I wonder if next time i take my car in for a oil change if the stealership would put 5W-30 in upon my request. Im guessing not. I really wish that i had the tools and space to do the oil changes myself

5w-30 would not cool your engine as well as 5w-20. I tried the 5w-30 and my gas mileage suffered horribly.....I admit its better for your engine, but I am starting to premix now.....so I am sticking with the 5w20 and premix or maybe 5w30 and premix?

I'm willing to bet your mileage didn't suffer horribly due to changing to 5w30.

^ +1. Only because it's still under warranty. Last thing I need is Mazda comes telling me that they no longer honour my engine warranty because I went 5w30. The less excuse for them the better.

My dealership doesn't have problems like that voiding warranty, only if I switched to synthetic.

Is everyone thats still under powertrain and or bumper to bumper doing oil changes at the dealer or are you doing them at home. I was doing them every 4000 KM. But I think I might want to do every 8000 KM at dealer, and in between at home, just so the record says that I did do oil changes with them.

At the dealership. Once the warranty runs out, will change it at home. I find that having a 'relationship' with a local dealership builds trust (from them at you) and they are more willing to go to the bat for you too.

The manual specifies 8000km for the service intervals. So I take those to the dealer. In between at 4000km, I change it at my friend's.

is it true that you have to add more oil at 1500 miles because of the way it burns oil? i have heard this from a few people, but haven't asked them about it?

Im not sure about others but i have had my rx8 since 48,000 and i am now at 55,000, i think i have put 3-4 liters into it....not to sure though. I have been driving the car pretty hard and it will use more when driven to redline frequently. How much oil is everyone else going through?

The oil seals in the Renesis engine are designed to run with 5W20 oil. In our peripheral port race car we use Redline 20W50. Yes we use synthetic in a rotary, BUT we no longer use the factory oil metering system, we premix 2-stroke racing oil in the fuel. You will gain nothing by using 0W30, 5W30, 10W30 etc in a stock 13B Renesis engine, other than possible long term damage to the side and oil seals. The Renesis engine was designed to use 5W20 to help it meet fuel and emission standards, by changine that you will mess things up. You might not find any obvious difference by switching to a thicker oil, but you will effect your long term performance.

The RX-8 was designed and built in Japan. The window sticker that came on my RX-8 even says built with 99% materials from Japan. In the Japanese RX-8 manual, it says use 10w30 oil (Someone posted a scan of it on this forum). So I'm not buying the CAFE/Ford 20 weight line. I do not believe the car was designed for it, and I do not believe it is better for it.
