Buying a RX8 Tonight Need Advice!

I will be buying a RX8 tonight (yikes.) I haven't had a chance to test drive an AT one, but the manual one did that two nights ago (Zoom Zoom :D ). I'm planning to get the GT model with moon roof. Here be the Q's:

1) How much should I be paying for it ($ back, Accessories)? Will be going to Avante Mazda in Toronto.

2) Will be getting AT then my wife can drive the car as well. I'm a poor manual driver anyways (hehe, since I didn't drive stick for a long long time). What are the down/up sides for automatic?

3) Will be driving in Toronto Winter (yes will be getting winter tires, steel rims perhaps from Costco or GoodYear) Any hazzards or things I should be aware?

4) I heard about the flooding and the every 2000km feed it a bottle of oil mantra, is that all true and what other hick ups I should be aware?

Thanks to all who help..I know last min....I know...

I've had the AT since Aug 23 and love it. It's not as fast as the MT but it has more torque and gets better gas mileage. The moon roof infringes on the head room a bit so if you (or the wife) are taller than normal you may want to avoid it.

The bottle of oil mantra is a fact of life.

Mine flooded once due to a very weak battery (the 8 was garaged all winter and the battery ran down). There are new "hot" spark plugs that are supposed to fix the flooding problem but the main thing to be aware of is to make sure the engine has warmed up before shutting it down (i.e. don't move the car a short distance unless the engine has warmed up).

As to price: In the lower 48 states you can still find dealers that will sell for about $500 over invoice (some will go even less).

Best of luck with your purchase.

Thanks mngpao. Glad to know that I wouldn't be the only one getting the AT. Short distance runs = flooding without warm up, I'll remember that. Thanks again!

hobbes,
I went Avante Mazda of Richmond and they have a RX-8 GT 4AT as a demo. I posted this a while ago but I'll save you some Search work: I dealt with this pretty easy going guy named Arthur over there. Basically he was very cool and after I told me I was interested at the car, he just tossed me the keys and told me to bring the car back in 45mins. I highly recommend you to go there with your wife and drive the car around a little bit before anything else.

Hope this helps. Good Luck !

PS: I would suggest you to call him up before you go tonite just to book the car for test drive so that you are gurantee to be able to drive it tonite.

Thanks Smoker.

I test drove the MT from Avante, since they didn't have the AT to test (sold it before I could), but will ask again though. I'm dealing with a guy named Frank, seems like a nice kid, not to bright on the sales part of keeping the same info when pitching, but then again may work to my advantage :D . We will see what happens tonight. Thanks for the FYI!

No Probs, actually I was referring to Avante of Richmondhill and the one you are going is Avante of Toronto.

not trying to advertise for them, so check your Private Message box, I'll send you some details.

I've been driving mine all winter and have had no problems. On the winter wheel front, I doubt you'll be able to find any steelies that will fit over the big brakes. A bunch of us did a group wheel/tire buy in October from Talon Tire In Montreal. I got 17" FRD 6 wheels mounted and balanced with Toyo Garit HTs delivered to my dealer in Toronto for $1600 tax and delivery in. This was a fantastic deal compared to anything I could find in Toronto or the States.

I've had no issues with flooding or missing oil and I always start it up and drive away immediately (warming it up on the way).

As for car pricing, I'm not sure what's being offered these days. I pre-ordered a year ago so didn't have the same pricing flexibility that should exist by now.

Good luck and welcome to the club!

What a deal you got!

whosyourbaba, Holy Crap-o-la you got that much off the MSRP!? I don't think anyone here in Toronto got that discount, I could be wrong. I'm looking forward at $1000, $1500 tops...anyone know if I could do better?

Pricing is a simple function of supply/demand. There are more RX-8s allocted to Canadian delivery this year vs. the paltry 700 that were mostly pre-sold last year - and they are actually advertising the car here this year, so you may have more leverage with the dealer - I read on another thread that Ontario Mazda in the Dixie Auto Mall have 18 RX-8s on their lot now. I think that if you search this forum you will find that most Canadian buyers payed full MSRP, or very close to it. I am in sales, and generally will not pay list as a matter of principal, but like Sharky I too pre-ordered last year and paid full-pop. Worth every penny - this car is worth $60k!!! Make sure you invest in a quality set of winter rims/tires. My dealer could not locate a cheap set of steel rims that would fit over the front brake caliper...he did find me a sharp set of 17" American Alloy wheels with Bridgestone WS-50 snows for $1495.

Good luck with the purchase.

more info

If not too late -

I got about 1600 off MSRP for a GT in February 2004. Bought the 6yr 120k bumper to bumper extended warranty, though. Essentially paid sticker and had that thrown in.... (or whatever). That was in Montreal.

if not too late:

- have dealer show you the exact car, and get VIN number
- agree on mileage at delivery of car (less than 15k!)
- write down delivery date (or else it's going to get test driven by everybody and their grandmother)
- See if they can avoid sticking their damned free advertisement decal on the car (I forgot!!!! ARRRRGHHH....)
- Check tires for strange wear - you might be the ones that they are exchanging for me

Remember, their JOB is to get the best deal out of you. There's never any personal feelings, so just make your decision and feel happy with it.

Thanks for all the pointers, Avante has no stickers on their cars, wrote the max mileage and time for delivery...mind you, my RX8 was in their compound, so no real wait time...strange eh?

Well I bought my RX8 GT with moon roof in TGrey, last night from Avante Toronto. I was there from 6:30pm till 11pm $:o , nuts eh? So of course the bottom line is if I got a good deal or a great deal...

I got the car with no accessories, extended warranty (72 month @ 160,000km for $1640, wheel locks come with the car (sure, hidden in cost of car blah blah blah)) for $47,970 I think I did pretty well. Now before anyone goes what...My wife is getting the Mazda Sport 3 GT with moon roof for $29,354 with extended warranty of $1450 84 months 160, 000km no accessories, ok sales guy give cargo net. I'm trading in my old 99 VW Golf GLS so getting something from that as well, but of course didn't tell them that till the end.

So what you guys think of the deal?

They are offering me Yokomon snow tires and aluminium rims for $1600, is there something better in Toronto?

Now I'm shopping for car insurance for both myself and wife, anyone have any pointers as to who's the best shop in town (Toronto the Happiest place if you're selling auto insurance )

BTW what should I be doing to my car as I will be getting (hopefully) next week?

THANKS Again to everyone!:D

Quick math suggests you saved about $1800 off MSRP - I'd say that's pretty good for the RX-8. I would have roughed them up a little more on the Mazda3 sport. Check www.tirerack.com to see which rims you want for snows and then shop locally - they have a mock-up tool to show you how the wheels will look on the car - and it's a Titanium 8!
As for insurance, by best advice is leave Toronto:D I moved from Bloor West last year to Newmarket...my insurance rates went down almost 20%. Chieftan is not bad - I went with them because it is a month to month contract that I can exit without getting short-rated. They are very competitive on rates as well.

Hope this helps. Great luck with the car, you'll love it.

is the 1800 he saved off MRSP mostly coming from the extended warranty?

How did you do the math?

thanks

MSRP for the 8 is $39595 + $105 for paint + $1000 for roof +$925 freight +$100 air tax + $75 fuel tax + $1640 for warranty +$6516 pst&gst = $49956 total MSRP. If he paid $47970 then he actually save $1986 to be exact. Good on ya!:D

You're right to assume that most of the savings would come from the extended warranty....the dealers have huge profit margins on warranties, so they are always willing to play with price if you are including a warranty purchase.

But i bought my car from prima mazda and Daniel (salesman ) is great to work with. He sticks around with you even after you bought the car, which can't be said about many other sales people. Even if you need me to swing by and introduce you two I will . If your unsure of accessories.... my car has them all for you to look at besides the starks. Let me know. My mobile is 416-993-1135

btw .... he gave me an AWESOME price on accessories!

Thanks for the FYI on insurance...month to month sounds great to me. I'll be calling them today to find out what they can do for me.

Pete

I will be talking to you about accessories for sure. You got them all? Wow. Hehe All I have for now is somthing I picked up during X-mas. A large Oakley skull sticker..a 3D metal one that I reall would have love to replace the Mazda emblem with, but it probably get ripped off when I turn my back to the car, so on the dash it will go. :D I'm looking at aftermarket parts, but will have to save up so $ before I drop anyhting significant into the car. My brother did make a good comment about the GPS system of the car (mine you, it didn't have the street I lived on, but the surrounding ones where clearly marked, not a good sales point for the sales guy hehe. I know, they update the info, but how far do they expect people to drive in this car anyways?..oops ranting..) the comment, "could someone hook up a dvd player to the screen or the stats of the engine performance as we drive?" Answer by sales, "nope."..I don't beleive this to be totally true, but since I don't have it, not really concerned about it.

Is there anything I should be aware of when I drive my new ride from the dealership (don't go over X RPM when driving, etc. etc.)?

Thanks again to all!

congrats on the buy hobbes. Whenever you're rdy for accessories..... just let me know. About the rpms.... try and stay under 4000 rpms for the first 1000 km. Once in a while I gave it a push to 7 or 8. After 1000km .... I kicked the Sh*t out of it

Pete - Thanks for the RPM FYI, will do. Since you have all the accessories on your car, is the cargo tray worth getting? Some people have said it would take away space (like for the ol' golf bags)?

I didn't get the cargo tray .... but i did see one in another 8 and I thought it to be pointless. The truck in the 8 already has somewhat of a dip. nothing will really shift around.
