Hanson Advanced Driving School, NOV 1st DDT (Mosport)
Since there is some interest in track driving on this form, I have decided to post this.
I have done a few schools and this is one of the best (in the instructors volunteer their time format), with good instructors; generally you will not hear stuff like; "the first apex in Corner 2 at Mosport should really be ignored or that heel and toe is for slowing the car down…"
The school is run by Peter Hanson, who is an accomplished professional driver and former karting star. His dad Derek, runs the classroom stuff. Derek has been involved in motorsport for most of his life and is the chief driving instructor for various driving schools across North America including Ferrari and BMW.
As a side note; Derek and Peter were the team behind DECH Mustangs a highly regarded tuning company in its day.
The school is run at the Driver Development Track at Mosport. DDT is a terrific development track with various configurations and elevation changes, there is lots of run of room as well.
This track is ideal for learning. You can safely push the limit of your car and learn how it responds (play around with trail breaking, effects of ‘lift off’, or anything else you are interested in) without the dangers of the big track.
In other words you learn allot with no fear of meeting God at corner 2 or 5 at Mosport.
Unlike Shannonville, the track is also easy on the brakes and tires and is much closer.
Time is divided between classroom, skidpad / exercises and track driving. An individual instructor will be assigned to each student for the entire day. The school run 9am-5pm and is 265CAD taxes in. Do not hesitate to contact Peter Hanson at: hanson_gtr@sympatico.ca
As a side note:
Why do a school and not just attend track days?
From my observation people who get no instruction and read no books/lectures, develop bad habbits upon which they continue to build. Skills like; Vision, smoothness, finesse mental programming do not get developed and as a result there is no platform to build upon. I usually go into a track day with something specific I would like to work on for that day.
If you are interested in developing as a driver rather then just learning “the line” it is probably a good idea to incorporate some schools be it Hanson or Bridgestone Firestone Driving academy.
For the adherents of the “Only the big track”, I have been to the big track about 10 times this year and although it is allot of fun, for developmental work, tracks like DDT and Shannoville are much better.
