I have a GT 6-Speed RX-8 (bought in May 2004).

What kind of gas mileage do you guys get from your car? I get 6.5 km/L city driving (325 km for 50 liters), and 8.8 km/L highway driving (440 km for 50 liters). This is well below what Mazda claims on their website: (7.8 km/L city driving, and 10.86 km/L highway). These numbers are for the GT 6-speed - the automatic has different numbers.

Anyone have numbers before and after the N flash update?

Those are Transport Canada figures, Mazda is not responsible for them at all, they must quote them verbatim.

I fill at the 'light', almost exactly 50 litres, and I get 370 to 400 k per fill.

I have NEVER got 440 from a 50 L tank, and most owners would love to get that kind of mileage. If you get that much and are still not happy, please keep it to yourself - you will get cyber-savaged if you complain that you get 20+ mpg (US!) and you not happy. Some US owners get 13 mpg......

My mileage has been getting better as the car gets older. My latest mileage was 330km/50L tank. I personally would be happy if eventually I get 375-400km/50L tank (city driving)

As to the N flash, some guys have claimed increases while others claimed slight decrease. Theoretically the N flash is supposed to NOT have an effect on the Air/Fuel ratios and mileage, but again, guys have been saying that the car feels like it has better low down torque and smoother around the 6000 range (ask Rotten42).

I personally believe its that the PCM has been reset when flashed hence change in mileage because the car has to relearn driving habits. I can't explain the improved characteristics in the RPM range. Again, it's not like Mazda divulges all the secrets in their flashes, so it may well be that they did some tinkering that we don't know about.

on the M flash I was getting 18mpg in the city. Since I got the N flash I noticed on the first 3 tanks that my mileage decreased a bit....however the last tank I ran was a touch better than 18mpg. This could be one of two factors.

#1) I changed where I gas up. I used to go to Esso but this last tank I used the high test Petro-Canada fuel. I read somewhere that somebody had better results from their gas.

#2) The car could be re-learning my driving habits after the flash.

With the current tank of gas I'm on I can see already that it is better than with the M flash.



Don't even suggest that it is my drving habits that changed because I drive the same every day.....which includes getting my 9000rpm beep once a day.

I don't shift at 2000 rpm. I measured the highway consumption on a road trip (~95% of the distance was on the highway driving at a constant speed).

BlueFrenzy/StealthTL, how do you get 375-400 km's on a tank? Do you drive on the highway a lot at a constant speed? The 325 km/50L number i quoted for my car is pure city driving - no highway.

I've started to try and drive my car below 3000 rpm's - for 60km/h roads I'm usually in 5th gear, while for 70km/h roads i'm in 6th. Hopefully this will improve my city driving numbers. How does everyone else drive - pure red line?

at least u guys get past 300km...I get about 270km on 50 litres pure city driving.

Macdude ... no no .. you read my post wrong. I was saying that I would like my mileage to get to that point. I'm currently in the same range as you (~330km/50L tank all city). I usually shift at around 4000-4500 (for civilized driving)and cruise at 3000. I did an experiment for one tank where I shifted at 3000 and cruised at 2500-3000. It REALLY sucked but I improved mileage by 30km. I figure that the extra 30km is not worth it to me, so I'm back to normal driving.

I think that if you're going 60km/h in 5th that might be too low and that'll put strain on your transmission. Going 60km/h in 4th will get you slightly less than 3000rpm.

I can't speak for Stealth, but I think that some cars just have better mileage off the bat. I think that HardBody mentioned to me at the last meet that he got 400km/tank from the start. Lucky bastard!

Guys..why did you buy this car? If you are going to drive around @ 2000 - 2500rpm...then SELL YOUR CAR! THis is a performance car and unless you are one of the few unlucky people getting 12-14mpg....don't bitch and drvie your car like it is ment to be driven.


it blows me away how consistantly often people bash around the mileage thing....yet you don't have posts talking about how the car handles...how you set the car up for a long sweeping corner.....NO...its all about the mileage?!


give the mileage thing a rest and enjoy the car like it is ment to be enjoyed.

hehehe, yeaaa.. I think the reason why i barely get 300km/tank is because i normally cruise around 4000rpm and whenever i'm in a 60-80km zone I never shift past 4th gear.. I red line my car at least once or twice a day..

But, i also check my oil every other fill up and I get an oil change every 3000KM (not miles). I try to pay attention to that stuff, and the car has never had any real serious problems. . . or any problems for that matter..

One thing, I thought our tanks were 60L?? I drove it to the light once and i couldn't get more then 50L.. What happend to the 10L? (probaly a newb question

I think the light turns on with 10L left in the tank. So you can probably drive 10L worth when the light turns on until your car will stop. For my driving, I can probably get another 65 km's or city driving after the light turns on until my tank is empty - but i always fill up at the light.

Btw, rotten42: I know this is sports car. I do drive it fast when i feel like it (when I feel like smoking some dork on the street). But a lot of the times when I'm just cruising, there's no need to burn unnecessary gas. That's why I'm playing around and trying to figure the best way to drive it to conserve gas when I'm not driving it fast.

Anyone ever race an RSX Type-S? Can the RX-8 win by a mile?

I have no problem with just cruising....my problem is with all the endless threads on gas mileage compared to what makes the car so great.

I've driven for about 15 min. after the gas light went on and only put like 53 L to fill it up. So I guess I still had 7 left? Good to know!

I get scared when the light turns on and stop whatever i'm doing and go on a hunt for a sunoco.. Found one last night that was .79/litre Yes i'm at the gas station a lot, i should have my own designated pump

it was for regular but add 12cents to that so it was 91cents/litre which is good.. I actually had to fill up on a $1/litre day :P that has actually NEVER happend before.

yea, I've given up trying to save gas. I figure, if the car gets more mileage as I go along, that's just bonus. Besides, my company pays for my gas so I get it at a cheaper rate, so burn gas burn. I'm so going to get flogged by the enviromentalist for that comment! Also, if you all think about it ... a can of Cola costs $1. The same amount of gas is pennies (20 cents?). Just drink less pop. Your gut will thank you and your 8 will be faster (less of your fat *** to carry ... ha ha)

When my yellow light comes on, I know I have at least 60km (assuming crappy crappy 6km/L) left before the car stops altogether. The closest I've ever come to empty is 2.4L left (fill up was 57.6 L)! That was a scary road trip but lucky I was close to Chestermere Lake!

Heh heh ... good point Jynx. Mind you I fill up every 1.5-2 weeks, 40 cans of pop is doable for me! Well I guess if you had to pull all nighters you could do 40 cans in 2 days.

I mentioned that in a thread, that Esso gas sucks, same driving style with Esso and Petro I get about 15-20 kms more using Petro.

Sorry to revive this thread, but I started tracking my mileage again.

I've had the car for about a year now, ~23,000 KMs. "N" flash. I've reset the NVRAM and KAM. I've tried driving like a granny and driving like the devil. Doesn't make much of a difference.

I got 270 KM on the last 50 litre fill-up. That's 13.17 MPG!!

This was half city and half highway driving. So that's 17.86 litres/100 KMs. Mazda.ca says city should be 12.8 and highway should be 9.2. So half city, half highway should be about 11. So I'm getting >50% worse mileage than Mazda says I should.
