*OFFICIAL* GTA Dyno/Cobb Tune Day

Details:

DATE: Sept 13, 8:30am to 6:00pm (we will get everyone in, even if it goes past 6pm but we want to start at 8:30am SHARP).

PLACE: Splitfire Performance, Brampton, 220 Rutherford Rd South. Has room for lot's of space for many cars to hang out and quiet streets for runs

DYNO: In ground. Very new model with the latest software (224 Dyno Jet)

TUNER: MazdaManiac (Jeff) is flying in for the event. For those that do not know, Jeff is the leading "custom map maker" for Cobb AccessPort. When he does a tuning session, your car goes on the dyno for 2or 3 runs while he dials it in with a custom map for your car. If you bought the Cobb AccessPort from him, you do not have to pay for his time to tune. If you did not purchase the Cobb from him and you want a tune, there will be an additional cost (work that out with Jeff directly).

TOTAL COSTS: The cost for the facility is $1000 and Jeff's travel costs will be about $1000. Jeff's travel costs will be firmed up as soon as the GI guys re-affirm their interest in the event. Jeff's costs will be divided equally between all of those getting a tune from him. Facility costs will be divided by all those getting a dyno that day. Only other thing is food and drinks. I would suggest we create a community pot for this.

GOALS: (1) Get 10 signed up for Dyno + Tune (2) Get 4 signed up for Dyno only

PROJECTED COSTS PER PERSON: If we hit our goals and Jeff's travel costs come in at $1000, costs per person break out as follows:

Dyno + tiune: $172
Dyno only: $72

Thumbs up Comments on the AccessPort

I'd just like to add a comment about the AccessPort for those contemplating this or for those on the fence.

My experience with this can be characterized in general as very good.
Perhaps a bit more responsive to the throttle, particularly in the lower rpm range.
General improvement to fuel mileage, I would have bought it for this alone had I felt it was going to be this good. Who wouldn't like that with fuel prices where they are now or where they are going.

Generally I get around an extra 50-80 km per tankful. When I first got the car in 04, during the breaking period (under 4K rpm driving) I felt good if I could hit 400km to the low fuel light. After that is slowly worked it's way down to a maximum of 350km before the light....driving a bit more normally.
Since getting the AP, 400km's to the low fuel light is typical, this adds up to a free tankful every 5-6 weeks, I've seen as much as 460km to the low fuel light which would get me well over the 500km per tankful easily. I look forward to seeing what I can reach on a long distance all highway trip.

All that being said I've been trying to get to any one of the MazdaManiac's dyno tune meets since receiving mine, none have been this close, The nearest was the Chicago one but that would have cost about $1k to do, between Dyno, hotels, food and fuel costs on top of an 7+ hour drive each way, but I still debated about it.

All that said I look forward to seeing what a Dyno tune by MM will give me in addition to what I seen already on the off the shelf tunes.
Don't let the opportunity go by, who knows how long you will have to wait again for this of happen so close to home.

This is the first Canadian MM Dyno tune, lets make it one to remember.

^ Well said RotorWheee.

Just to add to your comment, another local member (WCS) made it out to the Chicago meet and had this to say in response to my question about whether the Cobb tune made a real difference...

"oh yeah... responsive and power all the way through the range... I would even hazard to say that I can feel more low end power..... but above 4.5k rpm it's quite noticable"

My own experience with the Cobb has been a very positive one. I find that everything is a lot smoother. And now that I have added a mid-pipe, I'm looking to push it even further with a more aggressive tune. Can't wait

I believe that RW is correct when he says that this is the first Canadian Dyno day. Let's show those Americans that we know how to do it right!!!

Does anybody have any suggestions for things that you might want as an overlay to the day? For example...

> I could probably arrange to get a sprint booster from JRP for you guys to try. It's a simple 2 minute plug-in.

> Interior LED lights group buy/install

> Clear corners group buy/ install

Ideas???

From what I have read, you should get at least +10HP gain but this could be bumped further with a custom map. Here are a couple of quotes from the Cobb thread that I found interesting...

"Easy E beat me to the punch regarding the accessport. I am in the process of pulling some video of the operation of the AP to post up since I've seen nothing with the AP in action on the dyno.

MazdaManiac has my dyno results and I've left it up to him to post the results because he was the one supporting the dyno time and tuning. I will say that we performed a baseline tune and then used one of Mazdamaniac's generated maps that worked with my trims.

We ran an initial run with the stock programming, but the final OEM flash run we did as a baseline was more accurate to the car's true power.

Baseline run yielded approx 183 WHP. A pre-made tune yielded approx 194 to 195 WHP. This was at about 75 to 80 degrees F.

There's clearly room to go because there's additional specialized tuning that could be done on the car to yield more power. Still, for a pre-generated tune I was impressed. Mods on my car are the K&N Type 2, Cat back and test pipe, AP pulley, lightweight alternator and water pump pulleys.

This is certainly a device that NA people should look into. The ability to have your OMP kicked up a notch, adjust fan settings, kill CEL's and also the tuning is well worth the money. Ditch your CAT and you'll open up some opportunities for power."

"We dyno'ed three cars yesterday. Flashwing's, mine and MM's. I don't have any of the charts. MM will have to post those. But from what I saw with the Cobb AP is an infinite ability to tune your car. MM said he has over 500 maps already. And I can picture having 10 to 20 per car or more.

The main thing is every car is different. Be it the car, the mods, the weather the altitude. What Cobb has done is provided a way to tune your car perfectly for your conditions. You can adjust AFR's every 100 RPM's if you want. Same with engine timing. Watching that on the dyno graphs yesterday made me a believer in what a fantastic unit the AP really is."

Have you made arrangements Jeff? Are you heading back Sunday? Have you picked a place to stay?

Hopefully we'll all have time to harass you throughout the day about your upcoming projects (turbo kit) as well as pick your brain on various topics (ape living conditions in the Congo.)

Will you be around for dinner afterwards? We can all hit a restaurant. I don't think there's anything particularly awesome in Brampton but we can cruise to Dave & Busters or something.

You can learn a bit out SprintBooster here.

I "trialed" it for about 3 weeks, using it off an on to note differences. In the end, I decided to return it (30 day trial period from JRP). Despite my decision to return it, I think that some people will love its impact. It gives the sense that your car is faster and more responsive. I liked that part of it a lot. However, I found that there was tad too much of a negative impact on drive-ability on a day in and day out basis.

Removing the hyperbole from the equation, all it essentially does is alter the number of volts that are sent to the ECU as you press the gas down. Our cars provide to the ECU anywhere from 1 to 5 volts as I understand it. It's a gradual increase, directly related to how much you step on the pedal. The SB, alters this rate, so that you start at a higher voltage and move up the ramp faster.

It would be fun to see how different people react to it in their cars. I could probably convince JRP to loan us one or two for the day if you guys are interested.

In terms of the group by stuff, kinda hoping that Jay will step up on that given that he has already looked into it. Jay?

Great ideas Eric, especially the conversation about the Ape living I know that Jeff hasn't firmed up plans yet, he has only set the time aside. We wanted to get enough guys signed up before he makes reservations, etc..
