The Dark Side of the 8...

consumed me last night (and ALMOST my licence as well)... I admit the irrational judgement was made by me but that feeling of controlled power from driving the 8 did help me over the edge....
I was heading to the sea to sky last night with my friend who wanted to test out the new sway bars on his WRX and we were just coming off Lion's gate when the Dark Side clouded my judgement. We were going into the big downhill sweeper into west vancouver in the right lane with me leading when this 2 gen old mustang going slowly (until he saw me in his mirriors) suddenly swerved into my lane from the left without signals and close enough that I had to brake hard. I was like WTF?! who ARE you trying to kid? you think you can outhandle an 8 in a corner with your solid axles 1980s mustang??? (The dark side speaking to me). So I downshifted to 2nd and just pulled to the left and passed him back. As we finished the sweeper and started going straight across the small iron bridge, I was slowing down back to the flow of traffic (to about 75kph at that point) when I see a West Van police car parked at the bus stop before the small bridge. As soon as I saw it, it had already started to move. I knew the 8's brakes were too good so I didn't stand on it but I gave it a bit more pressure and slowed it back down to 55. About a second later I hear a huge screech and I look in my mirror and see huge tire smoke surrounding the mustang that was following me. I passed the police and the police didn't get a chance to pull out because of traffic until we were both past him. I kept going at 55 expecting he'd pull us over any minute but he only flashed his lights to pull over the mustang after the bridge. I slowed to a stop near the gas station after the bridge just in case the officer decides to chase me down as well but traffic was coming so I turned right onto taylor way. 2 seconds after making the turn I see the red blue and white lights coming around the corner behind me so I pull over and put my hazzard lights on, turn off my car, turn on my interior lights and put my hands on the top of my wheel. At this point I was like OH S)@T.......... and the only thing I could think of was is it going to be a huge ticket or am I getting a ride on a tow truck tonight??? So after a bit after the officer runs my plates to see if it's stolen, he approaches me and says he noticed me and the other car was coming in pretty hot off the bridge and I slowed down when I saw him and almost got nailed by the other guy. He says he understands how fun these things are to drive but we still gotta be careful. He takes my licence and registration and goes back to grab the other guy in the mustang to tell him to pull over behind me. So I sat there for a bit while he talked to the other guy and finally he came back and said I'm not gonna give you a ticket or anything, and my mind was so locked on getting a ticket that I almost asked like "So how many points would I get taken off?" when I realised what he just said. He told me you just gotta be careful when there's people around you and I'm lucky that with the wrong officer (maybe some eager green officer) I could've been pegged with street racing and would've been in a world of trouble. I didn't try to argue with him or try to explain or justify or shift blame and I just confessed it was a really bad and irrational judgement on my part and I appreciate his understanding. So I take my licence and drove on to find my friend.
Now I've been thinking of trying some track days, anyone interested (and know of a place relatively close to the lower mainland?)? maybe if I get out all I could there I wouldn't be so tempted next time I see the ubquitous small dog syndrome mustang driver :p

Close call,

I must admit something to y'all, lately, I have also succumbed to the dark side, every wide open road I just fly...

the linear power of this thing is unbelievable, what a hypnotic state I am in when that rotor sings to the red line...

Wish I was so lucky ... got nabbed for the first (surely not the last) time this past weekend. The first sunny weekend since I took those Toyo winters off, who could blame me for getting after it? Got nailed for 125 in a 60.

Wow ... I just called in to see what the fine will be. Only $75!!! I had myself prepared for several hundred. Now I don't feel so bad about dropping my $795 on my CZ Stage 1. ;-)

yea I looked into that but I think they only do autocross stuff (short distance, never get out of 3rd gear or soemthing), but I wanna try like an actual track? I heard of mission raceway but have no clue where it is or if they're open to ppl just want to do laps or you need a group sign up. It'd be fun to have a group thing
and $75 bucks for DOUBLE speed limit????!!! hmm.... I guess NF's got different laws... :p
and again... yes I was extremely lucky the officer wasn't quick to judge it as street racing after I passed the other guy aggressively

They have some aerial pics of the course. Doesn't look that impressive:
