Lol finally someone replied , i was beginning to think i was the only 8 in Sudbury on these forums, the roads are by far the worst ive ever seen for a city , this is INSANE , its going to destroy the 8.

Well have to meet up and go for a drive there lightning .

Checked out sudburyrides.com , will start posting on there soon as well .

Haven't checked back here in a while...

Most of the roads suck, but just go slow... I've broken 2 rims last year because of the potholes, but i wasn't taking it as easy as I should have.

Which part of Sudbury do you live?

South end, not too too far from you, about 5 - 10 mins.

There are 2 other 8's within a couple blocks from me that's why I ask.

I've only spoken to 2 other 8 owners in the area, don't think they are on the boards though.

Do you take the car out to the track at all? We usually have a large convoy go down for the CSCS events in the summer, its alot of fun. If you haven't had the your car out on the track, I highly suggest you try it.

The Sudburyrides crew are going out this Saturday to Doolys on Regent street if you wanted to come out. Just a drinking event, not really a car meet.

Hey guys, I'm a Sudburian who's spent the winter doing homework on a summer sports car-one I don't have to drive to Toronto to get serviced!

I've pretty much narrowed the search to an 04-05 RX8 and I'll probably pick it up in April if I can find the colour/options I want.

Here's a question, I'm aware of oil usage, and some tricky starts or stalls etc...now buying used I'm curious on the longevety of the power plant. is buying something with 100,00k a horrible no-no? or as long as it's got service records is that ok. it'll be my summer car so I won't be putting many km's on but don't want to be buying a new motor right after getting the car.

There are a few in autotrader I like, what would be the biggest things to look for when I go check them out?

here's to joining you for a ride in a couple of months!

Hey RENDAR , the Rx8 is a great choice ! ive loved mine from day one , of course theres the oil usage and the HEAVY fuel consumption and the flooding lol. Make sure your ready to take good care of it and you should be fine ! 100 k on the car is a little high, but everyone will have different opinions , on the bonus side you will pay less for the car , but on the negative side you dont really know what the engine is like after 100k , the Rotary is a funny engine , it really is Amazing but .... sometimes it can be a nightmare , i for one has had ( 0 ) not one problem with my engine , besides me flooding it when i first got the car , thats 600$ wasted. If i were you bud i would look for something in the 80 000km section , think 20 000 km is basically a summer of driving ... and perhaps adding a year to your ownership. Service records are ALWAYS good !!!!!! , And to top it all off MAZDA is an all around amazing company , my family loves them and ive owned a mazda 6 and pick up truck and have ALWAYS received top notch service ! anywais Good luck with the search and let us know what you decide on . Take care

Thanks a ton for the info Shadow. I'm going to adjust my search to a few lower km's and hope I can find something in the next month or so. Can the dealer here run my vin for warranty history? do they treat used Mazda owner ok or ignore us if we didn't buy new from them?

It depends how it was driven... but 100, 000 isnt bad... i bought mine at 100, 000Km...

but if you can afford to properly maintain it and let her out to play on the track you will love it. if you are cheap, or cant afford the maintenance you won't like the car.

I have 0 complaints with mine, but I knew what i was getting into before hand. and even now I still love driving it.

Get the beater. Trust me. Your car will last twice as long.

I'm in Sudbury too and store mine. I would go with the beater if you can. If you hit deep snow it will plug your front end up. Not good for those components in front lower part of your powerplant.

I'm up in Sudbury every once in awhile. Bit late in the year to be suggesting a get-together, but next spring let's try for a northern meet of some sort.

As for winter, you're definitely better off with a beater. Unless you can afford to just not drive on certain days, you'll frequently get caught in some nasty business. Probably in your own driveway, no less! :P

And as for roads, you guys should know to watch out! Sudbury has the worst roads known to man. They are punished by the winter weather, and the city's surfacing stragety is poorly engineered. (i.e. "we'll fix it later".) In my experience, you have to leave the city far behind to get to some decent driving roads.

My personal favority, so far, is Long Lake / Hwy17 west.

buy a beater... drove mine 1 winter, it was fun and suprisingly decent with a good set of tires... Started every day even when my thermomoter reading "-ER' but it was hard on the paint (needed rear quarters repainted) and hard on the car in general. Since then ive stored it.

Check out www.sudburyrides.com good info, and good people on there... plus me and rendar are the only rotor heads on there, we need some more representation.

I appreciate all your comments! ....but, i went ahead and ordered a set of 17inch Hankooks for my 8 (got a realllly good price). I have a garage to store the car if needed, but i had a chat with a few people and i decided that (since i love the car and love driving it) i will be giving it a try this winter. If the car doesnt last as long, im not going to be mad, ill just has to invest in a new one. since our summers are so short, i find its not worth having the car unless im driving all year, plus itll give me a chance to have some fun in the new sudbury parking lots hahah

Don't forget to get an oil spray (and don't skimp, get one of those fancy tar jobs if you can), if the other threads are to be believed, Sudbury salt will make you regret it.

But watch out for the deep snow, and yeah you should be alright. I'll be there on the road with you this winter, so we'll see how it goes, eh? :D

Sounds good! where are you going for your oil spray?

I think ill be alright as well.... ill basically be going from my house (in new sudbury) to Laurentian University. My major worries are snow in my driveway/first 500m down my road and the parking lot at school (its a dirt lot and ill be there for some day 10hrs and if its snowing ill be screwed to get out!) other than that im on the major arteries of the city.. lasalle and the kingsway. For backup i got a fold up shovel in the trunk haha
