Importing from the US

Hi,

I can get a brand new 2006 leftover RX-8 Shinka for a huge discount off MSRP from a US dealer.

Do you know if the US version of the RX-8 is Canada-ready?

1) Bilingual air-bag labels on sun visors
2) Day-time running lights
3) Car seat theters.

I can live with a US dash.

I have already imported a Subaru from the US without a hitch so I know the process.

The US version has no DRL's and has the TPM sensors instead of the headlight washers...But other than that they're basically the same car.

But yeah they have rebates galore in the States. The CAD is high so it will be very worth it to get one if you can deal with the process of bringing it over.

I guess I would have to buy TPM modules for Winter tires also?

Would a Canadian dealer be able to make the DRL modification? I guess they would ding you pretty bad since you don't have a choice!

What was the Shinka going for here in Canada?

I imported a brand new Subaru Tribeca and I had it on the road in less than 2 weeks. The process is really not that hard.

I think the TPM's are removable cuz I read how people who use steelies with their winters interfere with the TPM and that the warning light is constantly lit up

Oh thanks. Didn't think of that option! It makes more sense that the US dealer be more helpful.

US models are not similarly equipped as the Canadian one. For one, there's no Headlight washer which I personally think is neat.
Also you will be ding with ~6% additional tax since it's not made in US. With the strong CDN currency against US, u may get good savings!

To get it on the road u need to go through RIV. Make sure you do al the paper work prior to getting it up to the border. Theres lot of steps to follow. You would need to get teh DRL put in at Canadian tire, sicne they have a deal with RIV. Dont worry about the dash. I lvoe the RX-8 because its digital, jus press the button, and you got KM. No changing of the cluster at all.

I know the process since I've already imported a Subaru. I wouldn't let CT touch a brand new car! I would most likely get it done in by the dealer in the US.

Why isn't people doing this?

It seems you can save around $10k on an RX-8 by doing this. Why isn't anyone doing this?

I know that some car manufacturers are putting pressure on US dealers NOT TO SELL to Canadians! (ie Toyota, BMW).

There is no Mazda Canada OEM bra. You have to buy a US version and have it modified.

don't you have to buy the car (ie not a lease) for you to do this?
And wouldn't you have to pay it all up front since I don't think they will finance you if you're from another country?

My main concern is the warranty. Is it transferrable from US to canada with no repercussions?

You have to pay 100% of the car for sure. You have to secure car loan first or use your line of credit. The best option is to finance the car using your home equity . Those are about 5.75% interest.

As for the warranty, call Mazda, It is transferable.

BTW no one answere about the headlight wipers. Why are they needed in Canada?

the headlight washers aren't required. The Canadian version got those instead of the TPM sensors...

Here is the e-mail I received from Mazda USA:

Thank you for contacting Mazda. I apologize for the delay in response to your contact.

Mazda vehicles for the 2007 model year have a New Vehicle Limited Warranty of 36 months or 36,000 miles – whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle is first put into service. However, Mazda has increased the Powertrain Warranty (engine and transmission) to 60 months or 60,000 miles – whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle is first put into service. By increasing the warranty on the engine and transmission, this should give customers a greater piece of mind. The New Vehicle Limited Warranty and Powertrain warranty are good in Canada, Mexico and the US, the vehicle only needs to be brought to an authorized Mazda dealership.

Please keep in mind that your warranty only covers defects in workmanship or materials, not items related to maintenance, normal wear and tear, or outside influences.

Once again, thank you for contacting Mazda.

Do not let Cdn Tire near your car!!!...All you have to do is let them do the inspection...DRL, gas cap etc.

BTW, I was told that Mazda dealerships that are close to the border in US will not sell you brand new models. Something about protecting dealerships' interest. I had the same issue when trying to import an Aud a while back from Seattle. Thankfully no such thing with Subaru.

You might want to try looking for some old 06's in Canada. I know I found 2 Shinka's, in quebec. They were looking for like 30K Cnd.
