Fuel consumption... again

Fuel consumption... again
I just got my 8 last week.Filled up once and got 260km on 49litres.I know its a sports car and I expected it to get less than what is listed in the manual, but 18.8l/100km? I will be patient since still in break in but I doubt it will improve by 25% or so.Should it?How much better have your's gotten after break in?BTW no out of the ordinary revving but quite a bit of warming up and idling.70/30 cty/hwy.

Consumption....
I can only tell you my figures are much better, fill light comes on at exactly 50 litres, and I usually get between 385/410kms over the last 10 fills.....but mostly highway.
The 'warming up' can be expensive, I try to drive off as soon as the idle settles down below 1000, then take it easy until warm.
Hope yours improves,
S

I've noticed a couple of things recently that effect my mileage significantly, the temperature and how long you usually drive.
Every time we get a cold snap (< 10 C) my milage gets crappy.
And I've been noticing, if I'm only driving to work and back, which is about a 6 minute drive, my mileage stinks.
So rough examples:
Driving back through Quebec, 18 C, I was getting 400km+ and only putting in about 45 L on a fillup.
The week after I got back, < 10 C, all short runs, I managed to get to 300 km at 52 L.
I just filled up the car, 50 L at 365 km, which was basically a trip to Halifax and back with a bit of city driving, at 10-12 C.

I get between 430 to 470 KMs per tank(50-52 litre fill). My Average is about 11.5 L/100 km, with generally 50city/50 highway. I have now have 3400 km on mine (built in July).
I have yet to have a pure highway run on a tank, but suspect at around 110-120 km/hr I woud see about 10.5 L/100km.

I'm in the break-in period. On my second tank of gas I got about 450K highway... but only when I drove ~3500rpm. I noticed the gas needle dropping when I went over that.
City bumper-to-bumper traffic seems really bad. I got 285km on my 3rd tank of gas.
The weather here is now cold, so it will be interesting to see how the mileage is when I finally get some winter tires on the thing.

BTW, our new G35 coupe gave us 9.1L/100km for the first tankful, unfortunately it's much less car than the RX8 by every other measure, but I couldn't put up with the MPG. We miss the RX8 already and it's only been 5 days!!!

From an ex-Rx8 owner... returned my 8 October 30th
I can tell you that my fuel consumption was awful, between 18L and 20L/100.. my last tank (with temperature between 0 and 6C) gave me a wonderful 20.4L/100... Imagine at -20!!! The car had close to 5000km. It never improved so I choose the buyback hoping that the situation get better in 2005....
Good luck, you have a great car...

I've only had the car a week and put 500km on it but already it is very noticable how the fuel consumption can change depending on the revs.
My first tank (50l) got me 350km but you could visibly see the gauge moving if the revs got above 4500 or so. My second tank looks better, approx half way through and 225km on the clock but the traffic on my commutes have made me change gear sooner since there was no point in wasting gas.
Looks like the fun driving will come at a price (18-20L/100km) but regular driving will come in around 12L/100km. My Volvo currently does 10.5 so not a big difference.
The difficult part is making yourself change up in the first place!!

It's really strange to read the mileage posted and then try to reconcile it with Mazda's claims.
My 86 RX-7 is getting better numbers.
I get about 350-400kms City and 600+kms Highway (staying under 3600 rpms so the secondaries won't kick in.) I've kept a fuel log since the day I got the car and these results have been consistent all along...
Repeated mention has been made of a "2000 mile switch" in other threads, and how it is believed that it alters the fuel map. The FSM for my RX-7 lists this switch in the console meters, but it's called the "20,000 Switch." Did the setting for this switch change for the 8, or are most people just plain forgetting the extra zero?
And have any of you seen this thread?

OK - this is only my first tank of gas ... but the car was already slightly broken in because the GM of the Mazda dealership drove it for a few weeks and put on 500KM ...
Tell me if this is alarming or not ... I got my "free fill" from the dealership, and have since put on 140km's ... I ONLY HAVE 1/4 tank left ...
I don't drive the thing hard, but it's been pretty cold here in Winnipeg (-10 this week) ...
What are my options?
I'm on a lease - if this doesn't improve, can I bring the car back for breach of contract (the brochure say 12.8L/100km and I'm barely getting 25L/100km's) ...

Heh, sorry to laugh guys. My 3rd gen averages 11-12 l/100km at 120+ km/hr. Summer only, of course. In September, returning from BC on highway 99, I got 9.5 on one tank. Slowest part of the road, but 18% grades. I was amazed! It does get 17 in the city though ;-).
The remapping that a certain "to be named in the future" tuning group is doing has improved their RX-8 to 12-14 l/100 km at full song.
