Couple of Question on Winter Tires and Rims

Just purchased a 04 Rx8 and really in a rush to get the new tires in (calgary weather, who knows just might snow in the next 20sec.)

I was wondering if anyone in Calgary know a good place for tires. Another thing, and I have a set of rims that I took off of a Acura EL (seems to fit the 5-bolt configuration unless the spacing is different in 8's) are 16" rims and I wanted to use that on my 8 for the winter tires, will this cause trouble for Engine management or anything elese? I have te 225/45R18 tires. (I think the speedometer will be affected but don't know how much)

Can someone help me on this

Thanks

16' won't fit on Canadian RX8s, 17' minimums. Plus, you gotta ensure your bolt pattern and offset are right on any other rims. So you're best to sell your Acura rims and buy proper fitting 17' rims and winter tires for the 8...and soon!

Nothing 16" will fit. Your brakes are too big.

I got 17" steel rims with Graspic tires. I think our summer tires are 225/45r18 if i'm not mistaken. I got 215's just for the 'extra' weight on the smaller footprint. I'm happy with them. Fountain Tire for approx $1300-$1400.
If you can splurge on some really good winter tires (not the crappy ones from Canadian Tire) then do it! I'm happy with the steel rims because I don't have to worry about keeping them clean and they still look somewhat decent.

PS. this is the 3rd and probably final winter for the Graspics just due to wear. I'm happy with them.

I ended up getting my winter tires and rims from the dealer. I slid in (waited too long ) and drove out nicely.
I am sure you can get em cheaper elsewhere... 17's, Toyo Garrits and nicer rims than steelies for $1500 installed. Kinda cheap for a dealer I guess, special promotion going on, half off...

Try a few tire places. Last place I went to I kind of chatted up the guy and said if I got a deal, I'd be back for new summers and for my SUV as well..

Good luck , let us know if you find something cheap.

I used to purchase my tires online at either 1010tires.com or tiretrends.com, but now I just get them from Tunerworks since they seem to know their tires and the best size/offset for performance. I hear that mytires.com (Calgary store) has got some decent prices.

I head mytires in calgary has the best deal... they are a sponsor on beyond.ca. Last year when I was shopping around I got the best quote from tunnerwork i think .. they quoted me a price just a little bit higher than online places like tiretrends.com which is good since you dont have to wait or pay shipping . .. or maybe it was speedtech.. cant remember..

I ended up buying a set of half a season old WS50 for a great price ( after camping in the beyond.ca market place for 4 months ) and threw them onto these 17s 5zigen rims I also bought for cheappppp off beyond.ca

That was after tax. Just $800 with no extra costs.

You need 17's because the front brakes are 12.75inch and won't clear otherwise. I run 17x7's in the winter with 215/50/17 Dunlop Wintersport M3's. They are a popular choice with the RX8 crowd. I have run them 2 winters and still have plently of tread. The tires are about $300 each.

Hey guys Im heading out today to buy a set of used Blizzaks (9/32 tread left) the tire size is 205 / 50 / 17, i assume this will be okay? I see alot of people running 215 / 45 / 17's. I figured a little narrower wont be too bad as they are for winter.

Let me know if these are okay?

PS: I got a great deal off of Kijiji.ca 450 for the set with steelies, used 1 winter.

Thanks
Kris

Only 9/32 left after "1 winter"....I'd look long and hard at those before I bought them.

Actually I think 9/32 isn't too bad, I thought brand new tires only had 11/32 tread?

Correct, however I believe a new tire is 10/32

Either way they are still close to new. But i want to ensure 205 is an okay width,

I just got 17x7' steelies with 215/50/17 Dunlop Wintersport M3 from Fountain Tires. They are very expensive... came out to $1800 or something. I would definitely not get them from Fountain Tires if it wasn't a company vehicle (my company use Fountain Tires). In the past, I have gotten Kumho tires from MyTires for very cheap... You can probably get a set of Kumho KW17 or KW19 with steelies for around $1000.
