Got a response back from Racing Beat on the weight of their flywheel...

"Yes, all of our flywheels include the correct counterweight for the specific engine that it will be installed on. The weights of the various hardware kits will vary slightly depending on the application, I grabbed two different hardware kits and they weighed approx 1/2 lb. Since ALL flywheels require mounting some type of mounting hardware we do not include this in our weight comparisons."

So it would seem that RB's flywheel is among the lightest available at 12.5 pounds.

Like I said in previous posts, Racing Beat and Mazdatrix have been doing this and only this for a very long time. Half of my engine is Racing Beat and or Mazda Trix and we use the Racing Beat lightweight aluminum flywheel in the race car with no issues. If wonder how well they work and how well balanced they are................look at the picture in my avatar lol

In terms of lightweight flywheels, any issues with warping due to aluminum and steel temperature differences? Anyone explored the alternative...a Lightweight Chrome-Moly Flywheel like this one from Australia? It weighs 9.5 pounds, pre-counterweight.

^ Hey Ray, I called them to confirm. The counterweight is in fact included in the weight calculation. No reveal on manufacturer side of things...

The flywheel weights that are published are different for different year cars, whether its truly accurate who knows. We are talking about street cars here, I really dont think a pound or 2 either way will make a seat of the pants difference to anyone. Like I said post after post, there are lots of better mods for the money than a light weight flywheel in my opinion, once you factor in the labor costs of doing the job. I would think the 4.77 gear would be a lot more bang for the buck!

Yep, you're right. What's a couple pounds on a piece of roating mass that spins up to 9,500 RPM's??? Worthless.

The discussion is over, I just admitted that it's a worthless mod. Carry on.

Again, on a race car running to the tenth of a second per lap its critical, on a street car its not the end of the world. For some unknown reason you seem to think I dont understand basic dymanics what I think you dont understand is I am not talking about ultimate performance of a track car with each application, I am talking about street cars I am talking about longevity and livability. You yourself said the driver has to change driving habits, I saying why bother with the expense and hope the driver can adapt to the learning curve. I am not trying to be combative just realistic for the average driver who may take his or her car to the track once or twice but drives it everyday.

^ Given that I had both your lightweight flywheel and clutch in my car previously Ray, I am looking forward to assessing the relative merits of that combo vs the 4.777, for my situation. My current clutch and flywheel are OEM weight.

I suspect from my earlier Miata tire test, that the 4.777 will make a much more substantive difference than the loss of 7 or 8 pounds to the flywheel/ clutch combo, but we shall see.

When all is said and done, I suspect that I will add back to the equation, a light flywheel, for a few reasons:
- I really miss having it
-I will be revving at a higher rate with the 4.77 and that is where the lightweight flywheel value will be maximized
-I never really had a problem with the drivabiility of ultimate lightweight combo, so going with just a lightweight flywheel won't be a problem at all as far as being a DD is concerned

Pictures of said 1/4mile times or it didn't happen

What were the times anyway?

Update: Need some mazda specific shims to install new diff, which will be ordered and installed next week. Given that the new diff will not be completed until Wed or Thurs, I am going to hold off installing it until Sat because of planned day at the track on Friday.
