I have had my car a week and have 1600 km on the odometer. My results after 5 fill-ups are as follows:

1) 355km, 45.6L, 12.8L/100km, 18.2 mpg (U.S.), 21.9 mpg (IMP)
2) 193km, 25.6L, 13.3L/100km, 17.6 mpg (U.S.), 21.2 mpg (IMP)
3) 316km, 40.6L. 12.8L/100km, 18.2 mpg (U.S.), 21.9 mpg (IMP)
4) 365km, 50.3L, 13.8L/100km, 17.0 mpg (U.S.), 20.5 mpg (IMP)
5) 358km, 48.6L, 13.6L/100km, 17.3 mpg (U.S.), 20.8 mpg (IMP)

All of the figures represent combined mileage, and I would estimate the breakdown (in terms of kms) to be about 50/50 town versus highway.

I almost NEVER make any shift below 5000 RPM (lets face it, the engine is very relaxed at that RPM), but conversely I rarely take it much above 6000 RPM in daily driving. The last couple of mileage results have probably suffered due to the fact that as the car passed the 1000 km mark I made a few 0-60 runs, and a few more full throttle accelerations.

I honestly believe that one can get decent (around the 12L/100km range combined) if one keeps the shifts below that 6250 RPM and one doesn't go too deep into the throttle every time one accelerates.

My last fill-up (last night) was a real winner though: the gas station was out of "regular" gas, so they were selling premium at the "regular" price, 76.9 cents/L.. WOOHOO! :D

Cool Mileage.....

Well, I seem to be doing a little better than most, (or driving much slower!) I have just passed 4000k, and am now getting 23 mpg, plus or minus a little, (22.6/23.2, mostly highway) for the last eight fillups, all premium.

My light seems to come on exactly at the '50 litres fill' point.
I fill just till the pump clicks off every time then drive till the light shows, and find a gas station. It makes it real easy to calculate if the refill is always about 50 litres!

You may be the only one who has even come close to breaking the 10 L/100km (4000km with 8*50L). Just would like to remind everybody that the TC published numbers are 9.2 hwy and 12.8 city. The next best number was from Wing with 11.5 for highway.

This has become my biggest concern for this car. It's not the money, it's the principle. Most are getting above the 12.8 L estimated for city when driving on the highway.

WOW 23MPG? That's US gallon right? If so that's good!

My best number is 10.6L/100Km all highway, which is still aways from the 9.2 you should get.

Since noone seems to have compared this with the 7, here goes...

My 1st gen (12A, normaly aspirated, carb) did about 24-28 mpg (imperial).
Turbo II (13B) does 18-20, except for short runs (runs rich when cold) when it's noticably worse.
FDs seem to do about 18 on a good day, unless they've been played with, when they can be as bad as 12mpg (but considerably more than the 280 bhp!)

With my turbo II, driving style doesn't seem to make much difference, and neither does speed. I think the rotary is more efficient at higher RPM, although I've not seen any proof of this.

Maybe the ECU is running a richer map as part of a run-in procedure? or maybe Mazda have decided to set the map rich at the high end for reliability - but these numbers don't look as good as I'd expect...

Yesterday I phoned my dealer to schedule a "fuel consumption test"; someone phoned me today to tell me that Mazda Canada refuse to do any kind of testing during the "break in period"... which is 10 000 km

Since I only have 3000 km I won't reach that number before the "buyback limit"!!! They told me that my consumption should "greatly" improve after that.

I said "Great, can you put it in writing specifying that if I doesn't improve, they will buy back the car... " Oups... sorry they can't do that, finally they gave me the phone number of MCS (Mazda Customer service)... same answer..

So is the famous "run rich, reduce power after 6250rpm" number = 10 000 km

Oh... forgot to mention on my previous post that the lady at MCS explained to me how to reproduce the test they use to determine fuel consumption and that way see if my car is ok or close to it!

City driving: drive your car at a constant speed of 33km/h
Hway driving: drive your car at a constant speed of 77km/h

Yeah... that's my kind of driving.

Yup, drive at 33, you'll get stopped for blocking traffic!

That's not how they do the test, they AVERAGE 33km/h with like a 10 Km trip with 5 stop signs or something like that.

The highway is about right though 77Km/h.

The issue is though, that they test EVERY car like this, yet I can blow away EPA on other cars, but not the RX8

Ok here's my latest, I didn't drain the tank because gas was only 65.6 today! So I filled up, incase it goes up!

Anyway 320.9Km with 41.158L (accurate enough for ya? )

12.8L / 100Km (18.38US MPG / 22 MPIG)

This was ALL city driving, and at least twice a day I redlined the car in first and second. Yesterday I even bounced of the rev limiter a few times. That was cool, because the car doesn't just loose power like some it just bounces off of it.

Wow... if my fuel consumption was like yours, I would for sure keep my 8! but at 18L/100 mixed driving... I don't think I'll keep my car.

Might come back to the 8... next spring maybe, when some drivers have reach the 10000km mark and confirm that the consumption is a lot better.

You're lucky to get that kind of milleage, but since Mazda doesn't want to test my car, I have no other choice I guess...

I know we've said that many times but Wing and myself are getting very similar mileage on our respective red, GS, 6M car !!

Guess we are easy on the throttle or we got the best cars... :-)

my last tamk was 14,6 but i drove it kinda hard just to see how bad it would get...

About time! :D

Seriously, next tank of gas, I'm turning off the DSC.
Sometime next week I should see if that helps any.

Hmm, 10k. I can't see me making it to that this year.
Although I am planning a trip up to Ontario the end of the month...

Unhappy

I have close to 2000 Km on mine (6speeds , red GT) . So far I kept all my gaz receipt but haven t really ad them up to see what kind of consumption I ended up with from the very beginning.

I did 250 Km of highway back and forth last friday, most of it in 6th gear, for wich I immediatly figured my consumption. I didn t take it easy at all, I even reached 230 km per hour at one point on my initial 250 km. I averaged 12.2L on that initial 250 km A/c was on.

On the way back a/c was off, the two windows were rolled down and the moon roof was opened; I averaged 11.7 L/ km.

It' s not great but it is quite surprising when I read the few horror stories here.

TT2 i wonder.... do you rev it up at 7k everytime you shift?? Or maybe you are in the city ALL the time? Québec city doesn't have that many traffic jams... :-)

Hi f1...

I usually shift between 5 and 7k (below that, there is no accelaration ); My driving is at least 50/50 hway/city... sometimes even more hway.

Here is a typical day to day ride: Home to hway = 2.5km, Hway to exit office = 13km, Exit to office = 2 km). Last week I drove this ride 10 times (2 x 5 days)= 175km, about 60km Hway (driving to different dealers to test drive other cars... don't know yet if I'll keep my 8)... and less than 40km city driving... result: my wonderful 18.88L/100!

The same kind of driving with my TT always average between 11.7 and 12.2km/100; I was close to redline most of the time with my TT shifting 1-2-3; to get the power out of the Rx-8 you need to rev it a bit; and we must remember that 6000rpm is only 2000 "rotor" rpm... which doesn't seems that must to me ?!?

I sure would love to drive side by side for 100-150km with Wing and see the kind of consumption I would get compare to his.

This week-end I filled up with regular fuel... so far, 112km and the needle is between the half and 3/4 mark... seems to be about the same...

Even if I don't drive that must (20 000km/year) that's close to 100$/month more than the TT... 200$ of hard earn money before taxes ... that's the reason why I'm still unsure if I'll keep the car

You drive it normal to hard which is fine and fun. I drive way more conservatively since my point record with the police isn't that good. :-) If i ever go to Québec city anytime soon i'll let you know and well follow each other for 100K or so just to se...
