We are 99.9% sure that the NAV will not keep you from getting the in dash CD changer. Normally, NAV systems have a separate drive for the NAV system, and it only plays the NAV DVDs programmed for that unit (in other words, no DVD movies from that player or anything).

The tape slot (or MD slot) goes in that "blank" area in the lower half of the unit, under the buttons/*****.

The press kit (link elsewhere in the RX8 forum) shows what I think is the premium sound system (can't see bose logo) with the words "6-DISC IN DASH))))))" just to the right and below the LOAD button. This is also the picture with the NAV system up. The other must be the standard audio since it does not show the "6-DISC ..."

Their are many unknowns though. The picture with the "6-DISC ..." is a Japanese car (steering wheel on right) and nav has Kanji, I think, shown . The one without is a US car (Steering on left). Both systems have a "DISC ^" & "DISC V" buttons for the button 1 and 2 functions.

Lastly can anybody read the writing on the photo below. It is from the press kit photos. It is a control panel just aft of the automatic gear shift lever.

Thanks,

I can't read kanji, but I can read hiragana and katakana. The left-top and left-bottom buttons reads "menu" and "mode", respectively.

What buttons say

I can't read Japanese but I can read Chinese. The top right button says "current location." The two buttons below say "detail" and "wide view" . basically zoom in and zoom out.

hope that helps

I emailed Mazda and they said that the 6-CD changer is an option that you may be able to purchase. It is not available to purchase now but should be available when the cars hit the market. They also said that the NAV had no effect on the Premium Audio System. I guess the Premium system doesn't add a CD changer as I thought. I will survive, you can only play one disc at a time anyway.

So there's only a single CD, even with premium audio?

Here is what I got back from Mazda,

Thank you for contacting Mazda North American Operations. I appreciate
the opportunity to respond to you.

The Bose Premium Sound System comes with a single compact disc player. You may be able to order the 6 CD changer as an accessories. The 6 CD changer is not available to order at this time, but should be available once the RX-8 is out on the market. The Navigational System should not have any effect on the Bose Premium Sound System.

The first production of Mazda RX-8 should be around May or June of 2003. These vehicles should be delivered to dealership from June to August of 2003.
_______________
I also asked when production would start and that was their responce. I am assuming they are replying to when production cars come off the line but I don't know for sure. I have replied to Mazda and requested more info on the audio options so I will post the reply when it comes in.

I got a reply back from Mazda saying he was mistaken the Premium system does have a 6 Disc changer. He is working on getting me the full details of the different systems but that won't be till next week.

Sorry for the confusion.

I can't remember where I read it, but the DVD for the Nav is separate from the audio CD player and is located somewhere in the rear of the car. I think it was in the rear center console but I'm not sure.

Apparently this is correct, one of the earlier threads mentioned that the NAV DVD player would be located somewhere in the rear of the car in the centre tunnel housing.
