Front License Plate..Necessary or not?
#26
Then you got a *****, he can't give you a ticket for it, it won't hold up since it is not obstructed via in the window, as long as it can be seen. That's why in the winter I always make sure I clear the front side of my car and the window so it it can be seen.

Here we go
The problem here is that it's very subjective, so you could end up with an enforced fine (worst case)
plates, further violations
No other numbers to be exposed
13. (1) No number other than that upon the number plate furnished by the Ministry shall be exposed on any part of a motor vehicle or trailer in such a position or manner as to confuse the identity of the number plate. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 13 (1).
Number plate to be kept clean
(2) Every number plate shall be kept free from dirt and obstruction and shall be affixed so that the entire number plate, including the numbers, is plainly visible at all times, and the view of the number plate shall not be obscured or obstructed by spare tires, bumper bars, any part of the vehicle, any attachments to the vehicle or the load carried. 1994, c. 27, s. 138 (7).
Obstruction prohibited
(3) The number plates shall not be obstructed by any device that prevents the entire number plates including the numbers from being accurately photographed using a photo-radar system. 1993, c. 31, s. 2 (5).
Same
(3.0.1) The number plates shall not be obstructed by any device that prevents the entire number plates including the numbers from being accurately photographed using a red light camera system. 1998, c. 38, s. 2 (1).
Same
(3.1) The number plates shall not be obstructed by any device or material that prevents the entire number plates including the numbers from being identified by an electronic toll system. 1996, c. 1, Sched. E, s. 2 (1).
Offence
(4) Every person who contravenes subsection (2), (3), (3.0.1) or (3.1) is guilty of an offence. 1993, c. 31, s. 2 (5); 1996, c. 1, Sched. E, s. 2 (2); 1998, c. 38, s. 2 (2).

exactly...plainly visible...if you have mud all over your window and they can't see it, then yes you can be charged, same as having **** all over your plate that is mounted to your front or rear bumper. As long as the numbers are visible, with nothing in the way, you can put it anywhere on the front of your car, so long as it is readable. No where does it say it HAS to be mounted on your front bumper.

True, however the windshield itself can be an obstruction. It can cause glare, it covers the reflective surface of the plate, and it will sit at an angle as opposed to being perpendicular to the ground.
Hell I've gotten **** on for having a clear plastic cover over my rear plate.
I'm not saying they are correct, I am saying they are ******** and you need to be ready to deal with it because they have a whole bunch of reasons why every little thing could be an obstruction.

but seriously, the law is subjective like you said wulf. honestly, when i get pulled over for this (im sure its gonna happen) i will basically play dumb and say i read the law and thought this was okay, guess i was wrong, ill switch it back tomorrow officer. lol. no point in being a ***** to the cop or talking like you know the law better than them. thats what will get you a ticket. My friends dad actually got a ticket for one of those plastic covers like marc was talking about. the cover was ancient and all yellowed and nasty. the cop said he should either take it off or get a new clear one. the guy argued and the cop gave him a ticket because he argued.

I'm in Manitoba heres what I found about the licence plate issue. Even though It doesn't say I have to have a front and rear plate I'm sure I do. But It sounds like i can cut everything off the front plate except for the number and "Manitoba".
"Obstruction of number plate
4.25(1.1) No person shall drive or tow a vehicle on a highway if a number plate required to be displayed on the vehicle is obstructed in a manner that prevents or is capable of preventing any of the following information from being accurately captured by an image capturing enforcement system:
(a) the jurisdiction or authority that issued the number plate; (b) the numbers or letters that make up the vehicle's registration number. "

I asked the prosecutor when I got my ticket if it was ok to bend the edges of the plate and I was told any deformation to the plate is illegal. I'd like to try getting away with having the plate in the windshield but I don't really feel like getting pulled over again.
