Well it happened to me for the first time yesterday, the 8 let me down. I have had the car 2.5 years and put on over 105,00km without every having a flooding or hard start issue.

I move it small distances (garage to driveway) all the time, but usually rev it up before turning off the ignition and letting it spool down while off. Never a problem.

I moved the car into the garage to take my truck on Friday and did the same thing. I got in Saturday morning and the car was totally flooded. Today I pulled the plugs, the fuel pump fuse and tried to drive out the fuel on the starter. I then dried out the plugs and put everything together and it was still flooded.

Now I have to get it towed tomorrow morning to Dave Wood Mazda. I usually go to Dufferin but I live in Stouffville so that is too far to tow.

I'm sad because now our relationship has a trust issue.

I'm sure I don't need to remind you of the flood procedure described in the manual.

Everyone experiences a flooding now and again.
Especially if you're going to move the car short distances.

No worries...

 

I went through all the procedures but no luck. Today the flatbed picked her up outside my driveway and took her away. Actually I was luck the mazdaspeed suspension doesn't lower the car anymore than it already does. The front of the bumper scraped a bit on the flatbed even as itw as being dragged up.

 

My car didn't start on friday. Today is monday, so I'm wondering if she is flooded and I'll have to have her towed all the way back to Edmonton. That would suck

 

I'm so flood averse I hand roll my '8 out of the garage when cold to wash it. I then let it idle for five minutes while I'm drying it off before backing in (too much incline to push it in, or I would!).

 

damn, sorry to hear that dude.... that happened to me twice but both times my car was at the shop and they weren't too familiar with the rotaries so they flooded the car...

thank god my good friend walked me through the procedure over the phone, he's a master Mazda tech... appreantly you gotta unplug the AIR PUMP sensor and crank the crap outta the car... it worked both times~

As for your questions Leesha I have an '06 and never had a flooding issue(knock on wood) I understand that the '06 and up are less prone to these issues but since it is still a rotary engine flooding can still occur

Every single rotary has chances to flood... depends on the driver/owner most likely...

If the car is always warmed-up before shut off u'd have less chance to have the car flooded...

 

If it hasn't happen to you yet, it will eventually. As far as I'm concerned you're not even a real rotary owner until you've flooded the engine.

 

So I am down $350 now for new plugs, ECU reflash, and oil change (fuel int he oil). But I can pick up my car tonight at least.

Rockstar I didn't know you had to unplug the Air Pump Sensor before cranking the **** out of it. In only unplugged the fuel pump and pulled the plugs. What does the air pump portion accomplish?

 

Happened to me a few months ago. I got careless and lazy when quickly moving the car shut it off before it warmed up.

Bad part for me was that when I got it towed to the dealership to have it fixed, the starter went while they were trying to fix it. They were completing the repair and testing when it failed.

 

Won't Push Starting it and popping the clutch work, everybody raves about that technique and says it work every time, but I have yet flooded my car=)...

 

That will work if the car is dry and won't start, under certain conditions. The problem when the car is flooded is that the rotor chambers are full of fuel and the plugs are so wet they can't get a spark going. So if you push start and pop the clutch all you will do is spin the wet motor in gear, but the plugs still can' ignite the motor so it still won't run.

 

But didn't you say that you dried out your plugs already?

 

Did you pull the plugs and everything including that?
I've never heard of doing this but it sounds plausible.
Anyone else have to do this?

 

And from now on do this. Works everytime, for me at least. Learned it from someone I work with that races rotaries.

If your going to cold quit your engine, don't hold the revs at 3000 for ten seconds. Hope there is the added rev will burn off any excess fuel the wind down might pull into the engine. A 10 sec burst isn't going to heat your engine up or burn off ****.

Bring the revs up to 3000 rpm.
Turn the key to off position and immediately depress the gas petal all the way down.
Let the engine wind down.
Let go of the gas petal.

Ta da.
I was skeptic but tried it once and now, for me, it never fails.
That is when I remember to do it.

 

And last one. For us out there who know how to unflood an engine ourselves, however inconvenient it may be, does anyone still put a few drops of AT tranny fluid in the plug housing for compression like the 3 gens?

Old habits die hard I guess.

 

I did is but even after cranking the engine with no fuel and no plugs there was still too much fuel trapped in the chambers. So as soon as the plugs went back in they get wet right away which puts you back at square one.

 

Yep, I feel the same way. Too nervous to move it just to the driveway so I don't wash it at home much and therefore don't clean it as good as I should. Soon I'll get into the habit of going for a quick run to Tim's and come back when she's warm. But after washing, I won't go right into the garage, it's back on the road for a bit.

 

wow so many people have this problem, ive had 2 8s and not once has this happend to me( knock on wood), but yeah renesis SE3P told me he got his car on the street, pushed it to get it rollin, put it in 1st and started it right up.

 

There's a procedure to deflood the car. Do a search. I am not sure how effective it is.
