First and last Truro Solo II event

Just got back from the first Solo II event I've ever been to. I just spectated this time, but might try it next time.

Anyway, this was the first one run in Truro, and was basically shut down by the cops during the third set of runs.
They "technically" weren't shutting down the event, they just decided they were going to start issuing $200 tickets to anyone who squealed their tires. Yep, who wants to try to set a fast time without making any noise from their tires?

The best part? The only complaint about noise they had came from the Truro chief of police, who wasn't even there...

So, I'm pretty sure that will be the last event ever run there...

And just to add an actual RX-8 reference (besides me driving mine there) Redshift ran his in the event. Boy do the stock tires sound sick (not in the good way) when you max them out.

Anyone bringing their RX-8 to the Solo event at AMS in Shubie on Oct 3? I plan to be there with mine.

Hey Talen. Do you happen to be the driver of the Black 8 that was there for the BMW school the other weekend?

If you mean the Solo II event (which is Oct 4th, btw), I imagine Redshift will be there with his Blue GT, and I'm planning on taking my Silver GT out for the first time (helmet shopping today).
Assuming I survive that, I'll also be at the Dartmouth Solo II the next day.

I find it odd that someone would organize an auto event, and not get all the approval needed.

Here in the Peg, all events are run on private property, and or race tracks. The location used for auto-x that is on the edge of the city is also used by police, ambulance and fire for driver training. So there are never any complaints about noise or any other bullshit.

I think the organizers of the event let you down, too bad, because it could have been good for everyone.

From what I understand, they followed all the same procedures they've followed since they started running events in 95. They were on private property (a parking lot for a mall) with permission from the owner. It was all baricaded off, and the local police had been notified well in advance of what was taking place.

From the discussions I've read, the Truro police were out of order in doing what they did. Even some RCMP officers have commented that they think the Truro police were out of line and the tickets (had any been issued) would have been thrown out.
The appearance is that the Chief of Police for Truro had his own agenda and/or reasons for having the event stopped.
The organizers have since had a meeting with the Deputy Chief of Police (since the Chief was convieniently on vacation the week after) and they are working towards a resolution that will see Solo II returning to Truro, hopefully next year, since the location/facility was great, the turnout was good, and the number of spectators was excellent.
They have also recieved support from several of the Truro aldermen, who see the whole thing as bad publicity for Truro, a town that certainly could use some good publicity.

Excellent.

We need more events to promote the racing aspect of the rotary which in turn should encourage Mazda to finally develope the 4th gen RX-7...

keep us posted on the Truro fiasco....

Jasper and Talen: Hope you both come out. It will be great to see you.
First of all, because it will be a lot of fun.
Second, because I'm sick of that 911 Cararra 4 owned by a guy who teaches at the BMW School handing me my ***. I need some competition as 2 cars in the class was getting a bit old.
It will be nice to have some equal cars to measure against.

The event at AMP is a lot of fun, and flatters the bigger cars like ours and helps keep those damn Miata's in check.

Now, all that being said, it looks like I'm going to be in North Carolina Oct. 1st-3rd, so getting back in time for the event is going to be tight. No cheap Saturday-stay tickets for me.

BTW, AMP Veteran Tip: You are out in the middle of nowhere. Bring snacks, lots of drinks, a chair, and be prepared for the weather.
Last year it was raining most of the day. Kinda sucks when you are working Turn 5 out on the back straight for 3 hours if you aren't prepared for the rain.

Yup, that was me at the BMW driving school. First time I've been on a track in any vehicle. It was a blast and I learned a lot. Money very well spent, I've already signed up again for next year.

What can I expect for the SoloII event at AMP? Is it a straight run on the track or do they put out pylons? What's the difference between this event and the SoloI event being held a couple of weeks later? Can I enter two cars? I also have a 2nd gen RX-7 turbo that I'd like to run as well. Can a passenger ride with me in the car? (It'd make a killer video

Talen,

I may have to try out the driving school next year. I'll have to get some info from you sometime on what it was like.

Redshift will be better able to answer the questions on AMP, since I'm a newbie to Solo II as well, but my understanding is that there will be cones to keep the speeds down to Solo II levels. That's the big difference between the two. Solo II is supposed to stay within speeds you would normally reach in normal driving, so not much more than 100 km/h, while Solo I is supposed to approach the limits of the car.
I don't believe you can enter two cars, since it would give you an slight advantage in that you'd have more chances to learn the track. If it were allowed, I'd have to consider bring the old MX-3 up though.
I don't think a passenger is normally allowed, although a novice is allowed to have a more experienced driver ride with him, at least in some instances. The alternative would be to mount the camera. Take a look around; I know there are some web sites that show how to properly do that for racing events.

I was going to do the school, but elected to run in the Solo2 that weekend instead.. which of course turned into the Truro fiasco... bad choice by me.

I haven't done a school of any type this year, and I regret it. I'm suffering from a serious lack of seat-time, and my event times are showing it.

A wide-open timed run around AMP would be a Solo 1.
For the Solo 2 at AMP, they set slaloms around the track, put gates well off the racing line etc.

As for running multiple cars, the short answer is no. Part of the idea behind a Solo2 is everybody gets an equal opportunity to learn a unique course (the same layout is never used twice) so running two cars gives you more looks.

Now, there have been people who have done 2 runs in each of of 2 cars (instead of 4 in one) but they were not allowed to score points for either.

If you really want to do it though, I'd clear it with the organizers first. I believe Dave Hull is the ASCC Solo Co-Ordinator this year.

25 points, actually. Just as long as I don't get 4 DNFs, I should cling to 2nd place overall.

Plus, I am the CNAC Eastern Region B-Stock Champion for 2003... you gotta love DE-FAULT DE-FAULT DE-FAULT

Which one has you listed with 25?

The ASCC has you listed with 14, and ARMS has you listed with 28.

Ah, found it. The other place they list ASCC standings.

At least they don't make it complicated....
