This morning it was -15 out, I went and tried to start up the car. The engine sounded like it was turning over but never fired up. I stopped, tried it again, still nothing. I went inside then tried it again 5 minutes late and it fired up, but this time as soon as it fired up the revs went to 5000 RPM for about 6-10 seconds, then came back down to normal. While they were revving the engine coolant light was flashing, after the revs came back down to idle the light went off and the car seemed fine.

Anyone have any ideas?
Also, the cold just does a lot of wierd things to rotary engines (like foaming oil)

I didn't drive my car for two days, went out and fired it up in the cold (minus 10) late last night and it was sputtering a bit at first. It wouldn't rev up at first, like what happens when your coils are going south, then it went away. BTW - I have new coils so I know it isn't that.

Probably had some frozen condensation in the engine somewhere, or the engine its self was frozen.

What ever, after about 30 seconds engine was back to normal.

You'll drive your self crazy trying to figure out every nuance of these engines.....ecspecially if no warning lights are on.

Similar thing happened to me tonight...

Started the car from cold in -15 or so...
It started, revved fine... I let it warm up for about a minute (Really rushed... I know.. I know!)

I put it in gear... hit a patch of ice, (snowstorm last night... ice and snow all over the place) and the revs went up to around 4k

My CEL has been on for a few days... The dealer said its the cat... and is replacing it later this week... However, it started flashing.. and it started to sputter... although only for a couple seconds, then it went back to my normal CEL light.. and it was fine the rest of the night!

(04 6 spd, all updates, 25k)

I don't think your supposed to hold it for more than 10 secs as I understand this will burn out the starter

That's when you really want her to start since all you wanna do is get home. I was worried about my battery and another day of -10 would have finished the battery off I'm sure lol.

Where were you in BC Mike? I was in Kelowna.

For some reason whenever I start my car up in this cold -20 weather it still does the high idle thing for about 10 seconds with a blinking coolant light, then comes back down to normal and coolant light off.

Is this normal or no?

I don't think it is normal. A guess might be, is your car an american car, or a canadian car? I wonder if your coolant isn't the right kind for Calgary and is actually freezing at night?!?
