Which Gas Station To Use
I think in general, people think Chevron is the best (at least that's what I noticed out here in BC).
So why? What makes them so much better than say Shell? Shell's commercials say that Ferrari's use Shell.... Is Shell gas only meant for Ferrari and not RX-8s?
So if you don't mind... please tell me what gas station you use by voting... and please elaborate by replying why you choose to use that one?
(Sorry if I didn't include any gas stations that are not in BC... But I'm mostly concerned with BC since I live here.)

So I use Chevron because I've been scared s**tless by other people about how bad other brands of gas are... But I just don't understand... That's why I started this thread.
I really would like to use Esso or Shell because I get Aeroplan or AirMiles from them!

I use Petro Canada because I also get the 2 cents off with my MC. I would vote Shell for best quality gas. 94 octane is a waste on our cars so I don't bother with Sunoco. The less Ethanol the better.

Ethanol has less power per litre than real gasoline, and is otherwise useless.....
If you live in Manitoba or anywhere west of that, Shell has, by far, the best gas.
Shell gas has always been super-refined with hydrogen, to cut sulphur and raise octane levels, without ethanol. http://www.ec.gc.ca/cleanair-airpur/...003/app3_e.cfm this report shows that even ten years ago, Shell in western Canada (from the 'Scotford' refinery) had very clean gas.
The federal government brought in strict regulations in June this year, that force other refiners to match these low levels.

I am The One!
Well, you know what they say, if it's good enough for Ferrari...
I can see why it would be useless to use ultra94 on the RX-8 when it only requires 91 octane. However, on an FD you absolute need the highest octane available. Unfortunately Shell doesn't have an octane higher than 91.
So we're forced to use Sunoco Ultra 94.
I've seen some crazy boost levels on some cars running on Ultra 94. The fuel can withstand alot of boost! No other gas would support that type of abuse (unless of course you're racing at a track!)

Mentalhealth is overrated
I use Shell or PetroCan. I used to use Esso but my mpg would drop when I used it. I also had my debit card skimped at the Mcleod Trail Esso (just off Glenmore) a couple years back.
You also get the triple air miles when filling up with high test over the summer at Shell.

Okay, BC. Shell sounds really tempting. (Especially since I don't use 94 Octane.) Why are you guys still with Chevron? Are all of you using Chevron's 94Octane?
I know Inconsequential has a petrolium engineer friend who says Chevron and PetroCan are the best in Canada, but are there any other sources saying Chevron is superior to Shell?
One of my co-workers is close with a chemical engineer who works or worked at Esso. And he said that Shell gas is the best....
And I see StealthTL's sulphur link from gov Canada...
Any other sources?
And does BC get the same Shell gas that everyone else gets? Like, is it from the same refinery?

I use whatever's the cheapest b/t Chevron, Shell, ESSO and Petro-Can. So far Shell in my neighbourhood often has the best price and is always along the way. Airmiles too. But with Esso I have aeroplan.

I go to the Ultramar around the corner ($0.03/litre off premium on Thursdays) or Petrostar (i've only ever seen one) where the premium is usually only $0.06/litre more than regular.
Not that I'm a skinflint, or anything...

Some figures from my test (formatting sucks).
87 Octane Results from August - September 2006
Problem with the lower octane is slight hesitation on WOT fully loaded - Suggest going back to 91.
March 2006 Nov 2006
$$ Spent Km's/M L/M L/100km Mi/GalC Mi/GalUS Cost/100km Ave$/L
87 Octane $269.73 2297.2 319.419 13.90 20.31 16.92 $11.74 $0.844
91 Shell $327.62 2280.8 307.422 13.48 20.96 17.45 $14.36 $1.066
91 Sunoco $459.29 2785.1 413.022 14.83 19.05 15.86 $16.49 $1.112
91 Esso $336.98 2386.7 316.195 13.25 21.32 17.75 $14.12 $1.066
Tests were run by filling to full - 1st click on the pump - any more any I get overfill.
Fills were anywhere from 51-56L.
Usually I would run about 3-4 tanks of one brand at a time.
As I get around 300-350/fillup - you get a pretty decent sample size here to come with some statistical relevance.
My vote right now goes with ESSO as their 91 is only $0.06/l more.
This is $0.06/l cheaper than most - meaning over $3/fillup savings.
Agree with Neo - FI means 94 or better. Although I do have problems in with 94's winter mix - hot start issues. Fuel line vacuum. No such problem with Esso, or Shell V-Power.
8 though? 91 is plenty - can most likely get away with 89. No point with esso though.
Have records for over 70K with the RX, over 230K with my other car.
Hot weather and FI - 94 4sure. Although with my big 'has intercooler - the octane rating didn't make as much as a difference as the intake charge was at ambient.
Usually though 91 is fine.

Due to a friends research and info from his instructors while going for his petroleum engineering degree, Chevron, then Petrocan were recomended. Due mainly to not having harmful additives and cleaner burning If I remember right.
And this is from a guy now working for one of the biggest oil drill bit companies in the world who now lives in Dubai, so, I took him seriously.
