The gas tank read quarter tank left, however, upon investigation by the dealer, apparently it was bone dry, but the fuel tank had an incorrect reading. Further investigation proved that an additive in the Shell gas made this happen. Now I can't say this to be a fact, but it was enough for me to stop using Shell gas ever since.
Nope...my car is stock except for the K&N filter...
but I also do longer drives on the highway which helps my mileage :-P
i figure i use about half a tank on the highway and the other half in the city...

but my '97 civic had knocking whenever I used Shell gas...I only go there for the Airmiles. Might as well get something for my frequent trips to the pump :-P

dont idle...8's hate idling and will punish you by wasting a lot of your gas.

Hmm, I tried a full tank of Petro 94 last night.

Im feeling a big difference.

I dont have any MPG #'s yet, but just on the gas, Esso was crap.

I had been feeling hesitation for a while, hell, I was beginning to think it was a bad motor mount or something. In lower gears the engine/tranny would rock allot.

Upshifting from any gear to 1up would make the engine/tranny rock, I mean, it didint make sense.

I figured, it was either the Motor mount, or hesitation from the fact my plugs have to be changed and the air filter is due.

But now, just with the gas change, it has mostly gone away (dramaticaly).

With the air filter change and plug change, Im sure it'll be just perfect.

Im very supprised.

I'll wait and see if it comes back... but I think I found a new gas. Time to accumulate Petro points...

thats how the rotary engine is.....seeing us getting different gas mileage mostly because we have different driving style. i normally get 290-300 km per tank until the lights on. i dont even think thats too little cuz i just drive it to school where is just about 10 km away, so i have to warm up my car at least twice for only about 20kms driving distance. like REMS 31 said, idle wastes gas, yes it does;

I'm getting 200ish KMs in the city in -5 to -15C weather so far. That's running Esso 91 Octane.

The sad part is that we don't have a Sunoco for 94 octane here in town. The best we can do is Esso, Shell, Canadian Tire, PetroCan, Mr. Gas and MacEwen. I tend not to run MacEwen or Mr. Gas.

I tend to run Esso first, Canadian Tire second and everything else on an as-needed basis after that.

Suggestions are appreciated.

Isn't Sunoco 94 supposed to be worse than any 91 for mileage factors?

Acceleration could also be a factor in getting low numbers. Even if you only rev to 4K rpms but you're never in the lower gears for more than 2 seconds then that will hurt your mileage as well.

Well, I've only had the car a week, so only three tanks of gas from which to extract figures. The first tank was with Sunoco Ultra 94, and disappeared very quickly with maybe 80kms per quarter tank. The next two were with Shell's 91 octane V-Power, and a slightly more judicious use of the shifter to keep the revs down on longer cruises. I would still occasionally run it up from stops and redline once or twice per trip, but most of my commute is along a stretch of 80 km/h roadway (Highway 9), and I would run it in 5th and 6th along here to keep the tach down to 3k or so.

Driving that way, my last tank wasn't too bad and I managed 12.26 L/100km.

I have been monitoring things for about 3 weeks now. I average about 340kms per tank.

About 50/50 highway and regular roads. 1 day a week I take the car to work and I"m stuck in traffic the whole way (45km round-trip)

don't go by the gauge...that thing isn't very accurate.
My last fill up, I was between 1-2 ticks below the half way mark and when I filled up, it was only 28L (on a supposedly 60L tank).

I keep seeing people comparing mileage by how much they get before the light comes on. This is so inaccurate and can at best gives +/- comparison as it depends on the placement of the level indicator switch/float or what ever mechanism they used to send the signal. The only accurate way is to calculate km/100L and compare that or translate to a full 60L tank for comparison.
I've been tracking my 04MT religiously since I got it in Aug 06 (like an idiot) and up until this winter I've been getting the following based on 90% commute at 60HW/40City:

Summer - 11.7L/100 (best), 16.1L/100 (worst), 13.3L/100 average or 511/373/450km/(full)tk

Winter - 12.2L/100(best), 17.1L/100(worst), 14.3L/100(ave) or 493/350/420km/full tk

Not such a big difference between winter and summer but it's there for sure because of the occasional idling time I have to let it after moving for snow removal. Otherwise I never warm her up, only drive slow for first 10 mins.

Lately I'm averaging around 14.9L/100 or 403km/tk but it could be due to extra idling time on account of the !@$%#@% snow storms.

Light comes on typically at 350-360 but lately at 310-320.

Is it still inaccurate if the resulting fill is ALWAYS 50 liters, to within 2%?

See, this is a classic example of "exceptional mileage". As you stated here dude, your worst mileage in winter is 350km....my best mileage in the winter is 340km. I average between 280-300km when the tank is at the E (thats way after the light comes on). My driving style is like yours - I have about 60/40 Highway/City driving, and most peeps are getting the same numbers I am. So, I'm wondering how you are getting these exceptional numbers. Maybe you are doing more highway driving? Also, the fuel handle "clicks" around 48-50 liters for me....I dunno about having a 60 liter tank....did they change the size of the tank for certain years? I have an '05 GT/6-speed manual. Sorry, I don't mean to pick on you dude, but I'm frustrated at how these mileage numbers vary....it makes me think something is wrong with my car!

My car does extactly what the brochure said, 12 on the streets, 9 on the hwy. Maybe it depends on how your engine was broken into, oil changes and so forth. I used to drive in the low revs, no i shift at 4000 on hwy, cruise 3750, streets, i shift at 3000 to 3500, cruise 2500 to 2800. These are stupid calculations still. Get a Scangauge it'll be your idiot proof guide in figuring how you should drive your engine.

Also ChristinBen, you should be using 91 octane, recommended, unless you decide to get it retuned to use 87.

Just to make all you guys jealous: I went about 120km to work this morning, mostly highway but with stop and go. I averaged 10.8L/100km giving me a theoretical mileage of 555km on a tank.

I always use 91 octane gas. Mostly ESSO 91. I still don't understand these mileage numbers? I'm the second owner, maybe it's the way the first owner went through the "break-in" period, but would it affect the numbers this much?

I wasn't using the gauge to calculate the 12.26 L/100 km, that was done using the replaced fuel over the mileage travelled to that point. The 80kms per quarter was just a rough observation of the first tank of fuel I used and how quickly it went out the exhaust.
