Believe it or Not
Have my 8 since April 1, 2004, driven only in summer, 117,000 km. The only mechanical problem was flooding twice. Had the 7 yr. extended warranty. Then 1 month past the due date I notice misfiring all at once. Drive it 1/2 km and there is white smoke everywhere even coming up the stick shift. The dealer replaces coils, wires and plugs @ $1250.oo.I had to have an emission test and it failed. So back to the dealer. Then they tell me there is a code for the O2 sensor and catalytic converter is Kaput. They try but can't replace the sensor because it wont pry loose so want to replace the manifold also for another $800.00. They do a diagnostic test by Drive Clean and the O2 sensor is ok according to the test. So the converter needs replacing and is under warranty for another 10,000 km but since there is no code, the dealer will not replace it until the engine light comes on and then they can go to mazda and get approval.
So am on a Conditional Pass and driving but ever so annoyed that
#1 there was no indication that there was misfiring until the catastrophic event.
#2 even though the O2 sensor code came up it is now diagnosed ok.
#3 everyone knows the converter was burnt out from the flooding and misfiring event but won't replace it until the code appears.
Do you believe this can happen?

mazda can still test a cat if the light isnt on, they did it for mine. Mine was failing, but then gave it a good boot, and some how light never came back on, and when they did the test the cat passed. Confusing...
