Best place to buy oil..at the lowest cost
I'll be driving my car for week come this April 14th and realize that I should look at getting my hands on the all important 5W-20 Engine oil. I've called to three places so far and this is what I got for pricing:
Canadian Tire: $3.99/L Quaker State
Walmart: Don't carry that grade
Costco: Don't carry that grade
Please list the places you buy your oil with prices and size of bottle. This will benefit us all in the long run.
For other related information please click on the link that interests you below:
3M protection, group rate anyone?
I'm getting a group rate for the 3M film protection for the car as well as tints as well.
How to take care of my RX8?
People ask questions and provide insightful answers about the car we all love.
:D THANKS!

I couldn't find any decent 5w20 in the Edmonton area so I'm using Castrol synthetic 5w30. I figure the European RX-8's call for 5w30 so it can't hurt to use it in North America, plus its easy to find.

I've been told that synthetic is a big no no for the car, but if it works what the heck

Synthetic, not so much.
Personally, I buying my oil from the dealership.
I'll be damned if I'm going to call all over town to save my self $1 between oil changes on the 1L of oil I use (what's that, like $4 a year?)

... I know the manual and the oil cap specifically specify 5W-20, but i'm using 5W-30, is that ok? Or should I change to the 20 immediately?
At least I'll know where to look now for good prices
ooops, it looks like this was already answered...

You should do a little reading in the tech forum and other areas of this site. It has been stated by Mazda that it's ok to use synthetic in the RX-8, the manual doesn't even say not to use synthetic, only to use the proper spec oil. I could link several threads to this for you but I'm pretty lazy, a search for mineral vs synthetic should give you all the info you need to clear up your misconception about the renesis and synthetic oil.
You should definitely NOT use a synthetic oil...the rotary requires a mineral based oil that will burn in the combustion process. Synthetics tend to "gum" and can cause apex seal failure.

Again, as Jag mentioned - this has been extensively discussed on this forum for over 9 months, and the rumours about synthetic problems have been thoroughly debunked.

If you have questions about type of oil, syn or not, check out the past threads, or go further and ask mazda canada. Just make sure that you are satisfied with the answer.
