Gear dropping under hard acceleration?

Um, does anyone else's 8 drop from 4th to 2nd under hard acceleration? Is this supposed to happen in order to gain higher revs and therefore more power for passing or something? I'm a little confused. Maybe I'm missing something. I just got my 8 so I really am a freakin noob. I'd love to learn more about what's necessary for it's general care too.

ya, i was gonna say, but it makes sense i guess, that the computer would drop the gear if u are pushin the pedal to the floor, so pick up speed it drops the gear so u can be in a higher rpm range. Theoretically it makes sense, since thats what manual drivers do, best bet would be to pm Kris, hes got an Auto, or Leesha. Both local members on this subforum

I let my buddy take it out when I got it and he kicked down the peddle and nothing happened. I kinda felt embarrassed! LOL I was figuring on my little black beast pouncing forward like a panther...instead, I said "punch it man!" and he looked at me and said "I am, my foot's on the floor". ugh. What happened?

hmm weird, did he have it set in the shifter mode on the gear box, like wen u say nothin happened, as in car didnt move, or just steadily climbed up. Also keep in mind the 04 ATs have had a lot of issues wit their engines, its also a 4 port so less power. an 04 manual 8 can overtake an 04 at with ease. did u buy privately or at a dealership?

I bought it privately. What known issues are there? He was using the paddles in MT mode. The car moves, sounds, starts, idles quietly and smoothly all the time. I've had no problems with acceleration at all with the exception of a couple of times where the engine seems to "pulse" forward a bit. I'm still getting used to the rotary which is quite a bit different from our 96 civic si. Gotta be VERY careful in this baby. Feels like I'm doing 80 when I'm going 150!!

a lot of the engines for the 4 port AT went kaput, so just wanna be careful. You should check with local dealer see if all the major recalls have been done, a new recal came out a few weeks ago, ppl are just getting the work done now.

Yeah I saw that post. What does a dealer charge to do a recall check? Is there a recall database online that I can check via VIN #?

Yeah, autos are supposed to kick down when you floor it. Once I was in my Camry, and it had to drop from 5th to 2nd to get enough power since there were five people in the car.

non online, just walk in regarding the new oil cooler recall. They wil have ur vin on their emate software. If theres stuff that hasnt been done, it should pop up. Let them know you just got it, and your hear for the new recall along with any new ones. DO NOT let the STEALERSHIP try and charge you. Recalls are mandatory, they gotta do them.

No, downtown Toronto, but the previous owner bought it from Avante and I bought a Mazda GT Sport from them a couple of years ago.

Hi Bishop...

Yes my Auto drives like a standard. When you give it a lot of gas it will gear down... You must have floored it to get it to jump to 2nd!!

Normally when I want to have a little fun I use the manual mode and have fun with 3rd gear and always redline in 2nd. (Unless you want to do it in 3rd or 4th and loose your license & car)

BTW: the lower gears are for power and 4th above cruising... Unless your on the highway then use 4th for power... I'm no pro yet but this is how I drive my 8

Leesha, I'm in Toronto, was referred to you by projectjtaz who told me you had an AT and might be able to shed some light on the subject. I would love to come to a meet in the GTA soon, but since I travel all over the country for business, it's a tad difficult to get time to do so. Just lemme know when and where and I'll try my best to make it out. Would love to meet all of you and your 8's!

Every AT? None of my previous AT's did that! We have a Civic Si as well and it never drops gear. Is it just me, or is my 8 constantly telling me to spank it?

That's impossible...
Weren't all Civic Si's manual?

Regardless, lets say it was an auto Civic Si...

Are you saying that when you drove your Civic Si, say you are going at 100 km/h. In the auto box, you should be around 2000 - 2500 rpm. When you FLOOR the pedal, you are telling me that there is no sudden jerk with the RPM shooting up to 4000+ RPMs and then accelerate?

You mean to say that when you floor it, it just goes from that point around 2000 - 2500rpm and starts to climb up?

That's what I'm sayin'. Not all Si's are auto at all! Even the new ones have an AT now. Ours is a 1996 model. When I floor it, it gets going (eventually!) but its a steady climb, not a boost.

as Wanda Sykes would say: "Man, that's fucked up..."

Your transmission's grade logic controller must have screwed up. It is not normal for an automatic transmission to not downshift.

+1 Even my 97 Civic would down shift when I floor it merging on the highway....

And not sure how accurate it is but on wiki it says that they named the American Civic EX an Si in Canada and the Si the SiR

Bishop be careful,
I wouldn't hang around these clowns, they're nothing but trouble.
They'll steal your rims, loot your wallet, and leave you with an empty beer stranded at the side of the road in your underwear.
