Engine Warranty ending....
Well, my extended engine warranty is up Sept. 23 so I've booked an appointment to have the compression test done.
I don't expect poor results as I haven't had any issues, but I've read on here over and over not to trust your butt-dyno...
I have the new starter and coils, plugs, wires done 2 years ago (only 16,000km ago) and I just passed e-test with flying colours.
Anyone else doing the same JUST before warranty is up?

Smart move. Other than occasional stalling, I would have never known my engine was dieing at 96,000 miles. It was driving just fine up until the day it starting stalling at idle. it still seemed to have plenty of power, etc.

Rotor 1: 6.5, 6.3, 6.7 @ 291 RPM
Rotor 2: 6.5, 6.2, 6.4 @ 293 RPM
Now I have to go through de-carb and then vacuum test and they submit to Mazda to see if it gets replaced?

haha. Sadly, I'm done with turbo's. Never had luck with them.
I'm thinking more of stripping her down and making a dedicated weekend track warrior.
I only put about 4,000km a year on it, may as well make them track km's.

I have a great Mazda dealer near me where the service folks are straight shooters. They told me that unless your compression numbers are 6.0 or lower (or equivalent at sea level and 250rpm ) Mazda will not approve an engine replacement anymore. Mazda considers anything above 6.0 kcps to still be a good engine.

But I quickly pointed out that it's for 250rpm, mine tested @ 290's. Surely once corrected to 250 I would produce well below 6.0. (I don't do math...)

My dealer said the same. They even told me they have many cases were the compression was perfect and the next couple days or week the Eight comes back with no compression. That said that sometimes it has happened while they are servicing the car, which means they have to eat the cost of the new engine. At least they are servicing their customers. I have an extended warranty. I hope mine goes before it runs out if it goes at all.

Wow, decarb didn't change numbers. still below spec.
Just sent in all my receipts.
Will they raise a stink that I store it for winters? Because there is a 9 month gap with no oil change, but only 5,000km put on it.
And I still can't believe this is happening. I thought for sure my car was fine....

I had a large gap in my RX8 mileage too, as i was driving my Mazdaspeed3 GT during the winter. I asked my Mazda dealer if it would matter (in respect to my warranty) if the oil wasn't changed for months while the car wasn't driven. He said he had no problem with that for they know the car and I only service it there and there is no real harm to the engine while it sits ,new and used cars sit on their lots for months at times.

I have been approved for replacement.
No idea when, there are currently no rebuilds available in north america.
I need to pay for consumables, which sucks because I JUST had all my fluids replaced beginning of summer and just had an oil change! ugh...

I just booked mine in too, I'm a few months away from my warranty running out, but I've had a few hard starts while hot so we'll see. What will be the total cost to you for all the "consumables" and testing?

Get the upgrade starter, it's night and day! The reman unit from Mazda was less than $300 and it spins @ around 300rpm.
Not sure on cost yet, I'll ask when I pick it up later today.
I'm going to try and convince a rebate back on the compression test. I've been reading posts and it looks like most people didn't have to pay for the compression test once it failed.
Some have got lucky and didn't have to pay a dime for the replacement! Apparently it varies per dealer.

I already have the upgraded starter thats why I'm thinking it may be time! I had forgot about going in for the test until I read this post. The butt dyno was good but seeing what happened to you I though I'd better go in. I go in monday I'll update after. If theres no engines in NA then that might work out for me I have the first week of October off.

The butt-dyno is not to be trusted!
Be sure to get the pressure numbers and the rpm.
First test they indicated mine as a pass but didn't correct to 250rpm.

Ok, just got back from the dealer and here are the results.
Rotor 2 8.2, 8.3, 7.9 @ 328rpm
rotor 1 8.4, 7.8, 8.2 @ 327rpm
it all looks good, but when you adjust for the rpm difference 4 of those readings are below spec if not 5. Like you said you have to point that out to them and even when i did they still said it was fine. I called Mazda canada to tell them of my situation and then called the service manager to explain the numbers so I could get a definitive answer. He could really give me one, so he sent the paper work to Mazda for them to decide. Fingers crossed!

Just as an FYI, the consumables you'll have to purchase are things not related to the internals/housings (plugs/ coils, etc).
Good timing for your replacements! Remember to reset the NVRAM (20 brake pedal stomp, if the dealer doesn't), follow the break-in period and make sure that fresh plugs/ coils are in

Well, I have the BHR coils. I'd recommend those, especially on a new engine. Besides, it's not like you'll have to worry about engine warranty anymore 
For plugs, order from Mazmart (a vendor of these forums). There are other places for cheaper, but I'm unsure if their shipping, and it's not much less...
