I noticed the specs say 250 hp (provisional). I like that a lot better than the provisional 247 hp!

Grimace better get his a** to a Mazda dealer and slap down a G-note to get his name on a list for an 8! I know a dealer that probably still has some space!

From my perspective, this ought to create a rush like the original '7! Of course, I'm probably way off base. But geez, its about 10G less than I was planning to spend!:D :D :D

I got a call from my Mazda guy today, there will be a Mazdaspeed Protege on the lot on Tuesday for me to take for a drive.

Right after I spin some tread off the tires, I'm plunken down a grand to reserve a Black GT RX-8

Dang thats a sweet price, :D :D

Smiling all the way to the bank.

Wow. :D $36795.
I mean, wow.
Frankly, I never thought it would actually be that low, despite crossing my fingers for about 8 months. (They've since turned black and fallen off.)
Colour me shocked.

Its strange. These past few months, I pretty much decided that I would settle on a Mazdaspeed Protege. In fact, I was going to pick one up at the end of this month. Now I'm conflicted.

The RX-8 is a screaming bargain. So is the Protege. Gas and monthly payments will cost more in the RX-8. But its RWD, well balanced, and just plain cool.

Well, 8 more days and I'll get to see one at the autoshow (it will be the red one from Detroit by the way, I saw it on the news).

Hmmmmm..... what to do.......
At least its a nice problem to have.

hey Grimmy, if you go with the Mazdaspeed Protege you might have enough cash left over to get some new fingers:D :p

if canada is only getting 700, you better decide soon or you might be left with getting an rx-8 with the automatic

Even though you get a great exchange rate, you may find that driving it across the border may not be as simple as buying it.

The gov't (both sides) have requirements, including duties and terifs.

Also, your mazda dealers in the USA will probably not honor the warantees.

So be CAREFUL

Grimace - at this price ($6k CDN above your budget if I remember right) I think you should definitely get the RX-8.

Beg/borrow/st.. I mean finance that extra cost. Skip lunches, defer a vacation, run a 'buy me *****' type of scam etc to get extra money. Think of how envious you will be of every RX-8 you see on the road driving past your new Protege - you have been more enamoured of the RX-8 than most people on this site - the passion is so obviously there. Eventually (6 months from now ) you won't be able to take it any more and you will trade in the Protege (at a $5k loss) for a new RX-8 anyway. Minimise your losses and get what you want from the start.

At least that's how my thought process goes and what I would do...

Sincerely

Pelucidor

If there is one thing I've learned during my car hunt, that no matter how limited a vehicle is, there are always ways of tracking one down. For example, only 250 2003 Mazdaspeeds are coming to Canada. I've tracked down 8 that aren't spoken for.

(My new fingers are on order.)

Interesting.. I assume were talking Protege's here, and if we are, the one that showed up at my local Mazda Dealer this weekend has NOT been spoken for.

Also there is another run of blue & black Mazdaspeed Protege's arriving later this summer, does your 250 count include these???

Yeah, I was talking Protege's.
Canada gets 250 orange MSP's (no black ones are coming to this side of the border). Of those 250, I have had no problem tracking down a handful that weren't spoken for.
Later this year (late summer/early fall) we will be getting another run of titanium grey (the same colour code as the RX-8 titanium colour, incidently) and metallic yellow (as on the 2002 Miata SE).

Out of curiousity, where is this dealership that got the unspoken-for Mazdaspeed Protege? I'm curious if it is one I know about or not.

Don't forget that there is no tax in that amount. My price for a fully loaded black with leather with GPS and moonroof is $50,000+. Still a good price but that 15% tax bites.

It was at Destination Mazda in Winnipeg. But I think it was sold to one of the tool monkeys there, before it even hit the showroom floor.

I was slated to test the car, but the dealer decided not to let it out because of the shitty frozen roads we have right now.

I did have 1st dibs on it, but because of the lack of trunk room, no sunroof, no cruise control and shitty bolstered seats, I picked NO SALE.

So its RX8 all the way, and if that sucks, (which I doubt) I am getting a WRX, which by the way I have test driven........
