I hate mondays and I have to post, GTA Dyno/Cobb Tune Day
My company was having a golf tournament over the weekends. However, instead of brown nosing the managing partners and the clients, I told them I’d rather be the ball traveling at high speed than being stationary. And hence, there goes my career, and I am happy about it. ‘Cause I got to see MazdaManic(Jeff) and his legendary Avatars finally…
Actually, there were no hot models. But Jeff brought something even better – his extensive tuning experience on the Accessport. He have already sold over 200 of them in a short period of time since June, and thanks for rx8thunder’s superior organization skills, we were able to fly him here to dyno and tune with us.
If you don’t know what Accessport is, you really should read up about it. Basically, it is a aftermarket programmable electronic module that can monitor and modify the PCM of the Rx-8. It may just sounds like every other vendors piggyback module. This is not the case. The Accessport is different than other vendors in the most important aspect - The folks at Cobb Sport literally have access to EVERY SINGLE parameters in the PCM. Thanks (well he/she got paid definitely) for an undisclosed source from the company who programmed and designed the state-of-the-art-screw-you-on-dyno PCM for the Mazda Rx-8 (the new EVO got the same company with same PCM in it now).
This was a long journey since Cobb is not specialized in rotary. They earn the reputations in tuning Subraus. Fortunately, the owner is a rotary geek and he figured the tuning opportunity for his own 2004 Rx-8 back in 2004. It did took a long time for all the tables to be cracked and another time for MazdaManic to analyze and program them for stability and performance.
Regardless, the point of the Accessport is not only about performance, but also fuel economy, real time monitoring of your car conditions, and CEL clearing. Compare to the one-size-fit-all Racing Beat reflash, Accessport offers incredible ways of updating maps. All you need to do is download it from their website / get tuned by MazdaManic if he got time…
Anyway, one thing for sure - Rx8 dyno are bad. Real bad. I have no idea how Mazda comes up with 250hp. Other than the freakish 191 STOCK motor from one of our members, most of us are in the 170 to 180 range stock. The Accessport gives you about 5hp+, but the major advantage is a much better A/F ratio at higher rpm, and a much smoother curve over the range.
Among the Rx8s, rx8thunder has the highest N/A tune with 204hp at the wheels without N2O. wvc got 230 with the laughing gas, but he was not happy about the non-juiced hp. Turborx8’s Turboed car ended up with 252hp at the wheels with tons of revs to go. Based on Jeff’s advice, this is the safe tune for now. It should be able to hit 280 when the parts are working fine.
We started the day at 9:30am, and ended up staying in the shop until 9:30pm. It’s a long day, but we had a lot of fun…and learned a lot from Jeff.
Overall, a great time for all of us. Thanks everyone for coming out, especially wcs and rx8thunder for the food and organizing the meet.

Great pics, too bad my camera battery was dead.
It was my car that had the 191 HP stock, I was a little surprised by that.
Final #'s were 193 HP & 137 ft/lbs, my setup is RB intake with duct, stock cat & MS dual exhast.
The HP gain doesn't look like much, but I did gain 8 ft/lbs across a wide RPM range, and it runs so smooth now, it's really nice.
Hopefully everybody will post their results soon.

Just before I left I asked him about the files, he said he was going to take them all with him if possible, I am going to e-mail him tonight and see if he got them.
