Exhaust Smell Inside The Car

Hey Guys,

Anyone else experiencing an exhaust odour from within the car when driving? I normally experience it in the first few miles of driving and it seems to fade (or I'm just growing accustomed). I also notice it when I'm driving it a little harder at higher rpms.

Is it just me?

Nope. But the only time I've been able to 'smell' an 8 is during our 8-club road trips. When traveling behind another 8, and we all accelerate, I smell something akin to a gunpowder odor (?)!

Kind of a nice smell, but strange I thought from a car exhaust!

:D

You really shouldn't be smelling exhaust fumes inside the car. If it is strong and persists you should take it to the dealer.

Are you sure it's not the stuff they put on the underside of the car (to protect it when shipping it overseas ) that is burning off?

I'm also getting an exhaust smell in the car, but primarily when the windows are down. When I park the car in the garage, I can detect the same smell coming from the engine bay. It would help me to know if your exhaust smell continues or if you had to take your car to the dealer.

It's funny but the smell hasn't returned since I posted the problem. Not sure if the problem only occurs in colder weather. If it does re-occur, I'll take it in to the dealer but for now everything seems fine. Good luck solving your exhaust issue.

The car will smell for a while when it's brand new. After a few hundred miles it should go away. It's because the car has parts coated for break in, and to protect against the salt water air.

Like Jason said. It's completely normal! But if you die of carbon monoxide poisoning, haunt him.. not me.. k

but it's completely normal in a new 8 for the first week or so,... depending on how much you drive of course.

Haunt Jason K!

well, weird smells from the car is normal during the first few hundred miles, but I don't recall having the smell inside unless the windows were open.

After doing a search for "exhaust smell" and reading the posts, I discovered that a couple of people actually took their cars to the dealer and were told that it was "cosmolene" applied at the factory to inhibit rust on the exhaust. Most people also report that the smell eventually goes away. This is all consistent with the facts, since the smell emanates primarily from the engine bay and doesn't seem to be coming directly from the exhaust. I've only got 800 miles on my 8, so I'll just wait and see what happens after another kilomile or so.

Another source of an "exaust" smell can be oil spilled on the engine during a change. With the position of the oil filter it''s not hard to spill a few drops, which then evaporate and are sucked into the air iuntake at the base of the windshield. Gives you that "mm..mm good" oily sulphur smell...for a few hours.
