3M protection, group rate anyone?

3M protection, group rate anyone?
I'll be getting my car in the next two weeks (March 29- April 10 2004). After getting some great advice on protecting the car for winter and regular paint chipping problems of the summer, ah those lovley summer rocks (let's face it, we're not going to drive the speed limit in the summer :D ) I'm planning to get the 3M 3M Scotchcal protection that many current owners have installed already.
I was thinking of getting a whole bunch of us to go in as a group, thus getting a "group rate". Perhaps those who need to get tinting done can join up with me as well. As for cost, well I'll be looking around these next two weeks, but if any of you have some reliable places and with really cheap costs, then of course we can all vote and go wherever.
I'm located in Richmond Hill (Major Mac and Bayview) I'll go pretty far to get things done for my car if the price is right, but let's try to keep it in the GTA at least (we all know how wonderful the car is on mileage ). Reply here in the thread OR PM me. I will do what I can for a shecdule that will fit the majority in or talk with whoever we decide to work with for a bunch of us to go at a time.
Imagine that...a bunch of RX8's driving around in one area...people probably think there's a convention or something.
Anyway, if you think it's a good idea drop a line, if not...tell me why, if there are better solutions I wouldn't mind knowing.
:D
FYI I got this from the 3M site at http://cms.3m.com/cms/US/en/2-168/ckukRFO/view.jhtml
Q. How is Scotchgard? Paint Protection Film maintained?
A. Once applied, refrain from washing the vehicle in an automated car wash for 24 hours. Washing after that time presents no problem, and no special care need be taken for the film.
Q. Can I use wax over Scotchgard? Paint Protection Film?
A. Yes. When waxing the vehicle, some wax may build up along the film edges. This can easily be removed when dry with a soft brush such as an old toothbrush. Do not use any waxes containing dyes or waxes that are not recommended for urethanes. Abrasive polishes and/or rubbing compounds are not to be used.
Q. What products does 3M recommend to best maintain Scotchgard? Paint Protection Film?
A. 3M makes a variety of products to help maintain the beauty of your vehicle. 3M? Car Wash Soap (3M Part #39000), 3M? Show Car Paste Wax (3M Part #39526) and 3M? Perfect-It Show Car Liquid Wax (3M Part #39026). The best surface cloth to use is the 3M? Perfect-IT? III Detailing Cloth (3M Part #39016) since others may scratch the surface of the film.
Q. How is Scotchgard? Paint Protection Film removed?
A. If desired, film can be removed at any time by picking up a corner of the film and pulling the film off the vehicle surface from a 30 to 90-degree angle. If the film has been present a long time, or if the film and vehicle are cold, a heat gun or hair dryer may be used to soften the adhesive, allowing easier removal. If any adhesive remains on the vehicle after removal of the film, it can be removed by using 3M? General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner (3M Part #08984 or 3M Part#08987), 3M? Woodgrain and Stripe Adhesive Remover (3M Part #08908) according to the package directions.
Q. If Scotchgard? Paint Protection Film is removed from the vehicle, can it be re-used?
A. Once the film has been applied and set, the adhesive will not stick a second time.
Q. After Scotchgard? Paint Protection Film has been removed, how do I get the adhesive off my vehicle?
A. If any adhesive remains on the vehicle after removal of the film, it can be removed by using 3M? General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner (3M Part #08984 or 3M Part #08987), according to the package directions.
Q. What if Scotchgard? Paint Protection Film is installed incorrectly?
A. Contact your Scotchgard? Paint Protection Film Professional Applicator immediately.

Hey, I was just waiting for someone to say something about this I wonder how many we'll need to get any kind of discount...
Well anyway, I'm in, managed to avoid any chips so far (knock on wood), so I'd like to take care of this soon.

I'm thinking about getting mine done as well, but was thinking about the xpel product.
www.xpel.com
While they do have kits cut for the Rx-8, there is none for the canadian model, so the headlight washer will have to be freehanded.
If you find any good sources let me know.

The headlight washers are no big deal - my installer used the Xpel kit, and the headlight washer lids just pop off, he cut out the holes for the washers, snapped the lids back on, then put two tiny pieces of the Scotchcal film on the headlight washer lids.

Just one price sample, here's what I posted in the forum last August when I had the Xpel kit installed:
Regards,
Gordon
Just picked up the RX-8 - fabulous job. Pictures wouldn't be worthwhile, since you can not see the clear film! The rear edge on the hood is back about 20", so it should provide great protection.
FWIW, here's what the installed cost came to:
RX-8 Hood, fender, mirror: $260 Cdn, ~$186 US
RX-8 bumper kit: $270 Cdn, ~$192 US
Headlights and fog lights (custom fit) $79 Cdn, ~$56 US
Total for the paint/lights 3M film protection, installed: $609 Cdn, ~$435 US.
Oh, I also had the rear side windows and rear window tinted with XG film, 35% - $119 Cdn, ~$85 US. Looks great - pictures of that would be worthwhile, so maybe in the next few days...

Tinting ..
Hi all,
Since a few people were inquring about tints, I thought I'd share my experience. Had my 8 tinted just over a week ago at Thornhill Tints in Richmond Hill.
Richard, the owner, is very straight forward and does a very good job. I was very pleased with the service and quality with no BS. Price was $200 (Includes lifetime warranty).

Hi everyone,
I need to get a head count see what we can do for prices. Just post to the thread and tell me if you want a tint or 3M job, or both.
I've been talking to a few places over the weekend and will be getting some calls back in the next two days about the group rate. I will post the prices as I get them.
If you just got to this thread, not to worry, you can still join in, the more the better.
As for those who have friends that are driving other cars than 8's, I will see if they will get a discount on them, but we will need to see.
Be back with them quotes.

I used John Allen as well (last yr) from Leakpro -- his prices are fair and he takes his time to ensure a good fit/finish. Tell him Ron Jeremy sent you (Black RX-8 in Pickering) -- he'll look after you... hope this helps...

A quick internet search yeilded this place in Kitchener.
http://www.nochip.ca/retail/catalog-...a/maz-rx-8.htm
C$1499 retail/internet/advertised. Should be able to do better. Kitchener is to hell and gone from Whitby and Richmond Hill. Would be a nice dirve on a summers day.
Will keep looking.
Cheers

Sorry for not getting back as soon as I wanted to. Here are two places that have the most competitive prices for the 3M that I have found:
SHIELDPRO
Hello Howard,
Here is the pricing for your car...
Hood/Fender/Mirror installed $240.00
Headlight/Fog Light $110.00
Bumper $260.00
Top 6" of roof $ 60.00

Prices include taxes. He is located in Oakville but will go to any place you wish for him to do your car, even to your home if you wish. He uses 3M for the body parts of the car but uses something else for the lights. The film for the lights come in different colours (blue, yellow, clear), but at the same price mentioned above.
I have spoken to John several times over the phone and have came up with a group discount of 10-20% (depending on how many of us will be doing to same body parts). He wishes for us to group up to get the work done (at least 3-4 of us at a time for the 10-20% discount). He's willing to meet us anywhere in the GTA (be it at a mall, someone's home, where ever). He only accepts cheques and cash, no credit cards.
For anyone who has got work done by them, please comment on their workmanship as this is a important factor for myself and others.
CHIP GUARD
Hood (6-8'') and Fender $250
Bumper $450
Hood (6-8") /Fender/Bumper Package$650
Side Mirrors $20-$25 (Depends how
many parts of the car you
get done.)
If you pay in cash, there's no tax. If you pay with anything else he'll give us a 20% discount but will charge us tax which works out to a 5% discount.
He's located at Yonge and Steeles. Unlike Shieldpro, he is not mobile and requires you to leave the car at his place as he works on it. You are welcome to stay and watch them work for half a day, as he told me over the phone. He only uses 3M materials, thus does not do the lights.
For anyone who has got work done by them, please comment on their workmanship as this is a important factor for myself and others.
If there are any other companies that have better pricing and workmanship please provide their name, prices and contact information. THANKS!

For those interested in Tints...I will probably not start a thread since most places I have contacted can't do much on the price, so if you have know of others who want to get their car tinted ask them to come to this thread. Thanks.
I have found a place that a couple of people of mentioned to me through word of mouth and wish to know if you have heard anything good or bad about their work.
Cybercity Auto
RX8 Tints cost $190 including taxes.
They are located behind Markham Mazda. Lifetime warranty.
I am still negotiating with them to see if they can do better. So far we are working out at 10% discount for each car we bring in of the same type, but that is not confirmed yet. They use a German product.
If you know of any other company that can has a better price and workmanship, please provide their name, prices and contact information. THANKS!

I believe that Shieldpro is the best deal in town.
Just to confirm with John, I would like to know who wants the 3M done and what parts done also, so we can get the 10-20% discount.
Please also provide a possible a location that you would prefer to group up with others to get the job done and time as well.
Parts to be done: hood/fender/bumper and side mirrors done.
Location preference: Richmond Hill on the weekends.
Thanks!:D

I asked the guy at the collision center where my 8 is getting a nose job done about this and he advises against it. He said that the newer three stage paint that we have on the 8 needs to "breathe" to release particulates over time as the paint ages. This will supposedly result in a difference between the covered paint and exposed paint over time.
He advises against "overwaxing" as it also hinders the release of particulates and polymers. Use a carnauba based wax "twice a year...pre-summer and pre-winter" is his recommendation.
Just passing on HIS opinion on these two things, I do not claim to be an expert so please do not shoot me for this post. I will pass on the covering and continue to use my Meguiars Tech Wax once a month with claybar treatments.
