Personally I think you should go with the S-03's if not the RE050A Pole Position. Expect to pay between $235-250 depending on which you pick...
Hard to find good tire guys nowadays...

Extreme Wheel is alright... they do alot of wheel upgrades... I'm talking about the actual Bridgestone/Firestone place in the little plaza just before you get to Avante Mazda.
I had Extreme Wheel price out some 17" SSR's Competition's with appropiate rubber a few years back... estimate came out to $5600!!!
I'll be keeping my stock rim for awhile.... keep it stock!!!

If you want tread life.. I believe the Michelin PS2's will do you a little better than the S-03's. Both great tires though.
My choice personally if I had to switch off my Nitto's.... Bridgestone RE01R's!

S-03s are a great tire. A little much for an RX-8 perhaps, but for cornering and braking the feel is quite good. ANY serious ultra-high performance tire is going to wear quickly - it's an effect of the tread design and compound. Toyo's T1-S were great, and had great treadlife, but the problem was that the sidewalls were a little soft if you were running a heavier car (like, say, a Z) in comparison to if you were running an Integra.
Kumho makes great looking tires that have ridiculously long treadlife, and are reasonable performance tires, and they are cheap. However, the sidewalls are notorious for flexing and therefore, at speed around a course they don't give the best feel.
However, for looks, treadlife, some performance, and being dead cheap, the Kumhos are great. But understand this: they won't be as good as a set of proper Potenzas or Pilot Sports.

Hey Mic:
How are the Toyo's working out for you? I've got to replace two of my Potenzas due to a slow leak in one of them. The dealership quoted me $800 + tax (including installation) for two Potenzas. I really don't think I want to put RE040's back on.

I would be interested to hear how you like them too.
I have the previous generation 'Proxes FZ4's" on my old car. They were crap. I was wearing a set about every 25,000km. They didn't grip too well in the dry, same for the wet. But I did get caught in a snow storm with them the first day I put them on. They handled the snow OK enough at 100% tread depth.

G-FORCES !! Is the answer ! I love my tires, I decided to buy those tires after spending one day at Shannonville race track, the STI WRX had those tires on and they didn't look damage after all the abuse of the reporters did to them...all others tires were burned !
Anyway, it's too late for Mic since he already bought his tires but for someone else that is thinking about getting some very good tires for the RX8....BF G-FORCES is the answer !
I miss spinning my tires but I know now that I have an excellent grip on the road...hahaha
